F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

I see,

Any idea when the rest of the world will use HD as a standard,

I dont see why they dont already,

I mean it can easily be downscaled for SD channels or does it just simply come down to cost?

bandwidth, cost and testing.

like the onboard camera have very little bandwidth to work with (apparently) and have to work in hostile conditions. Fuji did HD coverage because they used there own cameras, but onboard stuff was still FOM.

From a Q&A session with Adrian Newey on ITV-F1.com

Q: Renault seem quite confident of running their KERS system in Australia. You’ve got the same system as them, but will you necessarily follow the same timeframe for its introduction?

AN: No, we’ll race it when we feel we’re ready to race it and when we feel it’s definitely a benefit.
And also when it can justify its cost, because for the flyaway races the air freight costs are fairly significant for all this stuff.
I underlined the bit I like. So much for cost-cutting in F1 then!

Only just heard about this - if its true / it happens it would be fantastic

Just because its "Virgin" (of course they may use another associated brand, but I doubt it) it doesnt mean it will be a success, but it at least means the team should be reasonably well funded for a few years

Virgin Mercedes anyone? (Get the jokes over an done with early :))

I hope its not all hot air, however Branson is a bit of a basket case so would not put it past him to pop his cherry in motor racing proper with honda! Hope he manages to keep his feet on the ground...

I have my 4 day ticket for the Melbourne GP booked.
Total cost £78 :D

Get to see The Who in concert at the end also.

Really looking forward to it as I've only ever been to Le Mans and a couple of BTCC days.

Just gotta wangle a few days off work now ;)

Bit odd for Virgin to be interested though.

He's got no (publicised) interest in motorsport, so you'd think the primary reason for him to get involved would be to make a profit. With most of the teams barely breaking even, a back marking team like Honda are not going to be raking it in - especially without any sponsors.

If this does indeed happen I can foresee another Spyker/Alex Sneijder/Vijay Mallya* scenario with the team being bankrolled until the shareholders get ****ed off and pull the plug.

*I know, I know - but it's just a matter of time

As we all know Virgin is a huge brand, having two cars flying round an F1 track will be fantastic publicity, plus looking at some of the other links he's been to several races and seems to be enjoying it.

I really hope he buys Honda F1, would be sad to see them out of this season.

Oh yes, because all his other ventures were for his love of long haul air travel, coke, trains and mobile phones.... nothing to do with money...
