England V India ***Clash of the Heavyweights*** Test, T20 and ODI Series

Brilliant, on Star Sports Ravi Shastri is laying into the British press (and rightly so), I am loving it :D

Nasser really trying to voice his opinion on DRS being used, now Harsha Bhogle is laying into the British Press too.

I am getting fed up of the number of pundits saying that these two teams are fighting out for the number 1 spot. Not true. India occupies that spot, England is in the number 3 spot, and actually England's trying to dislodge India. That's actually what's happening.

Fighting for it is perfectly correct, compare the phrase "fighting for their lives" - they already have lives but they are still fighting for them.

There's no excuse not to use DRS, its purely political from India and a poor showing from the ICC to back down to a single nation.

Nope. In your example, they both already have their lives. And any combination is possible - they can both keep their lives, they both can die, one can die etc

However England doesn't have the number 1 spot, only India does. England does not have the number 1 spot and wants it, India does have it, and is defending it.

You think Indian cricket fans are bad? How about the Aussies, they are easily the worst.

For starters they chant "The umpire is a ****er!".

Try the Pakistani supporters.
At Edgbaston in 2010 there were approx 100-150 pakistan supporters removed from the ground for throwing bottles at England supporters.

I hope the Indian supporters are more well behaved

-edit-
Should clarify, Edgbaston have a no glass policy, these were plastic bottles but were full with water and it still bloody hurts

I suppose you'll get violence anywhere, especially when alcohol is involved! If anything, the Indian fans are more likely to be violent towards the India team than other supporters.

I just felt sorry for the umpires, I always imagine them as being rather noble people.

As far as this match goes (and most likely the test series) I think England will probably win.

What if they're fighting for their lives against an inanimate force then? (which is what I meant and is the context that phrase is usually used in)

But what I'm trying to say is that they're not BOTH fighting for their lives, they are in fact in different situations.

Both fighting for their lives suggests that they could both easily lose their lives or both live, but there's is no possible result from this series which would mean that both teams are number one, or that neither team is number one.

You're confusing the hell out of me and I have a degree in linguistics. :p It doesn't matter that they're in different situations, either way whoever wins the series will be the number one side. Whether that means they gain or retain that position is irrelevant.

But, anyway, considering you are the only person I know that has an issue with this it's not really worth wasting our time discussing it. I'd rather watch the cricket.

I feel that the English media has been doing a great disservice to India's number one status. This has now been backed up by Ravi Shastri who is saying the same thing on Star Cricket.

Australian and SA media/players/fans have been saying the same thing for 12 months or more.
Yet its only a deal when you get to England?

Rubbish sells papers, no one takes much notice of it. Half of them have probably never seen India play on a south Asian wicket.

Did anyone else hear Henry Blofelds commentary on Broads hat-trick yesterday? I missed it but just listened to it on BBC website.

Being a massive Blowers fan it was just something else - listening to Henry when a wicket falls is just a delight. He gets so animated and it is truely amazing. You have to love it! Really makes the hair on ones neck stand up.
