F1 2015 - Teams and Drivers - Who goes where?!

Given the choice between a reserve driver for an F1 team in an era where testing is banned, and competing in a different race series, surely the intelligent move is to keep racing?

You would think so, but I guess V8 may be a little too out of the way, if he went over and did well he might not be able to make the impact he'd want... Personally I think it'd be a great chance to drive in what looks like a fun series and live in Australia for a year or two! :D

Like (i think it was you?) said before, being a reserve driver nowadays is a pretty pointless position.

I'm sure the only thought in these guys heads is F1, and the hope that if they hang around that environment long enough they may get a chance further down the line.

Yea probably the thinking, which is a shame in some respects, but I guess they figure they can go to other series even if they don't manage to make it in F1 so it's worth the chance even if it is very, very small... Especially in this case, Red Bulls conveyor belt of young drivers is coming into it's own at the moment.
 
So the FIA gave him a lifetime ban for what exactly? Drinking an unapproved champagne brand while in the paddock?

No. It was being a cheating scumbag after Piquet dobbed him in.

From an FIA press release :
"The FIA condemns the selective leaking of extracts from Mr Briatore’s pleadings to the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris.

The FIA rejects the allegations made in these leaks and confirms that the decision to impose a sanction against Mr Briatore was made by an overwhelming majority of the attending World Motor Sport Council members."

This would be the same FIA who's investigation was criticised by the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris. The FIA is not a court. It can't really find anyone guilty of anything more than you or I can. Additionally, the current president of the FIA at the time was known to personally dislike Flavio. A fact that was pointed out by the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris.

Briatore protests his innocence (I'm sure he's not completely), and if and has been free to participate in F1 since 2010, regardless of the FIA's wishes.

Anyway this thread is about drivers, so all this stuff re Flavio is neither here nor there.

Yep. In my view winning GP2 or signing up as an F1 reserve driver without a full time drive elsewhere are two things that do more harm than good to plans of becoming an F1 driver.

I can understand drivers being a bit blinkered, but I'd at least expect their management teams to realise this. Hopping around the 2nd tier (GP2, FR3.5, IndyCar, etc) keeping your race craft up is a much better plan than signing to a team to stand in the back of the garage with your fingers crossed for a year.

It'll be good to see him at Le Mans. Hope he actually does well. He's going to be in one of the contender cars, probably not the winning one - Porsche will want one of the full year cars to win that but weird things happen at Le Mans.

What is TV coverage like for WEC? I've never watched or followed it before, but with Button rumoured to be going there I had a look and the racing looks absolutely fantastic, something I'd like to start watching now even if Button doesn't end up there next year. I've got Sky Sports but never really bother with it apart from the F1 and footy.
 
Best bet is to stream it from WEC website.

Except for Le Mans, there the best bet is to get a 1 month eurosport subscription and watch online.

WEC doesn't have the rights to stream Le Mans. :rolleyes:
 
That's because WEC is FIA while Le Mans is ACO.

WEC is on Motors TV for the non Le Mans rounds. The coverage is pretty extensive with decent commentary, but ruined by being the shoddy sub SD quality Motors pumps out.

Le Mans is on Eurosport and the coverage is frankly fantastic. Yes they may mess about jumping between channels, but they will almost always show the entire race live with a consistent lineup of passionate quality commentators.

And going to see WEC rounds other than Le Mans is cheap as chips. It's not very popular with fans but is a great casual race to watch. I've been to Silverstone before, and will likely be heading back next year.

Does motors tv show the free practice session? Wec site says half 7 tonight but nothing on the motors tv epg.

"These are busy times for McLaren’s Ron Dennis. If rumours are to be believed, Dennis is busy raising money to buy 26 percent of McLaren Group Ltd. This is currently 50 percent owned by Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding, the investment arm of the Kingdom of Bahrain, with 25 percent belonging to the Ojjeh Family’s TAG Group and the remaining shares being owned by Dennis. He took over management control in January on the basis that he would then raise the money to buy control of the whole group. There have been reports that Dennis will buy 25 percent of the Mumtalakat shares and 12.5 percent of the TAG shares. if true, this would give him 62.5 percent of the company. The problem is that the McLaren Group is worth a great deal of money and the word is that Dennis is working to a deadline.

Again the numbers are not certain but the company is worth at least $800 million, which would mean that Dennis needs to find at least $300 million to complete such a deal. The long-term goal remains to IPO the company in the longer term, Dennis saying in 2011 that this would be in the pipeline for around 2016 and that may help to attract investors.

The team still has to decide who will join Fernando Alonso (although the Spaniard has still not yet been officially confirmed) but the choice seems to be between Jenson Button, Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne. There has been talk of Telefónica coming in to sponsor the team with its Movistar brand and in recent days Ron Dennis was spotted in Denmark. He is believed to have been in talks with Anders Holch Povlsen, the owner of the fashion retail business Bestseller, who is reckoned to be worth around $4.8 billion from apparel and accessories sold under 11 different brand names. Holch Povlsen has been a supporter of Kevin Magnussen for several years with his Jack & Jones brand and is already a McLaren sponsor with the asks.com brand. He is also big on environmental causes and owns more than 130,000 acres in Scotland, on which he is planting trees.

Denmark is a country with a number of huge companies, notably the transportation conglomerate A.P. Moller–Maersk Group, the pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk, which uses motor racing to highlight its diabetes treatments in the US, Danske Bank and the Carlsberg brewing company. There are also high worth individuals such as Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, who is reckoned to be worth $10.6 billion as a result of his Lego empire. Kristiansen was spotted in the F1 paddock in Monza this year and Lego currently has a promotion ongoing with Ferrari and Shell. Dennis has already said that he would like to see Danish companies support the efforts of Magnussen. The remarks were echoed by Lars Seier Christensen, the CEO of investment bank Saxo.

It is worth noting also that there are stories in the Danish newspaper Herning Folkeblad suggesting that a working group is due to meet with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to discuss a potential Danish Grand Prix for 2018. The group is being represented by politician Helge Sander, who served as the Minister for Science until February 2010. It is reported that a meeting is scheduled for January. Sander has confirmed the bid."
