Football and the Coronavirus

Interesting developments in the NFL with regards to how they're dealing with omicron. They've decided to only test unvaccinated players and players who are showing symptoms.

I guess until we know more about omicron it's too soon to say whether this strategy is safe or irresponsible but if it is safe, it would make keeping sports leagues running a hell of a lot easier.

Totally sensible idea. We won’t do it though because of our limp wristed super scared approach to covid.

We need to start the Bundesliga approach. If you're not at least double vaccinated then you don't play. If you don't play you don't get paid and can't train with the team either. I believe many players initially against the vaccines got their jabs once this was brought in.

This would 100% work because ultimately the people not getting vaccinated are largely selfish idiots who only think of themselves. When something like being able to go to the pub or eating out is what “forces” people to get a vaccine they weren’t going to get, you know exactly what sort of ***** they are.

If this was in response to my post re the NFL then that's a slightly separate issue. As we've seen, being double vaccinated isn't stopping players testing positive for omicron and it's the positive tests that are causing all the cancellations.

The NFL's approach is to avoid positive tests by not testing fully vaccinated players. It's an interesting approach. On one hand you're increasing the likelihood of spreading the virus through your squad but on the other hand, the PL have shown how difficult that is to prevent even with testing.

Premier League Shareholders are having a meeting at 1PM to discuss the impact of COVID on football. I'm guessing as it's the shareholders it'll be a meeting about how many deaths would be considered acceptable before stopping football for a week or two.

The problem is that people who don't get vaccinated by and large don't take COVID seriously and are the most likely people to bend of break rules and generally not give a crap. That leads to COVID spreading far faster than if people even gave a single **** about anyone but themselves.

This is such an unfair comment. The PL are not qualified to make decisions on public health, whether that be players or supporters. That is the job of government and the PL have to work around the parameters set by them.

The PL have actually been far more conservative in their approach than they're required. As I mentioned earlier, I'm all but certain that the PL aren't legally required to test their players. They could have just ploughed through this period, not testing players and not having all these cancellations.

What is reportedly going to be discussed is the cancellation of the fixtures the midweek after the boxing day round. You'd hope that common sense prevails and that round of fixtures is cancelled because even with full squads, playing every 3 days is bordering on irresponsible but with squads hit due to covid, it's simply crazy.

I can’t see how cancelling one round of midweek fixtures would make an iota of difference in the surge we have at the moment.

Reduce capacity would be better. Football without fans is utterly pointless

Not sure its pointless but its much worse for sure.

Knocking stadiums down to 20% would probably be a good shout. Ban people who are not double vaccinated.

From what I understand, they're not thinking of cancelling the round of fixtures to counter infections. They seem to be accepting that players are going to get infected and there's nothing they can do to stop that. The idea behind cancelling that round of fixtures is to make it more manageable for clubs to cope with smaller numbers of players available to them.

For example if you've got a situation where a club is down to 15 or so senior players, it's very difficult to expect them to play Sunday/Monday-Tuesday/Wednesday-Saturday/Sunday, especially if they've just played 3 games in the previous 6-8 days too.

It's nigh on impossible to police that though. Heck, Liverpool introduced a new contactless ticketing system this season and it caused huge problems with massive queues for the first few games. Imagine having to check every fans covid passport, it would take hours.
