F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

From what I can tell:

Williams are running a 2009 rear wing and 2008 front
Honda are running a 2008 rear wing and a 2009 front
BMW are running a full 2009 aero kit.

Everyone else is running 2008 spec cars

Whats going on inside in relation to KERS is anyones guess tho.

So... first impressions... MY GOD THEY ARE UGLY! The front wings are going to fall off all the time, the massive front tyres are makign the cars very grippy at the front end compaired to the rear, and from what were seeing, BMW are WAAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of the rest of the pack for Aero developments atleast.

But still.... i cannot get over how ugly they are! What will the FIA do if the changes dont provide any more overtaking, and all they have basically done is make F1 a laughing stock.

Think ill buy a 2009 spec model of a few cars, just so I can show my kids in 20 years time what a complete screw up the FIA made making them look like clown cars!

I got the impression that the Williams had a 2009 front wing too, as it's almost as wide as the wheelbase.

Well it may not be a 2008 spec, but its definately not a 2009. 2009 spec will not allow for changes in height (i.e. it will be flat all the way accross) and the centre 3rd or somethign is standardised, thin, and flat.

Is it the hole quite far underneath the front wing/nose? And they have various things taped on but assume they are weights or measuring devices of some sort.

The taped on bits will be air movement sensors.

There is quite a substantial hole cut into the back of the sidepod[i think KERS might be causing heat issues] Got a photo on work pc of the engine cover and you can see the where they have installed KERS.

Good to see Martin at the BBC

And god no, don't send F1 to Laguna Seca, they would butcher it. Same with all the other amazing American tracks, Road America/Atlanta, Mid Ohio to name afew.

Either Indianapolis or some car park track would do :p *Remembers the Caesar's Palace track*, Detroit perhaps?

BMW have been running a 2008 diffuser today for some reason.

Also, they have been running a three element top rear wing which is illegal as per the current 2009 technical regulations - presumable they have added the third element (which at a guess is worth something like 0.5% of total downforce) in order to simulate the higher rear downforce that they expect to develop to by race 1 (or perhaps just to substitute the force deficit the 08 diffuser brings).

Very interesting pictures though! January/February will be a busy time for F1 aero departments ;)

(and yes, I also work at renault, the sig ought to give it away :p I don't know the Richard from the above pictures but I certainly recognise him from around the factory)
