As someone that has historically sucked at souls type games (very little patience) but is a huge fan of open world fantasy and enjoys grinding, will I have any chance with this? Videos look really appealing.

I've never played a Soul's game before and in fact, I've never played anything similar to this in the past either but I've picked it up and got into it with ease. Yes, it's hard and nothing seems to be explained to you but there's loads of information online. I've also found that it can be played at any pace you want so if you get bored, just play it to a pace where you don't get bored....there's plenty to see and explore. I find it hard to believe that someone will get bored of it quickly.

It’s probably the most compelling open world since BOTW. Absolutely stunning and always interesting. Massive too. Difficulty wise it’s not Dark Souls but there are things to be worked out and the game does make things easier for you if you explore or like we do use Google lol. First and foremost it’s a brilliant game and an amazing place to explore. If you’re a fan of those things as you say then you’ll love it no doubt in my mind.

Cheers gents, I wasn't so much worried about bored, more I'd get stuck on a boss I couldn't beat and rage quit

I've no problem at all googling help when required.

BOTW is one of my absolute favourite worlds. OK, convinced, will give it a whirl, will report back :D

Use your map markers. I say this as someone who doesn't use map markers but know I should due to that reason.
I still need to go back to Stormveil and try tackle that thing at the bottom.

Yeah I should but I always seem to forget. When I'm near to the end of whatever is to come I'll have a proper look at it. Luckily most of them have bonfires near so it shouldn't be too hard to work it out or I'll just look them all up. Might try and mop up the hidden achievements with a guide as well when there seems like nowhere else to go. I am nowhere near that though and I am also nowhere near bored of exploring it still.

Where abouts? You talking about the grafted scion? The thing with loads of arms? If so you can totally cheese him from the platforms above :) Its a version of the very first boss at the very start of the game and is categorised as a “field boss”. You can actually fight the very first boss from the game again in the chapel of anticipation if you unlock the correct portal at the four belfries.

Noooo I'm talking about the castle where you fight the first proper boss. You're thinking of the chapel where you start the game. Edit. No you're not, but no not that enemy.

it's a root monster thing and it's down in the depths where the deflated looking octopus face thing is

I did wonder about that area - I could see it but couldn’t figure out how to get down to it………

Haven’t combed the castle in fairness but I’ve been all around it and didn’t see anything obvious. Weird octopus face thing has me interested. Will need to revisit!! :)

I saw it by accident when I fell off a roof and died. I then figured out how to get down there and I got destroyed in one hit but that was many levels ago.

Don't know whether to get this on PS5 or PC (3080). Any thoughts?

The PS5 version has been the most stable of the two for me. I get some frame rate drops but nothing anywhere near as profound as I've seen with some PC users. And for reference. my PC is quite high end inc. RTX 3090 FE.
