Maybe he's just verbose.

If the content is succinct, accurate and well presented and there is just a lot of data and information then I don't see the harm in it.

If though, as the consensus seems to be, that he has waffled on excessively then yes I'd agree it is probably a waste of time.

44,000 words? Seriously?! Why?

.... because it's a computing related degree, not a Business degree.

Us computer nerds have no comprehension of producing a succinct piece of work :p

No, in all seriousness.. as I said previously my computing final year project currently total's approximately 50k words, unedited. My report will be 18 - 20k as a final piece, with a hefty appendix for diagrams, code, testing and such.

Some people commenting obviously have no idea what a full technology project encompassing all aspects of the systems lifecycle actually entails...hell my test plan for my solution is nearly 5k alone (and that's in tabular format)

can't remember how long my dissertation was. think it's still at uni. don't think i bothered going collecting it after i graduated.

Thats one of the sadest aspect of it for me, I still have a copy of mine somewhere but even when I worte it I never read it and now probably never will. I'm just glad I did the minimum got a good grade and didn't make any silly sacrifices to write a huge volume that nobody will ever really read.

My Degree is in computer Studies, a 5k tabular test plan is almost certainly unrealistic and unnecessary, I'm betting you've not written an office 2007 replacment.

The problem is the wordcount has become some sort of assesment of worth among students I'm sure if weight had become the meassure by which we compare some people would have started using extra thick paper and leather bindings just to get a few extra grams for the pub discussion where you decided who had worked hardest. Notice very very few people will ever say my dissertation was well under the word count but the content was great, it's just not the done thing.

So it is that time again, when final year projects are due in, I have just printed mine off and cost me nearly £45.00 quid to print and bind, dam university prices . Would have been cheaper if I bought my own printer, anyway here is mine.

What’s your project title: Password Authentication featuring Biometrics
Pages: 296
Word Count: 44552
How did it go? Printed early, hoping for a first but dependent how well my coded proto-type holds up in presentation
.

That is insane. Mine is due in 2 months and I am not allowed to submit more than 70 pages of A4, including diagrams, graphs etc. The Appendix is a further 50 pages MAX.

Unfourtunatly for me, my application is being deployed in a real enviroment after graudation, hence the rather over-enthusiastic testing. Although I was also wagering upon the fact that since i've covered every part of the requirements for the disseration in great detail my chances of getting a good mark are a bit greater.

Don't know where Office 2007 comes in to it

I work in a real environment and your software must be very substantial too warrant a 5k tabulated test plan, thats where office 2007 comes into it. Full respect if you have written an enterprise level piece of software that will be mission critical used by hundreds and has thousands of different interlinked functions, but I would be surprised.

Ugh, I know someone who does this in every letter he writes, 90% of what he writes is completely superfluous and he knocks anything that isn't filled with waffle.

Gets on my nerves that boy does

front page gives a great impression.

Thats how they are generally suppose to be, and mine was almost exactly the same for a formal report.

However 40k+ word count is insane, I handed mine in couple of weeks ago and im doing Computer Science, mine reached around 18-20k mark, and that i felt was almost to much.

Doing a masters in biometrics at the moment, dont have to start my project untill I finish my exams this week, but my project is going to be on 'Levels of Assurance in Authentication', basically how sure can you be that someone is who they say they are, the answer for most systems is no with a side order of no.

edit : Also not in Latex, booo

IF it makes anyone feel better our Dissertations for Architecture last year had a Word Count Limit of 8000 :P I do indeed laugh at all the extensive writings elsewhere in Uni courses :D

What size font did you use?

Makes me glad I didn't go to uni.

12 Arial

He may well have included a lot of coding, and diagrams if his disseration is on biometrics, software and so on.

My dissertation wasn't 44k words long, but was over 100 pages thick owing to the mathematics, coding, diagrams that I had to include.

As Freefaller says really, includes a lot of coding, and diagrams there are several thousand lines of code i had to include in the appendices, but there is a lot of textual content aswell which was required.

As it is a double module and worth 40 credits in the final year, and there is no timetable for it, time is used on the project.

So do you choose your own subject matter for these things or are they given to you?

As for picking a topic we was given a load at the start of the year, i did not like any of them, so i made my own. my own direction etc, but some people have found this hard and become stuck, as they cannot get much help of their supervisor.
