Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn

Not been on for a while now thanks to other games, sub runs out in a few days so thought I'd jump back on.

Just seem to have hit a stop point. Level 34, my next story quests need me to be level 35 and getting exp is bloody slow.

Any idea why I get: "New thread cannot be created due to either you have reached to your daily limit or your main character's level is not high enough." when trying to post on the official forums? Been like it since I registered the other day!

I`m on now, waited until I was happy that there were no issues..

Been an avid Final Fantasy fan since I started all those years ago as a kid on the NES, followed it from then on with every consecutive console.

Phoenix server.
Marauder - just started in Limsa Lominsa....

Looking very good so far.

Revo.

Im debating picking this up! Would be playing on the ps3/ps4 though but i imagine its mostly the same bar visuals and controls!

Whats it like? I watched 4 video reviews at lunch and all were very positive on this game

Hello, finally got the key for this, been on my radar for a while. I have 30 days game time to test it out with. I've been hunting for an MMO for a while and nothing has quite filled my cup other than ArchAge which is still unconfirmed to coming to the EU. So playing it in chinese was getting tiresome.

Anyway, I normally play a fast hitting, dagger wielding high burst DPS character. Or a tank.

What class would you guys suggest? And how do classes work exactly?

Thanks

I've been playing this a fair bit the last few months (on Cerberus).

Bard is level 50 and up to ilvl83 and working on levelling up the other Disciples of War.

The closest thing to that is probably Pugilist. Fast attacking dps char.. Think the only dps class that can really fit the bill of burst is Thaumaturge (/Black Mage).

Tank your only 2 choices atm are Marauder or Gladiator. Taken both to around level 20 and much prefer the Marauder atm but its personal preference really.

What exactly are you referring to by 'how do they work'?

As in, is there talent trees? Or is it like Lineage 2 where every few levels you unlock a set skill in your level path?

I've read it's not very common how it tackles the class system, that you can select any race and be any class. I just can't find much information about it online.

Hi All

I was looking forward to this game but somehow it completely passed me, now its been out a while what's the general consensus? what is the best platform for it? I didn't play the betas so is it worth buying for I assume the 30 days with the box?

I've not even played it yet but at 14 Euros it's hardly a waste if it doesn't work out.

It works like this. Any one character you make can become any class and job in the game, including crafting classes. So nothing is fixed, you can change your class at any time (except in combat or dungeons) simply by changing what weapon you have equipped. So you can have a fully maxed out character.

There are no skill trees in FFXIV. You unlock skills as you level up your class. Certain specific skills are obtained in class story quests, and more specific higher level skills are obtained when you unlock a "job," which is kinda like a more specified version of your class. So if I chose Pugilist as my initial class, once I hit level 30 and had all the requirements met, I have the option of unlocking Monk which is more specified version tweaked for end-game and party setup.

There is no scout/thief type class in the game at the moment, however the director said in an interview awhile ago that this is something that will be coming. So I can only imagine they'll introduce Scout as a class and then the advanced version will be something like Ninja (aka FFXI.) Samurai is also likely to come at some point.

FFXIV is different in that it allows you to use certain abilities from other classes you have levelled. So for example a common cross-class ability to use as a melee, lets say Lancer, would be Second Wind which is a Pugilist level 6 ability that restores HP on a timer. Or you can even use abilities like Cure from Conjurer or Protect. As you get higher in level you get more slots to use cross-class abilities.

So I wouldn't worry about choosing class because you're going to be levelling multiple classes anyway to use their cross-class abilities and because having classes at certain levels is needed in order to unlock jobs. If you want to be a tank I'd recommend Gladiator (Paladin.) Marauder (Warrior) is also a tank but is much more DPS based and has more crowd control.

If you're into MMO's then it is one of the best available and with it's large player base and SE's commitment, it's going to keep growing and improving. It doesn't try to do anything new, it's just polished parts of other MMO's put into a Final Fantasy setting.

The PC version is obviously the best, but apparently the PS4 version is quite good too according to some FC mates. Like all MMO's the real fun comes down to playing with other people. If you intend to solo through the whole thing and don't go out of your way to try and build a close-knit playing group then you're missing out.

For the price it's worth a shot. I played since the very first beta back when the game was a disgrace (version 1.0) and have only just come back from taking over a year out, so I've been playing catch up since. Sadly I haven't got as much time as I would like to play anymore.

Yeah it's a "unlock a skill/trait every x levels" system, which is quite nice, however you do get a Attribute point every 2 levels which you can allocate how you choose.

The class system is as open as it gets, you pick a starting race and class but you can go and take up a new class from their respective bases almost straight away, this is limited slightly as they are spread between the 3 major hubs and you cant travel between them immediately with ease.

Each class uses a distinct weapon type, all you need to do to change class is change your weapon and you can level every class to 50 on one character.

Classes are further broken down by Jobs, which are combinations of 2 classes, you get the quest at level 30 on your "main class" and level 15 in a "secondary class", for instance Gladiators can become Paladins at Gladiator lv30 and Conjurer lv15.

Then there is also the ability to use a few abilities from other classes you have levelled, for main classes you can use every other class (I think) but jobs are limited to a select few other classes.

It is a really good system, the only issue is leveling additional classes is a bit dull as quests are one time per character so you are limited to other means of leveling which feel rather grindy.

Anyway, I normally play a fast hitting, dagger wielding high burst DPS character. Or a tank.

For tank you have a choice of Marauder (Warrior) or Gladiator (Paladin), overall the Paladin is better for high level content due to their cooldowns and mitigation being better, however Warriors can do nearly everything fine though healers sometimes whinge because they can't adapt their healing style. Warriors are far better at AoE tanking and generally I consider better before lv50 as Paladins don't get many of their really good abilities till quite high level, however Paladins can do just fine you just have to pay more attention to threat.

For DPS, your choice is basically Pugilist (Monk) or Lancer (Dragoon), former uses fist weapons and the latter uses a spear. Both very cool though I prefer Dragoon because of their Jump abilities looking badass.

Gladiator is Sword n Board. Pretty standard 'tank' set-up really.

As I said, there isn't a dual wield class in the sense you're thinking of just yet. The closest to that style I would think is Pugilist which is a fast attacking quasi martial artist.

How it'll work is you pick your starting class when you create your character and you are locked into that class for the first portion of the game just to introduce you to things. Once you get to a certain point in the main story and your class specific quests (you get a new one every 5 levels) you can freely travel between the 3 cities and join as many of the other Guilds as you want. Think this is at around level 15. At this point the class you picked to start with no longer matters and you can try out and progress with any you want.

So don't agonise over your first class. Just pick whichever one you think sounds interesting and try out some others once you get to that point.
