FIFA World Cup 2022 Group B ** spoilers ** (England, Iran, USA, Wales)

Pretty pathetic to back down to be honest. Getting booked for it casts more light on the issue and bring even further attention to what a backwards hole it is.
 
We're meant to be taking the knee too - how will that go down? Can't see Iran joining in.

Maguire is starting apparently in a back four. :o

Exactly this, virtue signalling wearing a stupid armband does nothing. If they really cared they would have boycotted the world cup. it's the same performative nonsense the likes of Neville et all come out with whilst taking a nice big fat stack of cash from the Qataris.

You may call it unfair but ultimately it is true, western countries could have boycotted this world cup if they really cared, but they(we) don't so yeah, time to stop virtue signalling and just play football and deal with the cesspit that is FIFA afterwards. Clearly Qatar have them over a barrel.

A joint statement from the Football Associations of England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland about the One Love armband: "Fifa has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play. As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in Fifa World Cup games.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.

"We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to Fifa in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways."

But why not do both? You can participate and still be critical of things? Applies to everything in life.

Because participating enables the regime. I guess though we sell a lot of arms to Qatar so perhaps we should step off our moral high horse for once.

Italy did the right thing, they cared about the issues as they boycotted this WC
 
Anyone who thinks our FA are any less corrupt than FIFA should just look at who they allowed to become the owners of Man City and Newcastle, money talks and the more money you have the further you can go.

If you believe the FA, UEFA or FIFA give a toss about the fans you are sadly mistaken, as I mentioned previously the time to act was when it was awarded as now it'll just be ignored and hidden behind "just enjoy the football", luckily Sir Gareth's managerial acumen should hopefully see and early exit for us.

bit puzzled about this - does Qatar have an issue with racism as well or indeed Iran - or is it just the fact that England does ?

More silly virtue signalling but as soon as it costs us anything we cave in.
