Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

HI All,

Does anyone have any idea if you can hook up any in home smart display to any smart meter?

Why I ask is that I got a smart meter many years ago. However, the in home display I have doesn't actually show current use - just the day spend (which I'm not sure is event accurate). So ideally, it would be good to switch it out with something a little more useful :)

Many thanks in advance
Try downloading loop on your phone, it’s works great although prices are at svr but does give 1/2 hour readings for the last year

I have been wondering this -At start of pandemic oil was around15p ltr -my last oil delivery was around 65p nearly a year ago and now it's around 95p.
Gone up from £150 for 1k ltr to £950.
I wish years ago I had asked the Gov for some seeds for a money tree.

Yeah, we managed to bag some at 14ppl around the same time. We did actually consider picking up a couple of spare tanks and filling them but didn't think it was worth the hassle for a few hundred...or so we thought!

As far as I know they have said they will do something for oil and 'off grid' but not what. So we just have to wait and see I guess...

In short, no. The IHD has to be compatible with the smart meter type installed and the software on it in order to get it to pair.

Try here: https://ivie.co.uk/product/ivie-bud/

I moved in to a property with a smart meter (installed by BG) but no IHD.

BG won't help as I'm not their customer and my supplier (Bulb) won't assist as they didn't install the meter.... which is nice of them both!

Ivie (above) said mine is still not compatible with them as no update is shown on the SmartDCC database.
So it might be pot luck for me if it works or not. Might work for you though.

They need to provide more information on these unit charges and who will get a discount applied. I switched to a deal that is higher than the current (1 April - 30 September 2022) price cap but below what Octobers would have been (£3,549) before the Energy Price Guarantee announcement. Does that mean I will get discount on my fixed tariff or not? Seems that they are missing lots of information about this.

If no discount is applied, it would seem that only people who fixed at a deal above £2,500 would have the discount applied effectively making them much better off compared to people who saw this earlier and acted on getting a fixed deal. I could change to the SVR price cap but the difference is minimal.

Last I read they will adjust fixed tariffs to match the 2.5k cap as announced recently by gov. However that could vary by the company, I'd presume they all fall in line as its also a nice deal for these companies overall, less bad debt etc. Oil is included, otherwise that would be discriminatory as you cant help where you live and everyone is paying the same tax which is the ultimate source for how gov can take these actions.

Add in the 400 discount and it equates to +6% over your current cost pro rata

6% for a typical user.

If oil is included it would have to be as part of the discretionary fund and there's no detail how it would work. The majority are receiving assistance because the current 1 April cap was going to incease by 80ish percent for a typical user on 1 October but heating oil is near enough the same price now as it was on 1 April.

Is running an i5-3570 as a htpc going to be costly, think it's 77TDP ? Not sure whether to ditch it and get an Android TV box or a NUC.

Not sure about the calculation, 30pkwh might end up being £100 a year if it's on every day.

I run a i3-6100t 24/7 as my Home Assistant server. 35W works out at £104 per year if it was maxing out 24/7 on the new price guarantee of £0.34 unit charge; roughly £8 per month. It doesn't max out 24/7 so wont be that high for cost.

Some clever bod is going to have to whip out his calorific testing kit and decide if oil is higher or lower value then cap applied to the more conventional gas or elec kwh measure.

Ive never seen this type of system up close, how long does a oil litre last you say heating water for the day. I know people who use coal only, my old landlady bought her house for 10k (decades back) because its got zip besides the old coal miners fireplace etc. dont think they get any help but coal has a giant calorific value to it, greater then oil

If your pc is mostly idle, its like talking about leaving a bright light bulb. You can also goto a website, pc builder I forget and it'll add every component precisely; people do this for psu. Then divide by efficiency, 80% etc.

Mine with one of those wall meter plugs is about 120w browsing or citrix (work) or 520ish gaming (9900k 5ghz, 3090, 4k 120 fps etc) for reference. I’d be surprised if any normal desktop was over 100w which is indeed about an old fashioned bright lightbulb.

Liz Truss said, "For those using heating oil, living in park homes or those on heat networks, we will set up a fund so that all UK consumers can benefit from equivalent support." It depends what she meant by equivalent support.
