F1 Testing 2012 - Week 3, Barcelona

So it's primary purpose was not for aero gain? what was it for then? How come teams are now still trying to find the lost aero gain from it's ban?

So it's primary purpose was not for aero gain?

Nope. The exhaust pipes are definitely primarily there for getting exhaust gases out of the engine. The clue is in the name 'exhaust pipe' :) The aerodynamic benefit of directing that exhaust gas into the diffuser is secondary to that. Hence why it needed a rule change to ban it for this season.

At Valencia, the ability to change engine maps from extreme qually settings to a more reliable race mode was taken away for the remainder of the 2011 season by a rule change. At Silverstone, off-throttle blowing was banned by changing the rule on how much throttle opening you could retain while off the loud pedal, a rule change which was reversed for the remainder of the season.

LOL ok then they were not designed to give aero gains, if you really say so :)

I didn't say that.

It was hard to ban it under the moveable aero rules, because it's primary purpose would have to be for aerodynamic gain. Which it wasn't - it was to get exhaust gases out of the engine, the aerodynamic benefits were secondary. Admittedly, they were definitely designed in. But still secondary.

Read. What. I'm. Typing.

*sigh*

The systems were designed to give aero gains. The system's primary aim was to give them aero gains from exhaust gases.

But how d'you ban it under the rules concerning moveable aero devices?

  1. Prove that the primary purpose of the exhaust pipes is for aerodynamics - can't do that.
  2. Prove that the primary purpose of the engine is for generating exhaust gases to be blown over the diffuser - can't do that.
  3. Prove that we're in a bizarre world where 2+2 equals eleventy squillion, the sky is green with purple clouds, and therefore it's an aerodynamic device just because - can't do that.
All you can do is change the rulebook. Which they have done, for this season.

I agree I was not a fan of the FIA attempts to ban it mid-season, but still they were using it for aero gains.

You can bang that drum until it's worn out, it still doesn't change the fact that they couldn't prevent teams from using it as it didn't contravene the rules as they were written. That's why the FIA had to make specific new rulings, as they did at Silverstone, to counter aspects of the design. And also why they now have a new rule concerning where you put the exhaust pipes.

now that we've flogged the dead horse that is EBD and the FIA being rubbish, can someone tell me if theres anything interesting and F1 related coming up between now and the australian GP?

Opening of the sky sports f1 channel on Friday should have some good stuff on over the course of the next week.

Is it really going to be close this year? Ferrari seem to have dropped the ball, the Lotus and Merc teams seem to have good pace, but they could still end up battling for 3rd and 4th, which leaves McLaren and Red Bull out front again

Thank you JRS.

He still never said anything that backed you up :)

FIA issued new technical directives banning EBD under the moveable aero ruling, we can argue the rights and wrongs of using that rule to ban them all day long but that is the rule they used to attack the use of EBD.

Which is what I have said all along.

Good odds on Schumacher and Raikkonen for Oz, just put some down on them, also both Mclarens to cover it, cant believe Button is 9/1!

interesting read

it would apear that mercedes have more pace than mclaren but higher tyre degredation

To be fair, after the testing session, it is very difficult to call it. Until Australia, nobody knows for sure how things have panned out.

Normally, I am willing to make predictions and (rightly or wrongly) feel confident about how the season will pan out. However, after this season's testing, all I am willing to say with any confidence is that RBR will have the best car and the rest of the field will be fighting for 2nd place.

Providing Vettel can match his form of last year, I can't see anyone even getting remotely close to him. If Vettel however, makes a few errors (or suffers from poor form), then we may have a great season on our hands.

Another point of note is that F1 is being marketed this year with the tagline that there are more World Champions competeing this year than in previous years. What they are not telling you is that MSc and Kimi are spent forces who are not the force they once were. They are also not telling you that Hamilton was a disaster in the 2nd half of the season. Also consider that Alonso could quite possibly be in a slow car this year, which may take him out of the equation.

The only World Champions who I am expecting to show their class are Button and the reigning champ Vettel.

I hope that I am proved wrong and hope that this year we see Hamilton, Button, Vettel and Alonso, all competing closely for wins. But my gut tells me that Vettel will become triple World champ and with it, establish himself as an all-time great.

If the FIA are smart, they will do something about the RBR domination (in Winter 2012) - they have to change something. Right now, every department of RBR is 'best in class'. They have no weaknesses. In 2010, their main weakness was that their drivers were squabbling over No.1 status and taking points off of eachother in the process. But now that Webber has acknowledged his position within the team, I can't see how any other driver except for Vettel can win the title (in 2012).

why will RBR have the best car? mclaren had the better looking car at the tests and RBR didnt get what they expected from their upgrade package (better looking as looked more on rails)
