England Captaincy

The only real role for the England Captain is that of media scapegoat to blame when things aren't quite right on the field or to stitch up as part of a sting with a fake Arab sheikh, two cucumbers, a midget call girl and a bottle of absinthe.

For that reason there is only one man suitable for the job and it involves him coming out of retirement. Step forward Gary Neville, your country needs you.

Terry would be a good choice IMO, however the problem with England is there is much more media blub blub involved than with club football, and the FA might not like having him as a figurehead.

With Gerrard and Ferdinand both being out, the only alternative for the Wales game would be Lampard.

You do realise that the rumours are that he's getting the captaincy back permanently, not just for the Wales game?

If it was just for the games with Ferdinand and Gerrard injured, it would be easier to understand but to go from stripping him of the captaincy to giving it back to him is a big turnaround. Especially when you consider what has gone on since then too.

Rumours tonight that FC has changed his mind again and Terry will only get it back for the Wales game

Who knows whether there is any facts behind the rumour or not :)

Wouldn't surprise me to see Bobby Charlton or Tony Adams to be named as Captain only for him to appoint somebody like Gareth Barry 20 minutes into the game with this half wit in charge

why on earth would him not being first choice at Leeds before progressing with his career while Leeds declined have an influence on him being first choice at United several years/trophies after the move?

You tend to play a minimum of 2 centrebacks so I kind of lump him and Vidic together as our 'first choice' centrebacks.

Sorry, I still don't see your reasoning with regards to how Rio not being first choice at a different club 8 or so years ago combines with you not having seen enough of Smalling to say it's not unreasonable for him to be first choice.

It is however a game of opinions so fair enough.

Take no notice of Gilly, he is still under some misguided delusion that Rio was only bought as a replacement to Jonathan Woodgate (LOL) and Danny Mills was always a far better right back than Gary Neville.

Rio Ferdinand could be the best defender in the World, never put a foot wrong and lives a clean and healthy lifestyle but because he left Leeds he will always be a dirty drug taking cheat, whore of a man.

:D

Shhhhh don't let blind facts get in the way of out and out blinded hatred because he left Lids to their so called biggest rivals

Gilly Loved Ferdinand, and its only the betrayal he felt when he left leeds for United that makes him so bitter.

We were talking on MSN during Japan and Korea in 2002 when Rio Scored against Denmark I think it was, Gilly told me he wanted to have Rio's babies.

2 weeks later or something he signed for United.

Oh dear.

As for Terry being England Captain, there is no getting away from the fact that the England decline coincides almost exactly with him getting a place in the side (2004) to getting markedly worse when he was given the captancy.

He is a bad influence on the side, he is a snide, coniving, opinionated little ****.

Some people thrive on being a captain.
I remembered a PL manager once said making Terry a captain can gain 5 - 10% additional performance out of him. On a sporting front, since Rio unfit and Gerard is post op, it makes sense to let Terry to lead once again.
England wants to win games, right?

^on the flipside you could argue that that means Terry only gives 90-95% when he isn't captain, which is pretty poor.

Nope, he was bought as a backup for Woody, not a replacement.

Ahhhh so it's the jilted lover syndrome, I knew there was something behind it!

How about giving it to someone a bit younger, as much as i love Stevie (and cant stand Rio and John 'Lion heart' Terry the second of brave-ville ) these guys will be doing well to be playing for England after Euro 2012 (in some cases .. lucky to be playing IN Euro 2012), so why not pick someone a bit younger who can be nailed down captain for the foreseeable future.

At least one of our youngsters must have leadership qualities, surely ?

I'd actually base the entire team around getting younger players in now, I'd quite happily write off 2012 if I thought we were bedding in real talent.
