So what is it about his faith that is not reconcilable with being a politician?

According to his statement, that's not the problem.

The problem is us. Our inability to accept that he can believe in the worship of Christ without being a gay-hating pro-lifer. Our fascination with his faith, and the assumed paradox, became an issue that overshadowed Lib Dem policy. While he remains leader, that won't change.

It's better he steps down. The Lib Dems have a fight on their hands to remain relevant, as two-party politics returns with a vengeance. They need the focus to be on their policies, for all of those voters afraid that Labour will mismanage the economy, and the Tories will destroy public services.

LD would potentially provide a sane counterbalance to May's authoritarian tendencies.

Who knows what skullduggery is going on. You couldn't write this stuff.

can't see libs going in with them again. They still haven't recovered from the toasting they took last time and the good work they did to keep some of the Tories "nastiness" in check was largely if not entirely ignored by the the voters as all they saw was that the libs were in "cahoots" with them rather than trying to balance them.

2nd referendum is pointless now. Article 50 already invoked and the EU have already been pretty clear that it's unlikely even if we did decide to stay that we would go back to the status quo, we have just burned everything from rebates to opt outs. So for the Libs to put themselves on to the Tory sacrificial pyre again in the hopes of getting a useless 2nd referendum is an act of lunacy.

So... This is why I will never ever ever in a million years vote conservative. They may have a decent manifesto every 20 years (if we are lucky) But the underlying foundations of the party are people this.

Rees-Mogg is spot on there, media trying to generate hysteria about the election result. Oh and least Rees-Mogg can speak English, unlike Kier Starmer in that interview who seemed unable to pronounce the word "mess" lol.

Its got nothing to do with being posh, it is his pompous attitude that has no place in politics.

same argument then but switch in attitude for posh...

(not exactly sure what was wrong with his attitude in that instance - he basically pointed out that the media are going a bit overboard re: this election result)

Except he's seemingly able to keep one thing separate from the other, so is a bit unfair for him to be mistreated over it the way he is.

The statement he made today is the statement he should have made four years ago. Instead he was intentionally vague and when finally saying that he doesn't think homosexuality is a sin came across as incredibly insincere. His resignation statement does seem to suggest that he thinks it is a sin but doesn't allow it to impact the way he votes or acts.

JRM is doubtless very intelligent and well spoken, but he's not a man for this century. He belongs about 200 years ago.

I thought his position was pretty reasonable for someone who is religious, but people saw it as a thread to pull on

Vince Cable would be a good choice, although Murdoch wont like it (so maybe that makes it even better)

My feeling too. Perhaps to do with his perceived beliefs overshadowing the party as a whole.

I think Cable would be the best bet too. He has experience, seems very good and he also has exposure - he's well known- which for a leader today is useful.

I think Jo Swinson has a good chance too.

ehh,

pomp·ous
ˈpämpəs/
adjective
adjective: pompous
affectedly and irritatingly grand, solemn, or self-important.
"a pompous ass who pretends he knows everything"

Not posh, just an irritating self-absorbed arrogant idiot lying through his teeth.

I'd like to see Vince in charge of the Lib-Dems. Not sure if they can stomach being in another Tory led coalition though. We really need some sensible politicians back in charge, it's not a game.
