Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn

So I am complety new to this and dispite no1 giving my pointers on why I should get it I just went for it. What are the classes like? I dont know nothing about this game??

I am not sure what role I would want to play in this game. I am thinking about a tank role but not sure which would be the best to fit my play style. I am more about being visual with effects if that is possible.

Gladiator - General tank class. killing normal mobs completing quests is very much a mixture of three abilities. However you will never have to wait to get into a dungeon, and tanking in a dungeon is quite fun. (played up until level 28)

Archer - Whole lot of abilities to use, very good damage, but as with all DPS classes, you'll wait a while to get into a dungeon (played up untill level 29)

Pugilist - Melee DPS class, uses fist weapons. they have different stances which do more damage to targets from behind or from a flank. I've not personally played Pugilist yet, however the combat seems quite complex/rewarding compared to the other two classes i've played. DPS class so you'll wait a while for dungeons!

Lancer - Melee DPS (polearms) - Very much the same as pugilist from what i've seen.

Marauder - Melee DPS - (two handed weapons) - Can also tank/has tanking abilities. so quite a hybrid. Never played so unsure on how they are in combat!

Conjurer - Standard healing class, low damage so slow questing on your own, however, won't take long for you to get in a dungeon. (Played untill level 15)

Thaumaturge - Caster DPS, can also heal IIRC - I know very little about this class, other than its a spell caster, I'd assume will focus more on dealing damage than healing.

Arcanist - Caster DPS - Can summon pets too. Correct me if i'm wrong but I THINK they can also heal, or have healing abilities?

Sorry if i've missed anything out, but that's just my experience so far!

EDIT: All of the characters abilities are flashy and pretty looking if that makes any difference.

Arcanist gets a similar heal to the Conjurer as I understand but is more damage orientated with regards to stats and traits so won't get anywhere near as strong heals. Worked well earlier on in the first bunch of dungeons as a replacement but dunno how it holds up once the dungeons get harder.

Thaumaturge is pure offence with some crowd control.

Pugilist has some dodge but I highly doubt you could make him an effective dodge tank. His armour is the standard Disciple of War stuff with nowhere near as strong Def/MDef stats as the Glad/Mar armour.

The Arcanist (or rather the Scholar from 30 onwards) is focused more on group and AoE healing from what I hear, whereas the Conjurer/White Mage is more of the tank/single target healer with HoTs.

I think I am going to go with the Gladiator class - what would I do if I dont like it? Just make another character?

If you don't like it, level it to level 10, and then you can change class to whatever you like :) (just have to go and visit the relevant guildmaster!) Or if you are impatient, just make a new character. I'd recommend on sticking to just one character though.

To swap class its just as easy as swapping weapon types. Gladiators use Sword and Board, if I want to level my marauder, I'll switch to a big two handed axe.

You can also mix abilities from each class. For example, the marauder has an ability called Bloodbath which you obtain at level 8. (Ability that absorbs HP of your next attack) - Which is obviously quite useful to a Gladiator tank.

Get yourself a Marauder weapon, level the marauder to level 8; obtaining the ability. Then equip it to your gladiator bar :)

Ohh its Arena bassed!? wonder if there are PvP weapon/armour rewards .. similar to how WoW is. Time to read up!

From what I've gathered there will be systems similar to WoW. I mean if you look at the Character Screen there is a PvP stat that sounds like it could be something similar to Resilience. While I'm all for Arena, I do hope they add some Battleground-type maps.

Looks like Frontlines is a Battlegrounds-esque kinda thing. You set foot in the area, you become part of the battle, I guess similar to FATEs, only with... people! :D

Well I am trying to get away from wow so by the sounds of things this could be it for me :) me and my brother both do arena on WoW atm lol

Few tips from me.. When you first start, you will hate the map. however, you will get used to it.

There are also little tip boxes that appear from time to time, its best to read them through, as they really do help you quite a bit if your brand new to the game (I'm still using them even after levelling two characters over half way!)

Oh, sweet! Haven't really looked much into the PvP yet so was only aware of Arena. That is fantastic news though, sounds like it could be a lot of fun if done right :D

Still struggling to find time to get back onto FFXIV. Stupid, stupid new releases.
