EV general discussion

ICE actually costs less when you factor in insurance costs and depreciation but you just totally ignore that. There is more to running a car than simple fuel costs.

Insurance is too much of a random numbers game to say it costs more or less for ICE vs EV, so yes, I have "ignored" that.

I'm going to assume you haven't read the rest of my post, since I A) quite clearly said "fuel" costs (hint: it's right there in the bit you quoted), and B) also addressed the depreciation part in my asterisked addendum at the bottom of the post.

But by all means carry on lying and making stuff up to try and prove that imaginary point that nobody is actually arguing against, the anti-EV brigade have never let facts get in the way before, so why start now

I don’t give a toss about depreciation - it’s impossible to fully predict, I can’t do anything about it, and I’d rather enjoy driving the car I just bought rather than worrying about when I’m going to get rid of it.

I bought an Insignia brand new for 32k list price, kept it for 9 years of trouble free motoring then traded it in for 2 grand…

Now this looks interesting… planning application at Whetherby services: https://uniformonline.harrogate.gov...s.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=S2PSUEHY0EK00

New HGV parking
Old HGV parking rebuilt with 118 new EV chargers (66 looks to be Tesla).
12 new accessible chargers in main car park
Existing 15 chargers retained
54 HGV chargers

184 new chargers to be added to the existing 15 with the option to add another 22 later. 221 rapids in one location is going to be tasty.

It’s a screening application so it’s going to be a way off but it’s what needs to happen.

Anyone seen EVs are going to be paying VED from 2025?
yeah. it had to happen sooner or later .... only crazy thing is it is retrospective which has never been done before which is a bit of a bait and switch for those who bought an EV with the promise of no tax. I am ok with it personally HOWEVR it is bloody stupid that our "ECO" diesel will pay less tax than our EV.

IF they are gonna charge EVs already bought then it should apply to every single car be it a 2021 EV, a 2011 petrol or a 1976 diesel imo.

What puts the VED change really into perspective is that it will be more than some people's annual fuel bill!

9,500 miles at 4 miles per kWh at 7.5p per kWh is £178.

yes wonder if tesla strategy of R&D on a cyber truck (despite pre-orders) will pay off versus trying to get into smaller ev's faster which would be attractive in europe,
and bring EU trade - are states like california doing anything to tax against big/heavy vehicles even if they are EV's.

Every trip on the motorway and its littered with ice cars broken down.

Yet to see an ev myself in that position.
if they aren't there I can't see them.

You might not get to see one broken down because, unlike ICE cars (that car easily be moved by being pushed) , a simple break down of some EV's can completly block a road for hours leaving you potentially unable to get by.

That is not unique to EVs and can and does happen to ICE cars with electronic parking brakes. I remember a VW Passat stuck blocking one fuel pump at our local garage, because the parking brake would not disengage.

As long as you have 12 battery any car will allow you to put your car in neutral and disengage the parking brake.

An EV can simply be pushed/dragged out the way if you know what you are doing… clearly these people didn’t. RTFM and all that.

Any competent break down company should have been able to deal with that in an hour including traveling there.

Boost the 12v, take the parking brake off and drag it out the way. Any competent break down company should have skates on the wagon if the car was truly dead, jack the rear, slide under the skates and drag, job jobbed.

The procedure is no different to any car with an electronic parking brake which have been common for over a decade.

Perhaps spare a thought for the owner of said vehicle who parked across the middle of a junction as it was rolling to a stop. That seemed like the sensible thing to do right?

There’s a mechanical cable release for the park pawl on the electric motor too…
