F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Read something earlier today that I'd never heard before - apparently, Alonso raced just one Renault chassis (R26-03) all through the 2006 season. There can't be many occasions when that has happened, especially in the modern era and even more especially when the title is won with that car!

A remarkable feat for both car and driver.

He tried some of the other chassis during testing and didn't like them as much. They should be identical - but they never are. Always going to me small differences in them.

Can't think of any more modern cases of this. Best case of a long term chassis is Lotus 72 R5 - First outing September 1970 *I think* and was used through to October 1975. Only F1 car to need 2 pages for it's race history.

The 2009 regs don't specify "no aero bits between the wheels" they break the car up into cross sections and define a maximum bodywork width etc. These sections were based on the approximate size of 2008 cars so by pushing the sidepod inlets rearwards it's possible to have turning vanes like RBR & Ferrari while still remaining in the rules.

Great post :)

Thanks for that, i was sure there would be some way around it, but wanted to check :D

The regulations are available from fia.com but if you can make head or tail of them you're doing better than I am. I tried to work out how Ferrari could have their barge boards and couldn't even work out which section of the document covered that area :(

You said the redball was going to be "different", but it doesnt look very special its almost ferrari like.

i wonder what its like under its skin....

didnt renault also say when the car was released that it had very impressive aero and the makings of a very fast chassis?

that didnt last long after the first test.

All F1 cars are WC winning cars until they get to Melbourne, at which point a majority become the midfield..happens every time lol!

I think the one thing that Red Bull have going for them this year is that they have a top line driver, for the first time. At least Vettel will be able to extract the maximum out of the car, where previously Coulthard/Webber would've been unable to.

Anybody know when the next test date is?
