Finally, we're getting FTTP, woo-hoo! (it was installed in June 2024)

My ONT port and Toob router is 2.5gbps

With the Toob router I'm seeing 1.1 to 1.3gbps (router out only test, no device) and on my PC 950mbps, my phone 1050mbps.

With my Asus, I can't do a router only test, but on my PC only 750mbps, oddly mynphone only 500mbps, but the Asus WiFi is 5400mbps.

I think ill go back to the Toob

Dunno, just what their site says.

  • New-generation WiFi 6 - Enjoy ultrafast speeds up to 5400 Mbps with the latest WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and 160MHz channels

They've added their 5GHz Wi-Fi 6 4x4 maximum PHY rate (4804Mbps) to their 2x2 2.4GHz maximum PHY rate (574Mbps) and then rounded up to the nearest 100. No Wi-Fi clients can connect to both bands at the same time and use them. It's as accurate as having a pack of three mesh nodes and adding together all the potential radio speeds of all the nodes in the box and quoting that on your marketing. While you're doing it why not add together all the wired ports as well - has each node got two 2.5Gbps ports? 15Gbps wired network support, there we go, I can market as well.

I've had FTTC (upper 50's Mb/low 60's Mb on speedtest) for about 10 years now and have just ordered FTTP 500Mb as it's just been installed on my road.
They will be installing it in another week at my house but just wondering a few things...

I assume they remove the redundant copper cable drop line? (mine is from a telegraph pole on the road at the front of the house).

I should actually get 500Mb and not say 400/450Mb? (at least with a wired ethernet connection, although I have an Asus RT-AC68U that is reporting 500-650Mb using my iphone 15 pro with Wi-Fi sweetspots app to test wifi speeds so it shouldn't be a limiting factor depending on location in the house).
Well FTTP didnt get installed. Sub contract guy turned up and basically a big tree in the next door but one neighbours garden has some branches (the end of the branches!) that my drop line runs through and the pole itself has branches close by so he said he couldnt do it and they'll have to be cut back. No idea who pays for it as next door but one died 6 months ago and his house is sold, still going through AFAIK.
Also its on the road side and next to a bus stop so he can't use a cherry picker to do it even, needs the bus stop closing and the road coning or lights maybe to get the branches cut.

FFS nothing straight forward, god knows how long it will take but at least i'm got 55-60mbit on FTTC which works fine.

I am hopeful that our 500 FTTP connection goes ahead this Friday. It was scheduled to get connected by OR, on behalf of PN, a couple of weeks back. But the cessation order on our house phones got "stuck" and it all had to be ordered again.

When the OR engineer arrives to do the job, do they take back the OR modem that had been used since around 2014 with our FTTC connection.?

If so, I'll need to find the original, I bought a Huawei branded one from Ebay and installed a custom firmware on it.

No they don't
Was also using a 12 year old BT modem lol
With fttp you no longer require a modem
The ont replaces it
You just need a router
Router connects by ethernet to ont no modem

Thanks. Not that'll ever have the option to go back to FTTC, if they remove the copper cable. But I would prefer to keep the custom modem over their supplied one.

Posted this in the VM thread but also putting it here for opinions on this install...

Had the external installation done yesterday by Kelly Communications and they've left the cable like this. Surely this isn't normal? It's going to prevent us from cutting the grass in this area.
They were actually back today for a neighbours install (different workers) and they agreed it could have been done better so have contacted their regional manager to see if they need to come and review it.

I had a paved driveway, with stones around the outside. I ran a length of water hose around the perimeter for the VM guys to use. When they arrived they were happy they didn't have to do anything, other than pull it though (with my draw wire I'd provided.) later confessing that they'd have just layed it on top of the stones.

Is it bad, yes. Is it anything outside of what I've seen at various other houses - no. I'd be amazed if they do anything more than what you've already got.

Kelly are on piece work, any promise to pass it back up the chain will be a lie to get you to go away.

If you want it resolved then cancel your contract with VM within the cooling off period and that might get someone to send a new team out.

I actually contacted Virgin as well anyway and they've informed me there is already a survey of the work booked in for tomorrow so we will see what happens with that.

Our area wasn't even in the build 2026 plans until earlier this year now it's by 2026 fiber pulling works going on in the main roads, about time the vdsl2 was 15.5/0.6mb so we are currently with virgin.

Our area got sorted a couple of weeks ago. Signed up, engineer came round but said he needs to dig a hole as the duct is blocked. Expected him to go get some tools and crack on but no....he has to leave it to "civils" to sort, four days later and sky won't even give me a fresh install date now going on about planning issues and all sorts (to go about half a meter on my own land! I told the bloke Im happy for him to do it there and then). The duct box is so close to the house he could have just drilled a hole next to it and shoved the cable through. Beyond annoyed at this point.

I sure hope so, at the moment nobody is quite sure what the charges will be and if they will exceed the amount the provider I've subscribed with will pay them. It's a bit infuriating considering everyone on our side of the street will have the same issue

We do have a copper line but its not been active since we moved in. From what I can see its an armoured cable or duct into the street but the BT wholesale site has marked it as a direct in ground cable.

Ironically the option to buy ADSL and FTTC has now been removed from most providers for our street
Almost one month later and we have had the following:
  • Openreach came out again to see what had (Or rather hadn't been done) and marked a potential route and areas for the toby boxes outside peoples houses
  • Our escalation contact then let us know that they would get the work approved
  • A few weeks later it came up on bidb.uk that we were getting 70m of ducting in the street
  • Openreach came out last Tuesday to replace the 23 joint box and spent the week installing ducting and toby boxes
  • Today they finished up, installed some microducting from mine and the neighbors toby box into my garden ducting and pulled it to the wall
Now I have another install date for next Friday when (Fingers crossed) this will all be done and dusted :D

Been at our new house for just over a month and fastest speed we have is 27mbps, when we moved I thought we would be stuck with that forever.
Oh was I wrong, got email on Thursday from Openreach saying Full Fibre is available !!! Upgraded my BT account to EE as they were promoting it, only extra £8 pm to go to 1gb speed.
Also going to change Mrs and mine phone contracts to EE, £13 pm for unlimited data.

Great deals all round!!

I can't find much info online around connecting an ONT to my own router. Is it generally plug and play, or will I need to grab settings, username/passwords from the ISP supplied one first? (Brsk 1000 being installed on Friday).

If you were previously using your own router
And you're getting fttp from
The same company
Then should be plug and play

If you're switching isp
Or weren't previously using your own router
Then yes will need to know details
