F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Am I right in thinking that a team must formally enter the championship 40 days before the start of the first race weekend?

So, "honda" have 1 day 14 hours and 45 minutes to declare publicly that they have entered?

You reckon Newey will be departing RBR in the next couple of years? Autosport are reporting that he could take on a more consultative role instead: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73261

The feelings about restrictive regulations in F1 have been echoed by FIA president Max Mosley, who believes that it has been a mistake to make the sport's rules so tight.

"It's a fault with the regulations," explained Mosley. "They have constricted the areas where they can work to keep speeds and costs under control to the point where you get the best returns by endlessly refining every single component of the car."

Cant believe Max Mosely said this.
People like (Colin) Chapman, (John) Cooper or (Keith) Duckworth would be lost in modern F1. We have this culture of minimal innovation and endless refinement.

One of the smartest quote he has said and i agree whole heartedly. But he probably won't change the regulations becuase hes too much of a baby. :p

That is a massively important comment from him. He's finally admitting that the rules are at fault and have forced F1 to be cookie cutter cars.

With the 2008 rear wing again though...

Hence my quote being "Vettel fastest in 2009 SPEC car!"
CoreKrogoth might want to read the reports on testing rather than just looking at the time sheets.
Running an 08 wing and only being a tiny fraction infront of an 09 car actually just makes Vettel's run all that more impressive. I'd have to assume they ran the 08 wing with simulated 09 spec levels of downforce however. If not, then.. nicely done RBR.

Agreed, no matter how much 'simulation' and 'adjusting' they do, Mclaren are NOT running a 2009 spec car. Who knows what setup that wing has...

And also, does anyone else not find it slightly worrying that McLaren, one of the top teams in F1, has built its pre season test car without the correct setup to run at the pre season tests? Its like a WRC team turning up to a gavel test, but only ordering tarmac tyres! Its either a MASSIVE oversight byt McLaren, or the indication that they are not happy/not up to speed with the development of the rear end of the car.

Then again - they could have some secret clever wing they don't want everyone else seeing...

This was my thinking also, but then surely there is no better way to test something than to run it....

They could very easily have just screwed up, and haven't fixed it yet.

I'm worried.

I'm worried because the main driver who I expect to be able to put Vettel in his place is Hamilton. If Vettel does better than Hamilton this year, I may have to eat a hat of some sort.

I'm still confident that Hamilton and McLaren will perform well once racing starts. I'm surprised though, that the Red Bull car is so good and gives a very good indication of where it will be in the pecking order in Australia.

Nope. I think those types of things used to happen in the 1970s, but I dont remember secret car parts or sandbagging of any sort, in the last decade or so. If you have a car part, in this day and age, you will have to test it out on the track, rather than risk 10 pts on race day, if the car part completely fails or gets your car banned.

Keep in mind that the championship will be very close this year, so by potentially having a DNF in only 1 race (due to lack of testing) and losing 10 pts could lose you the title.

In 2009, teams/drivers will be fighting for every single point they can get.

Red Bull's car was kept hidden away for ages with no-one seeing it, it gets released and is very, very quick. You accept this. Yet you have no confidence in the much bigger team doing something similar with just a single part of the car?

Plenty of sandbagging went on last season during the Friday testing day and it wasn't until qually one/two that the true speed of the top cars was always apparent.

As for the rear wing, with the rules as tight as they are there is very little room for manoeuvre and come up with something interesting, especially in areas where it cannot be easily seen. So if McLaren have something genuinely interesting for the rear they may want to keep it away from being copied.

who knows, they might have a full 2009 spec wing, but have seen RBR's rear wing and want to copy it already :D
