Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Is it worth travelling to interviews with a recruitment consultant or do I say I only want to interview with the actual company if I'm going to drive an hour away?

As in agency people like Matchtech? I don't see the point in having interviews with them.

I went to one once (not with Matchtech, it was another one) and I felt it was a waste of time, they don't ask or give anything that can't be done over the phone or via email.

I also find them to be quite unreliable, on occasions I've been given the wrong address for interview or had delayed emails and only had apologies once I brought it to attention. I've also spotted spelling errors and technical inaccuracies in the jobs they advertise on behalf of an employer.

Go through them by all means because many employers use these recruitment firms and will not deal with you directly for vacancy information.

I hate it when they go "oh, you need to come in and register yourself with us"...

mmm no, you need to forward my CV, and shut the hell up! :p

If you were a company looking for an agency to handle your vacancies, you'd want one who will vet candidates personally (that's one of the things you pay for). It's good practice as well (interview wise) and gives you a chance to build a rapport with an agency if you then keep in regular contact.

But yeah, it is annoying :)

there are some junior technical project managers going at my place in London (SQL core skill)

Trust for full job spec if interested

I'd understand if it was a pre-interview or something

But when they get you in just to fill out a form....

I'd love to work for something like that, sadly I'm not an engineer, could easily change to do something like that mind :p

Been in a job only 5 months and just got another job offer for 10% more salary in a nicer location. Thing is I quite like my job while the work in the new job doesn't excite me at all, but I need the pay rise as I can't pay the bills atm. Also can't see myself settling in this area without a long commute whereas the other job is in a much better place to live.

Not sure whether to explain this to my boss and see if they will raise my salary or just jump ship on the basis of money and location. Instinct is telling me to stick where I am but then my instinct told me to move to High Wycombe which hasn't been a good move at all tbh.

I am in a job but went to the most grueling interview of my life today.

One hour of exams followed by a 90 minute interview by FOUR people. My CV got taken to pieces bit by bit. I got taken to pieces. My answers got taken to pieces. Answers to my answers got taken to pieces. I even had to do a 5 minute presentation at the start about why they should hire me.

It was like being on The Apprentice and at one point I remember biting my lip and then tasting blood for the next 5!

How do I feel it went? Ok. I hope. :(

In the same situation as me really with regards to salary.

Apply to the other job, and perhaps talk to your boss, say you are struggling with money etc etc, see what happens.

Well...taken the plunge, uploaded my new CV to some sites...not looking forward to getting time off work for interviews........

How do people go about this usually? :)

This is exactly it. I told my parents i didn't want to be on benefits, but they've insisted that they've put enough into the "system" over the past 40 years and that i should go on it until i find a job.

I almost would rather tell people i was unemployed rather than on the dole :(

I did this before i got my current job i refused to go on benefits etc as i didn't want to kept applying for jobs one of the first interview i got was for a telecomms company. they asked if i had been signing on when i said no and explained that i didn't need to so saw no reason in doing it they looked at me like i was stupid and then said as I hadn't signed on they couldn't tell what i'd been doing for the last 6 months!

Needless to say i didn't get the job, went to work for an agency that provided services for said company needless to say we were moved across to after about 12 months was so tempted to go find the HR lacky from the interview!

You should have been given the job there and then, plus some sort of award for turning down ~£1.5k:p
