European Grand Prix 2011, Valencia Street Circuit - Race 8/19

I'd love to be a part of these FIA Tea and Crumpet sessions where they all cackle and roar with laugher at the outrage that will ensue across the internet when they plot to give one driver more penalties than another, change some rules or otherwise act in an evil and despicable way.

I would much prefer that the rules stay the same for a full season. However at the end of the day every team knows that rules can, have, and will change at the whim of the FIA for whatever reason they dream/conjure up. It might not seem fair, and it may well seem like they are doing it only to spite one team at any given time, but the rules are the rules and everyone knows they CAN change if the FIA want to.

The teams are more than welcome to take their ball home if they don't want to play any more but they all keep coming back despite the evil empire doing its dastardly best to keep them down.

We still don't know what affect this is going to have. Even after Q3 we still aren't going to know as its just one race. If in 5 races time Vettel hasn't been on pole again then for sure the internet warriors will be up in arms that "their" F1 is a fraud being manufactured by the system. I doubt thats going to happen though and look forward to the FIA being called inept in a few weeks time if Vettel continues to score large points after the FIA apparently tried and failed to take him down.

If they make a change which people THINK will harm the fast team and it does they are conspiring.
If they make a change which people THINK will harm the fast team and it doesn't they are stupid.
Gotta love those options.

Well put, sir.

Spain would love a racer who was clever and black ;)

Yeah I can see that going down like afart ina aspace suit lol.

McLaren FloViz on the rear wing. Apparently the mechanics were none to pleased when they realised a TV camera was there just as they were taking the pics lol

Not Euro GP related but about Team Lotus long term

someone from f1technical.net said:
GE logos will start appearing from Silverstone.

GE are also providing Team Lotus with €20m minimum of technical support each year as well, so most of this will be at the factory in the form of rapid prototyping and advanced tooling needs. They are giving Team Lotus around €10m for the remainder of this year, with €30m from the start of next year, for the next 5 seasons.

There is 2 more sponsors rumored to come on board, the first one is 85% certain in Blackberry providing the team €15m cash and €8m technical support a season for 5 years for the rear wing and a few more areas on the car.

The second sponsorship is rumored to be the same as what Mercedes have with Petronas, but from Angolan oil company Sonagol, this will probably be €35m a year over 3 years with them providing Team Lotus their fuel as well.

This would put Team Lotus right bang in the top 6 teams budgetary wise with a budget of around €200m a year from current and future sponsors. Only McLaren, Ferrari, red Bull, Renault and Mercedes would have more money available.

Thats a big deal for Lotus if it does all pan out.

Well yes we said that because we didn't know the rules would change did we. It hard to predict who will win if they keep taking away what makes a certain car fast when it suits.

Anyone can make a title close if you do that, if they had banned the Brawn Diffuser after 7 races the car would have been in the midfield. Now wouldn't that have been fun. Or banned williams endless gadgets in 92 after 4 races and watched someone else win the title.

I'm sick of seeing Nadal win all the time, how about every time he goes 2 sets up he's not allowed to use his backhand anymore until it's all square.

Who wants to win a title by default because they ban every thing your rival has come up with that was legal when they built the car. Lewis looked smug and couldn't help smiling like a chesire cat talking about Red Bull now having lost their advantage. Great way to win the title Mclaren.

It's made me into a Vettel fan. I hope he wipes the floor with them on pace unlike fans of other drivers who hope Vettel DNFs.

i think most of us want a championship worth watchng rather than just rbr to fail. its a bit crap if vettel wins every race and gets every pole, hows that exciting to watch?

we want to see 4 or 5 drivers battling for the title not 1 then 4 battling for nothing.

who wants to see a championship wrapped up half way through a season?

Apparently the McLaren is running a steeper rear wing than others and a revised DRS but are still getting good top speed. Apparently allowing them more downforce to look after the rear tyres for the race.

Understood, if we were looking at a Mansell 92 situation but so far despite all that the races really have been pretty good. The qually pace hasn't ever really been replicated in race pace and so far I think we have had some exciting races. Better than in seasons where one man hasn't got pole 6 or 7 times.

I would agree totally if the races where dull people would switch off, but so far there hasn't really been anything that hasn't been like a Bahrain gp :D

Tbh I don't have anything against Vettel he seems a pretty likeable chap (unlike the other German when he was winning everything :p) but I'd like to see him have to work for a win a couple of times, seems like almost every win he's ever had he's started on pole and just drove off time trialling for 70 laps.

McLaren ending FP3 1 and 1.4 seconds down on Vettel. Ferrari sliding home in 2nd and 3rd, also according to Anthony Davidson Ferrari were the ones pushing hardest for the rule change. I didn't catch if he was referring to the engine map change or the off throttle blow diffuser. Looking at how much work they have done on the latter I assume he was referring to the Engine Map change.

Perhaps because there's an explicit exception in the rules for engine maps, so I and others agree that it's retarded halfway through the season. Like f-duct and DD should have been left till the end of the season and banned in 2012.

AH hits the nail on the head, why should there EVER be any restriction on how you set your engine up... Say at the end of qualifying they discover a major fault with the map, they have no option to change it now. Maps were open for just this reason, and having an engine that you can set more aggressively has been available forever. Look at the old classic race cars where you adjusted the advance/retard on the steering wheel :)

But what if the rules don't cover the new development? A brand new part that nobody has ever seen before?

Then if it is within the rules they will allow it or disqualify it if they think it is a breach. These little things are what usually appears at the start of a season giving one team dominance until the others catch up or the item is banned.
