Football 12-14th Feb 2011 WHICH IS VALENTINE'S DAY ****SPOILERS****

LIkewise its worth pointing out, the difference between an inside right striker, and a right midfielder, is where Andy Gray sticks his finger on his stupid display. He plays on the right wing, he always came back for corners, he plays the exact position Nani plays now, when the going is good for Utd, they tend to play 4-3-3 as they did with Utd, with Nani and Giggs today dropping deeper when under pressure.

Inside right, and right wing, the difference is largely semantics and Ronaldo was excellent for many seasons before his 42 goal season.

.

I'm going to dissagree, because you are wrong.
When Ronaldo was played wide right he was getting far more stick than Nani ever has done.
When he was moved further forward and played in a three, or given a free role to do what he liked, he shone.

Thats nothing to do with opinion, its what was actually happening.

That really bugs me also about people calling Nani selfish, I've actually lost count of how many of Nani's goals this season has been coming in from the left ignoring his team mates and hitting it with his left foot. When someone has got the ability to score goals as consistently as Nani he's quite entitled to do it 3/4 times in a game if the openings arise

He is sometimes though, i mean how many shots did he personally have that went over the bar in this match?

More than anyone else in the game i would have said, including rooney, berbatov and tevez combined. (at a guess)

The fact that they all went over did not help. IF he was getting them on the keeper with power then its fair enough IMO. Yes he can score goals from outside he has proven this, however

He is immensely skillful and very quick, the number of times he did his man with a simple stop then go down the right wing in the fist half was enjoyable to see...

then he's whip in a great ball to a lone striker - who was smaller thasn both centre halfs with giggs not stayng at the far post..

He's now scored or assisted 20 goals in his last 20 games. Not a bad tally.

and how many shots on goal has he had (and a good proportion not going anywhere near the goal)

IF he was hitting the target - or there werent players better placed to shoot then I wouldnt mind so much

He undoubtedly did well for the goal - no question at all - but it was Rooney getting it out of the air and especially Giggs pass that made the goal really

Smalling was fantastic, Rio v2.

I ***** well hope NOT - We need Smalling to play regularly not to sit on the bench injured all the time!!! (admittedly Rio has been better this season than last, but even so)

Vidic and Smalling were absolutely immense - cant believe how impressive Smalling has been all season when he got the chances (I dont count him playing alongside Evans, was always going to end in disaster)

Frank sorry but you're being ridiculous. You're acting like all Nani did was tap it in, not make an awesome run inside the full back, bring the ball down from chest height with one touch into his path and then execute a very cool finish.

Nani is a better conventional winger than Ronnie ever was (Although Ronaldo is a much better player who I love ;) ) he has one of the best crosses I have seen since Beckham and he can use both feet.

I have no problem with him shooting but I do hate him rolling around like he has been nuked, although in the last few games this has been less frequent.

Him one one flank and Bale on the other would be a sight. However the telegraph is reporting we will go in for Young this summer.

Smalling was great to, I never want to see Evans again. Same as Gibson.

It was a very good goal - but I still think the two touches that fed him were what made the goal more than anything Nani himself did

I thought the cross for Rooney was more impressive than what he did for his own goal

edit more rumours this morning about Bale and Young in the summer - Bale would be an immense signing......but cost prohibitive (if Spurs would sell anyway). Young is slightly more attainable but Im not so sure if he would be consistantly good.

Young rumour is in the Telegraph and apparently we enquired in January. Fergie did mention he tried to go for one player.

The Bale rumour is in the mirror so has just been made up I bet, plus can anyone really see us paying £40 million?!?!

Don't need another flipping winger :( We need to get a midfielder that can play through the centre, to give us a second option other then go out wide. We would not have scored yesterday were it not for a slightly deflected cross and Rooney's magic, Rooney is never going to beat two defenders like Kompany and Lescott in the air.

We do need another winger.

Nani/Valencia are both class, Giggs can not go on much longer and Park well let's be honest he does a job.

We do need someone who can play left wing.

HOWEVER, I agree that the main priority is to buy a CM and a GK. God knows which CM we can buy though.

Just watched the Rooney goal on SSN....stunning strike, didnt think the Shrek could score a gorgeous goal like that:p...good result for Utd, putting City in their place lol.

Not such a good result for Arsenal as we are 3 pts behind still....we played pretty damn well against the Wolves...RVPPPPPPPPP is back to being one of the best strikers in the EPL...10 goals in his last 7 games:eek:...what an awesome return for him....hopefully he can stay fit for the rest of the season as we definitely need his goal scoring as we cant rely on Chamakh, Bender, Arshavin and Walcott:p.

Hopefully this week we can be done with the CL as i dont see us beating Barca, although a minor but impossible miracle could happen ie we could beat them with a stunning amount of luck:p....but seriously id rather us concentrate on the EPL and try and win that as its been a stupidly long time since we won it.

Hahaha :D After watching MoTD and both WBA and WH's defending was shockingly bad! I was thinking after seeing the score it might have just been great attacking plan... turns out it was just down to **** defending! :D

Surely Bebe needs to start getting chances though? If not he was a waste of a buy, same with Obertan.

From memory, when Bebe is mentioned to SAF he always says he will be a striker. When discussing buying strikers in he always says he didn't need to because he has a long list, including Bebe & Obertan.

I'm not sure he see's him as an out and out winger.

Hmm possibly, but Obertan definitely isn't a striker. I'd like us to buy a top left winger when Giggs retires but first priority has to be a creative attacking central midfielder. When you look at other teams that have the likes of Fabregas, Silva, Van De Vaart, Lampard, Gerrard....we've had no-one to play that role since Scholes started playing much deeper.

Much as I love RVP, keep in mind those goals have come against, Birmingham, West Brom, West Ham, Wigan, Wolves and Newcastle. Now if Barcelona get renamed to Warcelona I think we'd have a real chance but in reality RVP came back at the perfect time to get some form. Theres nothing wrong with scoring more against weaker teams but all but 2 of his goals came against 4 teams up to their neck in a relegation fight.

Had Chamakh/bendtner/anyone else started against those guys they'd have had a significantly improved strike rate because, thats the way it goes quite honestly. The good news is if theres any run of teams and a decent run of form for a striker to want to take into that Barca game, thats it. But RVP tends to look completely stranded in this formation against "proper" teams and gets very little support. Look what happened in the second half against Newcastle, without support and with them attacking hard we had none of the ball and RVP couldn't maintain ANY posession at all.

Assuming Barca don't have their one shockingly bad game a season that almost everyone has, we'd do far better with a striker who can win the ball when entirely stranded.

Shocking defending yes, can't say I'm sure how many first team defenders were playing for West Brom, it seems that it was most of them. West Ham's first team would be Illunga, Upson, Thompkins, Faubert/Spector probably, on form at least. THey played, Bridge, Reid, Da Costa, Jacobsen yesterday, a thoroughly 3rd string defence.

To be fair on bridge, he actually improved a lot after a tough start to Arsenal, any player needs SOME form and match fitness, Da Costa is just back off an injury, Reid is rubbish, Jacobsen is rubbish, those two aren't good enough for backup at a League 1 team, West Ham need a serious clear out.

It's Valencia or Nani really. Doubt Valencia can play left wing and there is no way we should be switching Nani with the way he is playing out right.

Valencia isnt half as talented or skillful as nani. he is more of a work-a-day player with some strength, some pace and enough skill to get him by...

We should be looking at the likes of, Alexis Sanchez from Italy.

And yes we do need some central midfielders, scholes cant go on forever and as ive said numerous times, the rest are too weak and just dont stack up compared to say, Essien, Morailes, lampard, gerrard etc... Scholes is old and cant do what he once could as consistently.

From memory, when Bebe is mentioned to SAF he always says he will be a striker. When discussing buying strikers in he always says he didn't need to because he has a long list, including Bebe & Obertan.

Have you seen Bebe cross a ball?! ahaha its like someones whispering into hi ear, ' just kick it as hard as you possibly can, anyweher, across the face of goal'. The crosses i have seen out of him have been truly awful. He is quick, strong, thinks he has some skills. Will he turn out to be the waste of 8 million? Compared to say, the same investment into VdV who was proven, as opposed to Bebe who was totally unproven, i suspect so.

The best thing we could do with bebe is send him out on loan to a wigan or someone so he can get some game time in top flight football, rather than keeping him benchwarming now that we are out of the carling cup?
