Essential Android Apps

Dolphin HD is my favorite browser, the only problem I have with it is the occasional annoying unclickable link problem :/

not sure what you mean adrian but:

how i use it is, load page, and its zoomed out, double tap and it zooms in and reformts (word wraps) which is perfect. if i cant click a link ill pinch to zoom (and then use the trackball if im lazy, nexus one user) i cant fault the browser really, it does everything i need and idont "miss" the iphones browser

A few pages back I asked if anyone had the HTC Wildfire Torch app. Apparently, nobody did. I just managed to locate it on a developers forum, for which I had to register to download it.

I've uploaded it here, if anybody wants it. Not essential, and there are dozens of other torch apps but this has a sexy UI. Definitely works on Desire.

The main things I'm concerned about with the browser is more the useage rather than the features. When I first got my iPhone I was always two finger zooming in and out of the page clicking on links, now I just double tap to zoom to a given column or section and can 99 times out of 100 hit the right link just because the screen is so accurate. The browser I was using when doubletapping reformatted the page content (which was just whack), and wasn't as accurate with zoomed out taps. Does the standard browser behave in this way?

I feel like I'm trying to come up with excuses and should just bloody buy one already (Desire)- I'm not paying for an iPhone 4 regardless and they have blocked us 3G users off from any new apps as OS4 brings an already slow phone to it's knees. Plus after the handling of the Antenna thing I don't really want to give them anymore of my money!

Hi mate, I just did the same thing (iPhone for 3+ years to a desire) and I know what you mean.

Here's a few observations on web browsing.

Safari:
+ Double tapping is just perfection and I miss it!
+ Browsing is a tad smoother.
- Very small screen (esp with those perminant top/bottom bars)

Desire/android browser (chrome?):
+ Having a physical back button is amazing and very natural (now when using the iPhone I always try and press it :o)
+ Ditto settings/search button.
+ Yum yum, full screen butter!
+ Scrolling is fast! (no clicking the top bar anymore!)
-+ Text reformating is good most the time but would like an option to turn it off. (can you?)
- Double tapping is good on text but rubbish on images.

Both give you a great browsing experience tbh, you'll loose double tapping but gain a back button

Oh yeah the keyboard, after a few days you won't notice any differences... ( I think there is a simpler/fatter button iPhone clone keyboard on the market?)

Considering the desire came free on a ?15pm smartphone contract I'm very happy about missing out on the iPhone 4. Thanks htc/google you just saved me ?500+! ;)

(My only grievance with the desire is the lack of anti-glare on the screen, hopefully a Brando screen protector should sort that out.)

Question regarding the official Twitter app...

In Retweets > Retweeted where it shows your tweets that others have retweeted using Twitter's method, it doesn't show you who retweeted it or how many people.

On the web version of Twitter, I never even see that I've been retweeted at all.

anyone else having trouble with the data switch on switch pro or extended controls?

i've tried both on my wildfire and they work for a while, until it seems the phone sleeps. then i cannot enable the data network at all and have to uninstall the app and then re-boot the phone.

I have a bit of a noob question (I dare say I'm missing some fundamental widget/app understanding here)..

By default (android 2.1, unbranded desire) the htc clock widget has nice little animations to accompany the weather report.
I'm wondering, is there a smaller (in icon size/screen space) weather widget that will give me the same/similar animations?. I'd like to have that next to a much smaller clock ye see, and I'm all confuzzled :(.

Edit; also, does anyone know of a bightness control widget for 2.1/sense?. I must have installed and uninstalled 10 widgets with no joy :(. I also need to find power saving widgets, wifi/gps/bluetooth Alas I cannot find anything that definately wokd with sense/2.1.

The standard clock one im presuming that takes up a few lines of widget space, with the big flat clock numbers, I like that, havent seen anything smaller.

Have you seen the power control widget that is standard? That covers wifi/gps/bluetooth/brightness.
