Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I will add some positivity also

Having moved to a new job in July, I have found that is was not what we discussed in the interview and I have become stagnant in development for the last 6 months. After highlighting this to the manager, who didn't care, I begun to look elsewhere.

After showing interests in jobs advertised on the usual job boards, I finally came across a role at a rather large UK based bank. Applied directly, after hearing nothing for 3-4 weeks, got a phone call offering an interview.

Went to the interview, went well and 1 week later I got offered the job at said bank. Handed in my notice here and I start in the New Year :)

Of course, my background will differ to some as I do have good experience and good education. Though that said, even with the financial climate, banks are still recruiting, some more then others. More importantly, they are looking to expand even through this doom and gloom :)

I'm in pretty much exactly the same position really, a bit luckier in that i'm in the senior tech role but still with a child etc it's not enough money to live on properly.

Albeit my problems are partially self inflicted due to a very poor choice in the past, stuck with a mortgage on a flat that i can't get rid of and can't live in because the space is too small for 3 people :( Forced to let it out and lose money on it every month.

your not wrong about the pay, local schools here advertise IT staff at approx 15k for the same job I do now at NHS for £18! madness!
not sure I'd take a 3k paycut to do more hours.........
infact looking closer it's even MORE work than my current and covers a wider range of subjects! also it's pro rata and only 43 weeks a year!

I started on £14.5k in july 2006, currently on around 17.5k but that's only having had a job re-evaluation and put up to "senior technician" status.

For what i'm capable of doing and the sheer complexity of our network i feel like i'm worth more like £22-24k now.....pitty wages don't work out based on what we feel we're worth :(

Been in new job a month now and mixed feelings.

Home/Work balance is excellent, can work from home a lot and am not required to be away apart from on very rare occasions so get to spend every night back at home (previously I was away 4 nights a week and wasn't a fan).

But feeling a bit meh about the job itself at the moment. Putting it down to being new still, but part of me is wishing I had followed up the other option maybe. But then that would mean being back out during the week, although not as much.

So a bit stuck really :(

well heres a interesting one, for those who are using the jobcenters make sure you applyfor jobs off there system and log the numbers and MAKE your advisor log them down.

last week when i signed on the dippy bint said she was worried as id only applied for 5 jobs over 6 months, so i asked her how she knows this and she says well thats all thats on our system, "we cant log anything without a jobcenter ref number though" ?!

so i sat down a couple of days ago did a search for ALL local jobs within a 20 mile radius and came back with 2 i could actually apply for, one of them which is a repost last week from a month ago which iv already applied for, and they expect me now to apply to 2 per week as iv been out of work 6 months.

It's partly just that, but it's also down to the type of work being different, but will see how it goes.

Luckily I think the other door is still ajar for me, originally they couldn't offer any more progress until the new year anyway, so can always see if they are wanting to make a firm offer in a few months.

What do you do though, job you would like more but that really affects the home life, or an easy job that could be boring, but you get your personal/home life back.

Company I'm at is massive so probably plenty of opportunities in future, and the money isn't exactly terrible ;)

Just apply to any job you want, and write it down in their stupid book thing, they can't moan about you not applying for jobs on 'their' system.

I personally like to have some evening free, although to be fair I could probably easily work away during the week now as I go to the gym three night in the week :)

yes they can, thats what she was doing.

iv gone through a few of these sodding books and she says they need the ref number. like i said there idiots who do exactly what there told to, rather than think a little bit.

It's balls mate, unless the rules have suddenly changed.

As long as you have been actively applying for jobs, they can't deny you your allowance

Otherwise talk to someone higher up

as long as men are making babies, new jobs will apear, because MEN love sex right?, MEN are the ones driving the encomey forward arn't they?.

I think it depends what 'scheme' you're on. If when you go in the print out some jobs to apply for, you have to whether you like it or not. I was lucky in that I said I'd do my own hunting and just included contact details of any jobs I applied for. My centre were always running late though and as long as I showed I was hunting they shipped me off within 30 seconds.

Im doing computer science at about 18 hours a week, plus 10-15 hours a week lab work on top (2nd year) and i shud be hearing back from my 3rd stage of the apple hiring process soon but theyve put up their minimum part time hours to 20/week

now its a job i really want, but would you say im overworking myself?

I wouldn't say you'd be overworking yourself, although you'd have less of a social life. Just make sure you put university first.

I got some feedback on the app I mentioned earlier:

Hi

Your application form was very good and you were potentially suited to the role however there was an exceptionally large number of applications for this post.

You only just missed shortlisting for interview, the candidates that scored higher had more experience in print, web and 3D design as well as photography experience.

Regards

At least I know my application was sound and I only missed out due to less experience in the 2 mentioned areas!

12 hours over 3 grueling interviews and all they have to say is a generic decline email

urgh, companys are a joke
