Epic Games Store now open!

That makes it sound like they will lock all those free games in your library they have given away and make you pay a monthly sub to play them. I don't think that would happen but the free games will come to an end at some point and then they may offer their own Game Pass service. I think Steam are actively looking at doing the same thing.

I'm not suggesting that they will as I have no idea. I'm responding to the other guy that seemed oblivious to all the other actual subscription gaming services that exist already. But was wearing his tinfoil hat warning us that if we accept epics free games they will get us hooked on a sub.

His logic seems to be that Epic may start charging money then Bam! Where will we all be? All those free games, we've enjoyed for free, will suddenly not be available to us without paying. Whereas before, we wouldn't have been able to play them without paying. See! How horrible of Epic to perhaps do that...

Your loss...

Absolutely, I mean the other chap getting 100 free games is fair enough. I don't play that many games these days but if there was one I was really interested in I suppose I would sign up. I just don't like having to manage all of the launchers, passwords, etc.

The other services are not the same thing - they are rolling limited access to a set of games, not gating the entire library behind a subscription. But yeah you're right I'm sure - a company giving out stuff for free can only have everyone's best interest at heart and no other motives. I'm so glad that our saviour Epic finally decided to come and save PC gaming as it was pretty much dead, better get on my knees ready to receive that sticky hot mess of games after all.

I didn't say it was horrible - and to the above I didn't say they will get you hooked - I said "enjoy the free games while you can" which I think is a fair enough statement

I don't think Epic even want to do this as part of their model. They want to be the goto place for AAA purchases. Hence they're getting AAA exclusives and giving away 100+ games to try to get people to visit their launcher regularly, where in term they'll advertise their latest exclusive. Their current sale has plenty of AAA games discounted lower than Steam's ever done before.

They might not get many of our generation to come over but imagine how many school kids have Epic games as their goto gaming site because of the freebies.

Also they have DRM free games that open without their launcher, so the idea they plan on locking you in to a subscription service is a bit laughable.

of course they are not the same , you are comparing them with something that doesn't exist(only in your head). You are hating on a company based on your assumption that they will move the free games and games you buy behind a subscription.
Who said they are a saviour? they are offering free games so that you sign up with them and possibly buy games from their store. That's what they want.
I have had a steam account for many years and I never got a free game from them.

I also welcome the competition. Steam sales are rubbish these days too.

And you can buy ubisoft games cheaper on origin and on epics store than you can on Uplay. Otherwise you would have to pay full price on Uplay.

Maybe you would like for one company to be in full control of all the prices of games on PC like microsoft and sony has with their console stores(Digital Copies)?

Okay so if "of course they are not the same" why did you bring it up when I said I though that would be the way Epic would head? You brought up an argument only to immediately 180 and say "well yeah of course my own argument isn't valid"... cool... then what was the point of the comparison to begin with?

The trained seals slapping their flippers together for another handout - "free games! I don't see any way this could ever be bad arf arf arf"

Ah they are trash then. What kind of company doesn't hand out free games? Amazing that they have any market share left

Where did I say that exactly? There's space for plenty of stores/launchers, I think I have about 8 or so and happily buy things from wherever. But I don't like being forced to buy a 3rd party title from a specific store because they threw their money around and prevented it going on the others. Maybe you would like one company to be in full control of the prices of certain IPs that you like to play? One store being the only place to buy from sound like competition to you?

I guarantee they will turn it into a subscription service... so enjoy those "free" games while you can :)

That's some tinfoil hat conspiracy you got there.

Guess you weren't a bit fan of Punisher or the other Marvel shows on Netflix? Which Disney+ pulled off of it most likely so they can put it on their own service. Great for consumers eh?

It wasn't pulled from Netflix, it's still available to watch. The shows weren't renewed for further seasons.

Epic finally decided to come and save PC gaming as it was pretty much dead

The 'ol PC gaming is dead comment, classic.

Disappointing seeing a reply only to find I'd won... ah well

He realised arguing with stupid was always a losing battle.

Ooo nice, you got me on a technicality - it was clear what I meant, fans of those shows now can't watch them there and are forced to sign up to Disney+ should they make any more seasons of them

Tell that to Tim Sweeny or have we all forgot about Epic's disain for the PC community now that they sprinkled a few freebies our way?

Sure, I mean at least you're right about the losing part

There isnt really an argument to be won or lost by either side frankly. Some people are ok with getting from Epic, some arent. Just as some people are ok with paying Sky for Football or BT Sport for Champions League football and some people arent. Its all personal choice really, we as gamers are neither right or wrong in which launcher we prefer, whether its Steam, Epic or one of any of the countless others and lets be clear here, not a single launcher company cares about the PC community, they're all here to make money from us, they simply use different methods. Which of those methods are acceptable to an individual is pretty much down to that individuals choice. I blame nobody for buying from Epic, equally I blame nobody for paying for Sky Football or indeed for Disney+ (although Disney+ isnt my cup of tea for aforementioned reasons). There may be disagreements as to launcher etiquette or ethics but it doesnt make any individual on either side of the fence right or wrong. Just choice. Certainly some of the decisions made by these companies, not just launchers but Sky, BT Sport, various news websites who require a subscription to read their articles etc and so on, could be considered unfair and that sucks, but life is unfair and unfair isnt right or wrong. Things arent as black and white as that, one persons right is another persons wrong and vice versa. To reiterate, I have no particular leaning toward any specific launcher so I am not speaking with any bias, they're all just launchers to launch the games I want to play, cant say that I particularly care what else they do much beyond that.

It's not about "right or wrong" it's about whether an actor in this industry is hurting the industry as a whole - and exclusivity as a practice is removing those choices you speak so highly of and is not helpful for any of us...

Of course every company out there is in it to make themselves money, but you can choose to do that in a way which is not giving anything back (i.e. spending tons of cash to restrict people in their choice of platform) or you can do it by striving to improve things (e.g. the CDPR guys developing GoG Galaxy, Valve making huge strides to push gaming on Linux forward or sinking tons of cash into remote streaming and VR, Microsoft pivoting Xbox to be cross platform with PC and enabling users there to play their previously exclusive titles)

Take the free games though, by all means, I don't care if people want to do that - free is free and they have given away some good games... It's just funny how it turns some into these cheerleaders for Epic and willing to turn a blind eye to their other practices. I hope I'm totally wrong and they get a chunk of market share then say "okay no more exclusivity rubbish, no more free games, and here are a bunch of features and improvements to EGS to make it as good or better than Steam" but I don't see that happening

You never know, they might do, people didnt see man landing on the moon happening, or the people of Britain voting for Brexit, or the Titanic sinking, or Leicester winning the league. You just never know :)

As I said, I really hope they do - but until they do I can only go on what they are doing and saying so far
