I usually think of these things when it's too late, but say if I picked 5 cheap defenders all rated at £4m, and played 3-5-2 and basically used most of the money for fantastic attacking players, is there any drawback to doing this? Or is it better to have a more balanced team?
Thats usually been my theory but if you look at the stats, the top cb's get there fair share of points and you get more for your money (Ronaldo - £12m, Carra £7m).

My experience in my last 2 season told me that Lampard is a must !!! The guy is unstoppable 2 seasons running, I had him and was 3rd in my league at Christmas with only 1 transfer changes ! lol That was with Henry not playing for a good part of it too. Last season he wasn't as good or may be Ronaldo got better and I got him instead. Either of these players creates chances and scores in midfield and thats what you want. Make them captain and you get double points.

So each week check who you are playing against and assign captains accordingly, and if a team is playing twice, do the transfer in that week to reflect that to get that extra 2 points (at least).

I will change it around before the start of the season, I'm sure.

Kirkland - Primus - Arca/Cattermole - Zamora

I wanted some Liverpool players in there, but with Benitez' tinkering I didn't know who, had people in and out, not sure really.

Finnan should play most games so I would drop Clichy (too injury prone for my liking) and include him. I doubt Zamora will play as many games as he did last year so recover the extra cost of Finnan by dropping Zamora for someone like Earnshaw.

The rotation thing is missleading; yes we don't play the same 11 every game but the majority of the side plays every game and its only the wing areas and 2nd forward that has been rotated. Reina, Carra, Agger, Finnan, Gerrard, Torres and proberly Alonso, will start most if not all our games and did last year up untill we rested a few for the CL semi and final (with the exception of Torres, where Kuyt played instead).

I originally had Finnan in there, but dropped him due to cost.

Who did you swap him for and who did you spend the extra cash on? Because Finnan usually gets his fair share of points, gets lots of assists (for a defender anyway) and we usually keep as many clean sheets as any other side around.

Liverpool aren't playing a game on the second gameweek though, meaning you're gonna have to use a substitute or you're going to have to transfer him.

but surely they will then play 2 games in another gameweek to make up for that

Yeah, I always pick Finnan in my proper Fantasy Football entry, for this team I wanted the extra for 2 good center backs and 2 good midfielders.

Yeh, but this is why you use your free transfers. I've got Carragher in my team at the moment, but only because I know one of my subs will be playing and be able to step in. Havn't bothered with any other Liverpool players as there's no point having 2/3 of them when they miss the 2nd week. Just transfer them in when they have a game week with two games.
