F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

At the end of the day it is all about putting the quickest car you can on the track.Pair that with the best driver and race tactics and you have a win. If only life was so simple eh?

Silverstone this year we were the only team with a aero package that could take Copse flat out and look where we ended up.

This year we have Vettel and as much as i loved working with DC,this kid is something special. He walked around the factory a couple of weeks ago and shook the hand of everyone he met. Nobody had a bad word to say about him and he clearly has speed, looking forward to the upcoming season more than any other season i can remember.

He'll do well provided you lot actually give him a good car *cough STR car last year was better, and had the better engine*.

Your 1/2 right, we designed, built and developed the chassis, STR had a better engine and dare i say it 1 better driver. They would have done nothing without us developing the STR3

I thought the STR car had some of their own improvements to it, though I could be wrong.

Still was a silly move in '07 to move to Renault engines, what won the world championships for Renault were not the engines (Ferrari always had more power), but rather their aero and chassis imo.

The car was designed, built and developed by Red Bull Technology, the only difference was the power plant being so much better.

F1 is just a name. Its supposed to mark the pinnacle of motorsport - where the best personnel ally together to form a team which pits itself against other teams. Its supposed to represent the best in technology and the best in personnel. However, there comes a point where (like now), you have to adapt to the times. In 2008, there is major financial trouble, hence, F1 must adapt. In 3-5 years time, when times are good again, budgets will once again increase and we will move back to personalised gearboxes and engines.

Aha, now I've figured it out....

You see F1 - the name, the brand. Just a designation given to the world championship at some point in the past and still used out of inertia.

I see Formula One - the racing Formula that is supposed to encompass the best of racing technology available.within a set of reasonably unobtrusive restrictions. The absolute best drivers in the world going out in the absolute best racing cars.

I'm all for customer engines, customer gearboxes and even customer chassis in Formula One. I just don't think the Formula should make those customer parts mandatory. After all - how can you have a Constructors championship if no bugger is doing any constructing???

And before anyone chirps up - constructing something and assembling it from a kit of parts are not the same thing.

If customer cars are to be allowed, then those teams running them should be part of a different points system - their drivers still go for the main title, but the teams go into a Privateers cup. But if single-spec cars become mandatory (as Max has effectively suggested on more than one occasion) then they might as well scrap the Constructors championship as it'll be utterly meaningless.

i thought the problem was when the used ferrari engines it was before the rev limits and RBRs engines were always 2 or 3 revisions behind the works team. with the renault engine they would get much newer engines.

That worked "well" it didn't it.

nope not at all because he had to design the car to fit a ferrari package anyway (because they couldnt cancel the contract), so the Ferrari engined Redbull car was always going to be faster.

if he had been able to tighten up the rear of the car around the renault engine they would have had better aero efficiency to the rear of the car which would overcome some of the short comings of the lower BHP.

Of coarse i dont know too much about either car so i could be talking out of my.......

Too right.

This is probably the best driver that Red Bull have ever had. He is the guy who can probably compete against the best that F1 has to offer (Hamilton, Alonso, etc). Coulthard and Webber just dont have that ability, though Webber should be great as Vettel's No.2.

Also, I would like to see what Newey can come up with now that he knows that he has a good driver piloting the car, who will get the most out of it. Just knowing this should motivate the people in the factory who design/build the car. This factor certainly came into play when a lot of Ferrari personnel were rejuvinated and motivated, when MS/Brawn/Byrne moved there in the mid-90s.

Specifically, what is Max proposing?

My understanding is that he would like everyone to run (near) identical engines and gearboxes.

What else? Give a list please.

I love Hakkinen's epic pause to think of an answer in the second vid!
Be fair to the guy. He has to
  • translate the question into Finnish
  • decide between 'Yes' and 'No'
  • add a few words to make the answer more interesting
  • translate the answer back into English
  • deliver the answer
I think that it is a little harsh to criticise an ex-F1 champion for being indecisive :D

Hakkinen is well known for his ability to answer extemely conplicated questions with a simple Yes or No, followed by stairing at the interviewer with a look of "ha, suck on that!"
