Far Cry 4 due this November

The smoothness line doesn't exist in my XML file! I hab mouse acceleration off in settings yet it's still laggy though.

3770k 4.5GHz, 16GB 2100MHz, GTX980 Gaming.

I get 60fps for the most part - but do get some drops to 45 on Ultra (1080p)

4770k, 8gb, gtx980 gaming

i'm really getting in to it. played a few hours of it so far and although the storyline is a bit here and there, the gam play is quite good one you customize the controls to the way you want them.

i heard it makes performance worse

Yes it does as its more eye candy but I was joking as he has a new Nvidia GPU.

I run it at 1920x1440p (on my old monitor now) with no AA and whatever FPS I mentioned above as I forget now, think it was 70ishFPS.

Any type of AA kills it for me at that preset.

I thought that but then I was watching Total Biscuit's first thoughts on this game last night and he seemed to have a target reticle for his bow. Maybe it's somewhere in the options menu. I've got the same issue TB has, sometimes the frame rate is fine, hovering around 70fps, but then I get random spikes where it crashes to about 40. I might turn off AA completely to see if that makes it better, but it's really annoying that Ubisoft can't just get things right.

Apart from it being a "re-skinned" Far Cry 3, im loving it so far - played for about 7 odd hours and still only on about Mission 4 :D

Mouse control is awful. Absolutely awful.

Can run 1080p Nvidia OK but even High on 1440p and it stutters (good fps generally still).

Really messy state this is in at launch

Edit - as discussed in the AMD section on this, the stuttering is the same for me and I'm on nV.

Looking at the charts on there, vRAM usage is 2.4GB on low @1080p so most likely this is my problem. I'm going to have to look into it with AB

Here's the nv breakdown of all the technologies used, as well as performance costs for the in-game settings:

Far Cry 4 Graphics, Performance and Tweaking Guide

I'm not sure if this has already been linked but it makes for interesting reading. I'm going to turn postFX down as it says:

[Post FX is] .. used in combat and cutscenes, these settings aren't to everyone's taste, and if that's the case simply turn them down. You'll get an improved framerate when it's all kicking off in combat, and you might find it easier to see, aim, and shoot, too.

Wonder if it just means the performance increase will help?

And more info on texture setting:
Under the hood, the Dunia 2 engine requires at least 1GB of video memory (VRAM) to run at minimum settings according to the official system requirements. In our testing, however, we saw the lowest texture setting using 2GB of VRAM. Curious, we measured the amount of VRAM used at 1920x1080 at each detail level, with max settings and SMAA enabled, after a 5 minute fixed path drive taking in several of Kyrat's sights:

It then goes on to say:

The use of additional VRAM in our tests is likely a modicum of texture caching, intended to accelerate the rendering of textures in the scene you're approaching, preventing stuttering while the necessary items are loaded from your hard drive into memory. If you've got a GPU with no additional headroom, such as the recommended GeForce GTX 680, it'd be wise to load Far Cry 4 onto a SSD to minimize the delay between the game requesting a texture and it being loaded. On a slow mechanical hard drive, there could certainly be stuttering that detracts from your experience.

And, final edit (promise), nv's own list of suggested optimal settings for each set up (7XX Series and up):

I can't start the game (Uplay version).
I just get a blank screen. I don't have any freaking joypads! Only USB devices are my mouse and keyboard. Disabling HID devices and unplugging them doesn't do anything.
How frustrating.

What settings should I use for my 290?

Put everything on "max" @2560x1080 with borderless mode and it feels pretty good overall (getting 40+ FPS) but there is the "stuttering" effect that everyone else is getting.

edit:

oh and on the first play through, as soon as i go to open the door where the guy is being tortured, far cry 4 has stopped responding
