Why the assumption that we'll be better off economically within the EU? it might be a safe assumption to make in the short term due to the upheavel of leaving but long term you're only guessing. If you look beyond the major EU economies that flourished prior to joining the EU the rest of the members are mainly reliant on handouts. If the EU are so good at managing economies then why haven't they helped Greece/Spain etc?

Inflation is up again to 2.9% now.

Things are getting more and more expensive. Public sector workers on 1% increases a year won't stand for that.

The papers are saying that May will bring a end to austerity. I can only presume she has found labours magic money tree? To be honest, I'm surprised the public sector unions have been so patient with the cuts to pay.

Short and medium term the exit process will require a reshifting of focus in the economy which will have negative impacts, potentially very acute impacts. It'll also be expensive to fill much of the bureaucratic void that the EU will leave, putting pressure on budgets. In the long term, nobody knows, but we export to the EU because they are a large market for high value goods - that will always be a large market for anything we export.

They have and continue to do so.

I'll keep repeating this. I think its hilarious when a grey / brexit voter trashes labour and will vote tories because they want to 'protect the economy'

If they really did.... They would have voted remain and not let pensions get out of control aka triple lock.

When one of these people pretend to care about the economy I cant help but roll my eyes.
They do care about the economy and how it impacts them.... Nothing more.

In Stoke, we have a person who regularly phones in with his 2 cents (every day) who recites the 5 years paid health insurance mantra and 5 years no benefits for all immigrants. Like that's the only reason we're overspending. Despite statistically the burden on the NHS is OLD Citizens he's convinced that it is young healthy eastern European types... He claims that if we had no healthcare for immigrants the jungle in Calais would just disappear and illegal immigration will cease to be an issue.

But when asked about polish nurses he's all "welcome working people are welcome" So most of them then.... The mind boggles.

I sae this earlier on independent but I did take it with a pinch of salt. Confirmed now? The first thing I thought was 'shes found the magic money tree now?' too

I am on record in previous posts about dropping the triple lock through affordability, removing the universality of winter fuel allowance and allowing the social care system to be improved by making the older generation pay more towards it. Unlike Labour. I am 64.

tbh.. I think it should be geared more towards contributions based payments and work more like insurance albeit with a basic rate available to all (regardless of contributions) for 6 months then food stamps/food bank after that... must work for a set period before claiming again else back to food stamps or food bank only

bit like income protection insurance or somesuch, i can see the logic

enforce a living limit then set the vote limit 18 years before that?

That would ensure all people over that age would go and live in Spain. :D

You may as well introduce a mental capacity or political awareness test and make everyone pass it to allow them to vote. /notserious.

Maybe he means that skilled/neccessary migrants are welcome, but we already have enough Polish box packers in factories. The majority of EU migrants earn minimum wages working in unskilled jobs and likely pay about £400pa income tax. Clearly £400 per year doesn't pay a fair share for all the facilites used.
Not everything is as black and white as you claim.

EDIT: admittedly I didnt take NI in to account.

OFC but anyone else in the country on minimum wage pays the same and they will be here when they retire, the Eastern Europeans are likely to return to their homeland. It is never as simple as it seems.

I wonder how much of the population is on minimum wage or close to (many companies like to pay 10p more to claim they pay above national min)

Not necessarily. If they have brought up families here, their family overseas has diminished through age and we have a generous pension arrangement through years of NI paid in this country.
