European Grand Prix 2011, Valencia Street Circuit - Race 8/19

About half the time, over the course of the World Championship era. It only happened once in the '70s, oddly.

I think and you might be able to tell me it's happened a lot more often since the 90's, that the driver who won the race has gone on to secure the title, I if I wasn't supposed to be getting ready for work I'd run the numbers.

It's only on something I remember them saying in commentary a few years ago. :)

Eight times in the '90s ;)

Also eight times since!

***edit***

Actually, that one nearly caught me out. Had to go and check for 2005, and sure enough - Fisi won the opening round, not Alonso!

Race - Vettel wins from Alonso in Valencia
Sebastian Vettel scored his sixth victory of the season in Valencia on Sunday, without anyone getting anywhere close to his Red Bull.

Formula 1 highlights - European Grand Prix
Sebastian Vettel controls the race from start to finish to win the European Grand Prix in Valencia, ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber.

Cheers for that :)

Yeah I remember the fisi win and how unpopular he suddenly became, the same with trulli when he won and wasn't under management by Flav :D

Can a clever statistician work something out for me:

How many races this season has either of the McLaren's lost a place(s) at the start?

It seems to me (but maybe I'm wrong) that both Lewis and Jenson have been pretty poor at getting off the line this season which has made their life harder than it needed to be.

I know Hamilton said even if he had kept Alonso behind him at the first corner of Valencia he wouldn't have been able to hold him off for the whole race but surely there is something wrong with either the driver(s) or the car if they have consistently **** starts.

The FIA website has saved me here, because in all honesty I wasn't recording that info at all. And it's only part-saved me. But I can tell you exactly what the FIA records from their lap chart. This won't take into account chopping-and-changing on lap 1, just their position at the end of the first lap relative to where they started.

Round 1 - LH held position, JB lost 2 places
Round 2 - LH lost 1 place, JB held position
Round 3 - JB gained 1 place, LH gained 1 place
Round 4 - LH lost 2 places, JB gained 1 place
Round 5 - LH lost 1 place, JB lost five places
Round 6 - JB held position, LH lost 1 place
Round 7 - LH held position, JB held position (rather unsurprisingly!!)
Round 8 - LH lost 2 positions, JB lost 1 position

Thanks JRS!

So out of the 8 starts, each driver has an average total of -6 places or -1.33º per race. (although JB's average was skewed by losing 5 places in Round 5).

Suggests that they both struggle off the line. I wonder what the cause is.

McLaren had upgrades that they didn't use apparently according to
http://en.espnf1.com/europe/motorsport/story/52799.html

Lewis Hamilton has said that updates were available to McLaren for the European Grand Prix but that the team "didn't want to take the risk".

Hamilton finished fourth in Valencia, a full 46 seconds behind race winner Sebastian Vettel, and over 18 seconds behind third placed Mark Webber who was slowed by a gearbox problem. Hamilton told the Daily Telegraph that there had been a new set of updates that would have given him a boost in performance, but that McLaren had decided against running them due to reliability.

"They didn't want to take the risk," Hamilton said. "For safety reasons. The question is whether or not we would have finished (the race) if we had taken the risk, but then that is what risk is all about. We had another couple of tenths available to us which I think would have been quite strong and it would have helped look after our tyres... I pushed as hard as I could (to have them)."
