[ Folding ] We only need 13,000ppd more to start catching ABXzone

@Happy (among other)

Been having a few issues with 3d/2d clocks with my 260 - like many others - so thought I'd share me findings.

Was running the 190.62 drivers without problem while working (AutoCAD) in fact there were really good as I'd needed to stop 353pts wu's with my 8800gs.
As cad became to slow - used the 182.08 drivers as the later ones were very poor in CAD.
Anyway the 190.62 and 260 was much better (not perfect but workable)
190.82 also gives a few % gain in ppd over the 185 drivers - 8714ppd vs. 8472

Went home with just Fah running in a window and the pc hibernated :(
Following day I turn off hibernation and gpu went to 2d clocks all weekend :(
Over the next days tried the 182 / 185.85 cuda2.2 & newest 191.07 drivers all with 2d clock or autocad issues.

Anyway went with a different approach yesterday- XP's power setting menu
set to always on and screensave at 9999minutes and left autocad running (monitor off)
Result 3d clocks for 40 hours and counting back with the faster (and cad happy 190.62 drivers)
Screen saver back to normal now and having no effect on Fah :)
Will try leaving a different programe on tonight (if I remember)

Also the windowed client is faster that the service (but I guess most of you know that)

260 is running at 555/1512/1053
Core 62c case 52c 40% fan - 1888pts - 3mn 34s = 7622.58 ppd
Core 75c case 61c 43% fan - 787pts - 1mn 19s = 8607.19 ppd
Core 77c case 62c 44% fan - 353pts - 35s = 8714.06 ppd

OK.... I've tried reading a few FAQs and this seems a little like hardwork to get going so can someone tell me if it's worth me trying to help?

I have:

Main machine - Q9560 @ 4Ghz, 8GB Ram, ATI 5850 1Gb
Server - Q8400 @ 3.2Ghz, 8GB Ram, Nvidia 6200 (I think)
Studio - Q6600 @ Stock, 4Gb Ram, onboard graphics.

Are any of these worthwhile running, or is heavy weight GPU action the order of the day?

all the quads will run the windows smp client - it's set and forget.
you will get more ppd with other more involved applications.
But wait a week before the addicition kicks in and you sell the studio pc for a good few GTX260

I'm using the 186.18 drivers and they are fine, though without the enhanced Cuda 2.3 support or whatever the newer 190.X are touting. It may be worth giving these a whirl since this is what several people on here use for Nvidia GPU folding (me, MI, Vertica etc). I prefer the tray version so I can use the pause function. But it seems use have found a way to get it to work with best of both worlds Cuda 2.3 and good AutoCAD drivers :)

As above all well worth running on. One Virtual machine on each (bar the Q8400, since no VT support) will generate around 6K plus about 2K for the windows SMP client on the Q8400. So definitely worth it!

My Q6600 does not seem to be performing as expected......

How many SMP Clients should I run on it at once?

I have no idea what I'm doing with f@h so I need all the help I can get.

Seems a lot of work......as I won't be sticking with f@h.

Currently,

FahMon is saying my 3 x GTX260's will average about 24k PPD and my Q6600 running 4 smp clients will average 1.8k PPD.

There was no improvement running 1,2,3 or 4 smp clients.

@Bob, that's about right for the windows smp client on a q6600. Linux is much better for folding, hence running linux in virtual machines or just running it natively. 24k ppd is a lot though, it's considerably more than I'm putting out. Perhaps cards folding, cpu doing something else?

Argh now virtualbox keeps freezing on me :(

I've emailed VMware to try to get a activation code to try that, I've seen in other forums it's happened before with their activation email system not sending emails. PITA!

Just downloading ubuntu now ready for when i make a start on getting some extra large units to fold and virtualbox too, didn't like vmware as much might just be me though.

I have been having issues with Virtual box keeps freezing on me like dekez, VMware has been fine though. Although when it works I prefer VB :)

MI - Are you going to be running the 50K CPU WUs? :D **Imagines** another 50K spike every two days on EOC!

If i can set up my rig to run the 50k units ill run em *fingers crossed* but just waiting to install my new GTX then ill be ready hopefully by the weekend when i have more time :D

Well I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one, thought I was making another noob error somewhere along the line! VB does seem really good though pity.

Nice! I think those 50K units are the reason many teams are ahead of us in PPD *jealous* :)

I wonder what the issue is. I've never persuaded virtual box to crash, though I've had it kill the host system by cunning means of allocating the machine 2gb and then running it with 5gb in use on the host. it ran fine until suddenly it all went terribly wrong. Reminds me to get another 6gb though.

@MI, you'll be laughing at how easy it is to set up. Sort of.

You set up fah6 as normal, just running ./fah6 -configonly will do. Then swap out the executable with the one in the link Happy is posting every couple of days. Then you have to run it using a passkey, and you have to run it as ./fah6 -smp8 until it's finished 10 normal units, at least 80% within the time limit. It's something well over a week though and an i7 goes through them at a rate of about six a day.

Then finally you can run it as ./fah6 -smp 8 -bidadv, and laugh as suddenly 2/3 of your ram is in use. I've got a thread on here somewhere which features me gradually finding these things out. It takes a good 50 minutes to upload the results as well.

Alternate version of the executable is here, statically linked, MD5 sum 29d2ee580f6f79ac996ad29f22554ec0
Useful information + that link here

There must be more than two people with i7's willing to fold on this forum, but two is a good start.

Pretty sure ChrissyT has an i7, but he was moving house and hasn't posted in here for a while :(
