Elden Ring

Going to return to this after not playing for months (think it was around May I stopped) so yeah, I'll have no idea what anything is or it does so will be off to the starting area to familiarise myself with the controls again.

:D

I could not get to grips with the DS games at all but this is much more accessible BUT it can still be frustrating as the game throws a lot of detail at you without much assistance in how or what everything does. Even getting to grips with working out how to set pouch quick slots was a chore. This is one game where I have spent some time watching beginner tutorials on yt which has helped considerably.

I installed this game a little over two days ago and I'm now looking at 16hrs on it. I haven't experienced a game like this in years. It's absolutely captivating.

The world they've created is a thing of beauty. Enemies are so well designed I look forward to seeing how they are going to kick my ass haha.

It's a masterpiece and I'm only lvl 30.

Working through a huge castle and essentially platform gaming rooftops is unbelievable fun

So I went back and completely cheesed commander Niall (branch of enchantment to take away his guard then cast my mimic tear after upgrading my bloodhound fang to +10) and he was down in moments.

I then pushed on to some other areas and beat the fire giant and the godskin duo and now midway through Farum Azula and after the godskin duo fight I’ve looked at the bosses ahead of me and I’m not sure I have it in me to go on and fight them…currently just over 62 hours in and I’ve had an absolute blast playing the game but from what I’ve read the bosses are exceptionally hard and uhm I just don’t think I want to put myself through that experience, maybe I’ll just return to other areas and beat up lowly enemies

There is a certain necessity in levelling up in order to fight bosses, so beating up on lower difficulty enemies is a legitimate part of the game.

There’s only one exceptionally hard boss in the game in my opinion. Before you tackle her, I’d probably aim to be at least double your current level.

There is so much other stuff to see and do, just go and enjoy yourself and level up organically.

I’m about 220 hours in and I’m still roaming around and doing stuff. I’ve only got the last boss to kill so I’m trying to complete as much of the game as I can before heading to the end game.

I chuckled at your previous post, Niall can indeed be a piece of ****:D

I think you're doing great at 62h, even a bit too quick IMO. What level are you? BuffetSlayer is right, you can go explore a bit bit before you tackle endgame to level up. Your playtime indicates you're either very quick or have missed quite a lot of content (nothing wrong with that of course, just saying).

Have you been to the Volcano Manor and other big optional areas and completed Ranni's questline (too late for that if you haven't)?

Niall after 62 hours is pretty good going I reckon. After 100 hours or so I used a guide and went back to mop up the stuff I’d missed in the early parts of the game. I still haven’t completed everything after 150 hours or so. Need to go back as I’ve not played it in a while.

I actually played the game on PC but fancied a physical copy and a fresh playthrough sitting in my couch so I bought a PS4 launch edition which will stay in wraps till I feel like giving it a go.

Not such a great idea as the game is big and I might not have the drive or time for it again but I'll just sell it worst case.

PS4 version just in case VRR is not enough when the imminent PS5 framedrops happen since you get both versions that way:p

Currently at level 122, 10+ bloodhound fang, +10 mimic tear.

I was wanting to push forward in the farum azul to get the smithing bell 5 so I can then buy all the smithing stones (which I’ve done successfully this afternoon) so now I’m thinking I grind like a m’fer and level up my other stats and do side areas.

I do have all of the map unlocked (visited volcano manor but not killed the boss here). So there is plenty still to do and farm, yes I have completed Ranni’s quest line

So I started again on PS5 after 100+h on PC. The game is still brilliantly addictive and the world/level design is truly second-to-none but...

My god, the performance is atrocious. Entire field of grass can pop in before you with terrible stuttering and fps drops. It's so jarring, especially on Torrent. It almost seems like my PS5 is broken but it plays everything else perfectly.
I heard about performance issues but wasn't prepared for anything like this. VRR does very little to alleviate this.

The only way to mitigate the problem is to use the PS4 version in BC. It's really smooth but the lack of grass and poor shadowing of what's left of it makes fields look really barren. Everything else looks good still but the grass is a very noticeable downgrade.

Such a shame, I can't believe a world of this quality and depth was created on such a shoddy, unoptimised engine. To even think what From would be capable of with proper coding and optimisation... Won't happen though, they're infamous for this sort of stuff. It'll be a year since release soon and the game still runs like poo.

I played it on release on my PS5 and didn't find it too bad, but perhaps patches have made it worse in some ways ? I understand performance on the Series X is even worse ( lower and more variable frame rate than the PS5 ). Even on PC it's not that smooth ; great game but not a technical masterpiece.

No idea, my 2070S runs it a whole lot better, 60fps with all the stuff like grass on and very little pop-in in the entirety of Limgrave except parts of Mistwood and Moonlight Altar later on where the frames drop but still with less judder ( even with no VRR because I don't have a 55" 120hz Oled connected to my PC:P).

Here it borders on unplayable, I guess I'm just really sensitive to it but I can't believe some people don't notice something so jarring. I can notice momentary drops from 60 to even 58 but they don't bother me, what's happening here is often just bonkers.

XSX has slightly lower frames but it gets by with proper VRR implementation, on PS5 it barely makes a difference.

PS4 version runs great, better than I could make my PC run in problematic areas even with lowered settings but vegetation looks significantly worse and that makes the environments flatter. Then again, there's way less pop-in because PS5 grass just fades in a couple of steps in front of the player. That doesn't happen on PC. There are moments when it runs fine but they're far and in between.

It's a shame with locations looking this good but I guess I'm stuck with the PS4 version in my bedroom.

Yeah, I don't think I'm as sensitive to frame rate changes as some. But that tolerance is waning the more I play games on my 120Hz OLED and 166Hz monitor. I really struggle with playing Switch games these days, especially action oriented ones.

I think Oled is a bit of a double-edged sword because of low latency and response time, my C2 is especially good when it comes to that, which makes drops stand out more. I tried 30fps on it and suddenly felt the urge to gouge my eyes out. VRR is unfortunately too poorly implemented to deal with drops and jittering as severe as in ER.

A shame since VRR does absolute magic in games like Spider-Man.

I purposely chose the SX version over PS5, as DF indicated outside of PS4 version via PS5 this was the best way to play it. Running in performance mode, excluding the instant pop in of assets when fast travelling between graces, I think it runs excellently in my eyes. Thoroughly enjoying it and now trying to avoid using guides / walkthroughs, accepting I may miss NPCs, questlines or special items and just experiencing it for what it is. Just arrived at the academy and currently having fun falling off of rooftops (:

The game most probably has serious problems with shader compilation and loading assets as that's where the juddering is at its worst, particularly when riding on Torrent. My 12700K can bruteforce it no problem but the PS5 can't.

Some places where I wouldn't expect 60fps run at that mostly and there are moments when it feels good but overall it feels like there's something wrong on my end because there's no way anyone would call that "smooth".

It seems fixable but who am I kidding:P

PS4 version is miles better but, sadly, looks significantly worse. The difference definitely isn't as subtle as I've been led to believe.

Yup, DF's recommendation was to play it on the Series X with one caveat - the player has a VRR capable display. Without it performance was worse than the PS5.
