England Captaincy

Rooney and Wilshere are the only 2 youngsters that are pretty much guaranteed starters and I wouldn't give it either of those.

Who's the captain of the under 21's?

I'd expect the big wave of next England players will be coming through from that, so maybe keeping them together would be a good idea and just dropping a few more experienced players in to help them.

Your lot reportedly offered £10m for him a year after Leeds paid £200k for him, and only then to keep Phil Masinga happy :D

The Chief was the best man-marker I've watched play. He was also the best captain I've seen at Leeds.

Wilshere isn't a guarenteed starter in the long term, Capello seems to like him but the guy was talking about writing off 2012 and he might be gone after that - if a new manager comes in, he might pick the best players.

Some real strange goings on. You'd have to assume that it was the FA's decision to strip Terry of the captaincy to begin with (although, why would they change their mind now) and not Capello's. Even so, it's become a real mess.

Interesting quotes from Capello about Ferdinand refusing to meet him (well he says 'preferred not to meet us') when he was at OT for the Marseille game.

No doubt Taggart will be in Ferdinand's ear, encouraging him to call it a day and tbf, it's probably the best thing for Ferdinand.

I'd love for Capello to go, and everything about the England team to be 'reset'.

Then the F.A. can try and rebuild it with a better coach and new attitude. We have the players, we just need someone who can speak English properly for starters, and then develop a solid team with the players we have.

Euro 2012 is going to be the same as the World Cup. Rubbish.

I dont think Ferdinand should be the captain, largely because he's unreliable due to injury.

Regardless of your opinion of Terry being captain (personally a healthy mix of revulsion / annoyance) , this is yet another example of just how clueless and inept Cappelo has been for England. Aside from always saying one thing then doing something else, he seems to lack any basic common sense on how to treat his players and how to make decisions. He's in a constant battle with himself, both on and off the pitch, always second guessing decisions because he simply doesn't have the answers and is unable to improve the team. It's quite sad to see really but it's the FA's fault for not putting the poor guy out of his clueless misery.

Lets be frank guys we had Ashley Cole as England captain the other day, if it's come to that then it may as well be Terry.

Only thing I found strange was a year ago when Capello indicated that Terry wouldn't regain the captaincy at any time, was a bit foolish for him to close the door like that, he should have been non-commital in case the need arose in future.

There was no meeting arranged. Capello arrogantly assumed he could just "have a word" with Rio at the game. Rio heard the statements being made about a meeting and took Rooneys executive box to watch the game in leaving Capello with no one to talk to.

Regardless of anyones opinion on who should or shouldnt be captain its yet another example of total mismanagement of players by Capello. Love or hate Rio the least he deserved was to be told first and face to face.

We are talking about the guy who said Beckham is too old to play for England and then proceeded to backtrack that statement later...

Its not about players morals or player having affairs.

Its firstly about John Terry betraying a team mate and losing his respect. Once you have done that and put yourself ahead of your team mates its justifiable that such a breach of trust means you are not fit to be captain.

It could be argued for and against TBH

BUT

Having taken that stance and made the decision that it WAS serious enough for him no longer to be captain it is absolutely comical that a year later Capello can go back and effectively reverse the decision.

Terry is either fit to be captain or he isnt. If his actions werent enough for him to be stripped of the captaincy then he should never have had it taken away and if they were he should never be given it back.

The England manager arrogantly assumed that he could talk to 1 of the England players without making an appointment with him? :o

And the 2nd paragraph?

Capello tried to talk to him twice before the announcement last night. Of course the rumours were doing the rounds that he was going to give it back to Terry permanently after Capello told the press he was considering giving Terry the captaincy back for the Wales game.

The England manager more or less announced his decision to the press without telling Rio. At the same time he had Baldini say it was "only temporary".

He said he would speak to Rio at the game. Yes he does need to make an appointment with him. Why not? Why should he assume he can talk to the press and then rock up to a game to inform the current captain he was no longer in the role?

The 2nd para was just a general statement. I think the captain should be told before the media.

Its funny how every single story involving Capello is in the media before the official announcement.

If Ferdinand thinks the England manager needs to make an appointment to talk to him (not say he does, but you seem to think so) then any decision about him retiring from international football should be taken out of his hands.

I don't know what Baldini said (neither do you) to Ferdinand, if anything. All we know is that Capello told the press that he was considering giving Terry the captaincy for the Wales game. It was the wrong thing to do because it sparked all the rumours (which turned out to be true) that Terry was going to get it permenantly. Capello did attempt to talk to Ferdinand before the annoucment was made though.

I dont see why you are making an issue. other than it being because it involves a Man Utd player.

Rio was going to the game last week, why should he do anything to be available for Capello unless he is asked? He watched the game in Rooneys private box as he has every right to do.

What Baldini said has been widely reported by the press. One man was saying it was only for the Wales game, another was saying it was a permanent change.

Surely its not too much to ask that they at least get the story right?

I haven't made a big deal of anything. I'm shocked at your opinion that the England manager needs to make an appointment to talk to 1 of his players.

And going by Capello's statement yesterday, Capello must have asked to talk to Ferdinand (and he was pictured sitting just behind Capello at yesterdays game) as he claimed that Ferdinand preferred not to meet him.

And what is reported in the press can't be taken as fact.

The worst thing about this is that Rio heard from the media before Capello. I also red that Capello reportedly said that Rio was not a good captain.. IF that is true then I wouldn't want to talk to Capello eaither.

How every story involving England seems to get leaked to the media before any announcement is beyond me.
