English, CL & Europa League Football [12th - 18th Mar 2010] **spoilers**

Is the draw for the next round this Friday? Is it the same as usual? The quarter finals determine directly the semis (i.e winner of A plays winner of B etc.)?

Yep QF draw live on SSN at 10.45am.

CSKA beat Sevilla to go through as well...

Now just stuttgart and Barca to play for the last qf spot tonight...hopefully Barca can get past Stuttgart.

I wouldnt:)....i think Inter and Bayern will give you a run for your money...much more than AC did thats for sure.

but why? Bayern hardly dominated their group, barely got past Fiorentina (tenth in Serie A, so not quite as good as Milan up in second) and have hardly been a European force for many years now. Inter you could argue its closer but still, hardly got the best record in Europe.

On another point, Inter won last night without a single Italian in their side until the 92nd minute.

I wonder if their press and fans will hound Mourhino like Wenger was here. And also try to allay some blame onto him should the national team come up well short this summer.

Aye spread a few smatterings on tonights match with Barca to win in various ways. Hopefully will come out.

With Rio and Vidic back we've got the best defence in Europe

No you don't. They're both excellent defenders, and last year I may have agreed with you, but they both have a ways to go before they can claim that title.

and with Rooney up front we've currently got the best striker in the world

No you don't, he's currently 2nd behind Messi, and by a distance as well. Rooney is world class by Messi is on another planet to everyone else.

Careful. No Xavi or Keita.

Erm aren't you forgetting Bordeaux vs Olympiacos

Sure both need to get back to full fitness but since their return we've hardly even looked like shipping goals. I guess Liverpool/Torres will be the big challenge this weekend.

Even with our injuries I think we've got the second best defence in the league this season and I'd struggle to think of a defence in Europe better than ours when they're all fit.

Messi aint a striker, nor has he been that sensational this season. Rooney has been better this season.

Messi is still a fair bit better than Rooney as much as we want to kid ourselves

Not sure to be honest

Sure Messi's close control, running with the ball and dribbling may have the edge over Rooney but Rooney's goal scoring this season has been phenomenal especially the amount of headers he's scored

I'd probably agree that in the overall package Messi is the better player but on this season alone Rooney has had the better season

You might want to check the figures out too. Messi has been absolutely unreal this season, just as good as last season. I've watched him about 10-15 times this season (about the same as Rooney) and I appreciate Rooney is having a brilliant season, but he's not as good as Messi on current form or indeed as a player overall.

Edit -

Messi - 23 league games, 22 goals + 9 assists.

Rooney - 28 league games, 25 goals + 4 assists.

Messi is a forward, and plays up front at times, therefore he's a striker. As for sensational, is 29 goals in 36 games not enough for you?

Probably not as hes an Utd fan so is biased towards his precious Rooney:p...who is good, is having an immense season but compared to Messi?...nope wouldnt even put him close to Messi...

Ronaldo has scored 22 goals in 23 games for Madrid, that's equal to anything he did at Utd, he's just not played as much due to injuries and suspension.

Stats as is always the case doesn't prove anything if you want to rely solely on stats then Rooney's 32 goals in 38 appearances is better than Messi 29 in 36

Messi and Ronaldo are goal scorers so they'll always score goals but in terms of his all round game and performances Messi hasn't been as good this season as he was last (as has been the case for Barca as a whole), Rooney on the other hand is performing much better this season that he was last therefore IMO he's having the better season

In terms of goals only though it will be interesting which of the two gets the Golden boot this season, Rooney currently on 25, Messi currently on 22; only Suarez at Ajax is ahead of both with 26

Again in terms of his actual all round play he's hasn't shown Real the same kind of performances he did for us (well bar last season)

(L) Suarez

+ Messi has been good this season regardless of stats, every time I watch him he does something which I can't quite believe. His hat trick at the weekend was sensational, got Barca out of a hole when they were looking for a hero, in amazing fashion too.

Hang on, let's see if I get this right. You're saying that simply because Rooney is performing better this season than last, and because (in your opinion) Messi isn't performing as well as last season, that Rooney is a better player this year?! You seem to be forgetting just how far ahead of everyone else Messi actually is, Messi playing at 90% of his best is still better than anyone else on the planet, irrespective of whether people are playing better than they were last season.

Don't get me wrong, Rooney is currently playing exceptionally well, easily in the top 3 players in the world on current form, but Messi is just streets ahead of everyone, he can do things no-one else can.
