Forgot how bad job searching was :(

These types of jobs are the way to get out of helpdesk work though :)

As said, my first job was as a support analyst in a desktop support team. With 16 of us in the team and a help desk of 3 of us at a time you only touched it every once in a while. And when you weren't on the desk you were off doing 2nd, 3rd line stuff and a lot of project work.

Gives you the experience to then move on to the back end stuff.

True, i'm just a bit fed up of having no money...im already over drawn this month...May give it a try :)

My first step would definitely be get in a better paid job to start with then. Once there you can work on moving on doing something else, but you'll find doing those sorts of jobs I posted will help no end in trying to get into a field engineer/server based job.

I've effectively gone desktop support > server support (now) > consultant/manager (depending on which job I take) :) That's over an 8 year period.

Cheers buddy :) Altogether I have around 7/8 years experience, sadly the bulk of that was in the first job (6 years) since then its the damn climate thats been against me...I'll get there eventually

It's just a shame, the job I have now is fine, just the money is naff due to me taking the 'lower end' job due to not getting the job I was interviewed for, but I just wanted to get back into the line of work that I was used to....And its only 15 minutes away drive...Ahh well, the other issue is I haven't been there a year yet....

hah I'm the last person who is sympathetic about being effected by the climate and location :p

I am losing my current job due to government spending cuts and live in an area where there really aren't many IT jobs.

For instance, on CWJobs, type in buckinghamshire as a location and you get 202 jobs returned. Type in Devon and you get a whopping 34, and that's more than normal! Hence why I'm either going to be working in Swindon or the South East (which is a bit extreme but where I need to be to do what I want to do).

Just got to keep trying though, and maybe look a little further afield to find what you want.

Aye...That may be true, but over half of those jobs are out of my league due to needing to now certain coding languages or having various courses under your belt ;)

I don't mind travelling as long as the job is right really, no issue at all

its because of the ressicion, companys go bust and people suffer, its an evil circle i am afraid.

recession has been going on since like 2008 now...its getting ridiculous :p

Although on a side note I have had a few calls in the last couple of weeks...I haven't even updated my CV since my previous job to the one I am in now either!

One thing (which might have already been said) is if you're signed up to sites like cwjobs is to regularly re-upload your cv even if nothing has changed.

Recruiters when CV hunting on those sites must see the list in some sort of date it was last uploaded order as whenever I upload a new one I get a flurry of calls the next few days before going quiet again :)

So just re uplaod it once a week or so, put the date or something in the filename then just change this each time.

Aye, this does work :)

Well in a not so amazing few days I've had the company I really wanted to work for say they want me, but can't say when :(

So I can't hang around for that as whilst it could be in July, it could be 6 months, 9 months, and my redundancy kicks in in June.

Was supposed to be seeing a company tomorrow in Bristol, had numerous Skype interviews with their US guys up until now. They cancelled today saying they are restructuring and are putting things off for a month.

So as it stands now I'm definitely off to be a 'senior consultant' at a large financial organisation, working as a pen tester/doing vulnerability stuff.

Fair game though buddy, nice to see you have a few angles...Maybe the company you really want to go for will end up contacting you when you start the other place :p Just up and run really! ;)

I keep getting calls for damn helpdesk jobs...it's so annoying, yet at the same time I should probably be taking them due to the extra increase in wage! :( Stupid CV! I have build, test, deployment, project and helpdesk experience...And they always pick up on the helpdesk stuff :(

I'm still not sure whether or not I should confront my boss about my wage...Just last time we spoke (month or so ago) he said there was no money...So don't know if I should bother or not, as I'm doing no less than the other guy in the office

They were worse than useless for me, but TBH they did recognise they were and left me be.

On another note, grats me on my new job as a Sysadmin.

Nice one buddy :) Hope it works out for you

I'd look at it like this, you're doing ti now for worse money so why not do it for better money whilst you look around for something else? :)

I'd be going for these jobs if they are better paid, depending on the companies and other things it could well help you a lot in getting that next job you want.

I know...Problem I'll probably be working flat out like in the last place, which won't do my head any justice (I'm not moaning about having to work harder, but literally the constant bombardment of the phone being stuck to my ear coupled with my tinnitus which somehow triggers my eyes to go loopy when it gets really bad is enough to send me almost insane!)

:p

EDIT: But I see your point entirely...I would love to be on the same as the SysAdmin here considering I do just as much most of the time :(

Just had my first interview in nearly six years, what a peculiar experience! Got a couple more lined up (oracle developer stuff mostly) - what on earth are you meant to ask when they ask if you have any questions? :p

Anything, stuff about the company, the turn over (depending on the job), whats the work atmosphere like, do they push career progression etc etc :)

I know its a right pain to think of things on the spot believe me :p But try and look up the company before hand if possible and see what things pop up :)

I finally got a job.

Finally! Working in an office with private investors as the IT guy, sort of.

My first day was today and it was magic.

Good news man, well done :)

I've been at my 'new' job for just over a month now, can't quite believe how quickly the time has gone by, but there you go. I think it's a lot like any job, I enjoy it some days, hate it on others. The people I work with are all pretty decent and willing to help as well as being down-to-earth.

The only thing that really lets the job down is the commute. It's probably not far by some people's standards, it's a 50 mile round trip. The only real issue with that is that it's on two buses and it's Stagecoach, hardly the most reliable and on-time bus service in the country. My journey back home has been quite rubbish over the last couple of weeks because the bus that picks me up outside of work has been late quite often and not got me to the end of the route to meet my other bus on time so I've not been getting back through the door until 7:30PM at the earliest.

Won't complain about it too much though as if I hadn't taken this job this post would've been completely different and most likely saying I still hadn't found a job.

See what you mean about the commute...When I had my first job at 17 I wasn't driving you see...So I had to get a 30 min bus into a local town, then either walk for another 20 odd to work or wait for a second bus to take me there! Then on the way home, unless I managed to scrounge a lift or somehow catch a bus up to the main bus station within 15 mins of finishing work, I had to wait nearly two hours for the next one! :p

Get a car basically ;) Or a reliable bus service :p

I'm very happy, after six months on the Future Jobs Fund scheme which has now been erased from existence my employer has stated he wishes to keep me on for twelve months as an apprentice. Quite happy about this, it's not good money but it's my foot in the door.

Junior Software Developer, sadly using VBA and Access but also moving into VB.NET and SQL Server 2005/2008 development too.

Sweet, as long as you can pay the bills buddy I don't see an issue, it will be good experience no? Would love to get an opertunity like that, problem is you cant just walk into those jobs from the street half the time :p

Got myself a job interview with kwik fit today. I know what you're thinking but this is one of the better ones! Plus I need money badly so I'll take what I can. Fingers crossed :p

Jobs a job man! :p Rather than than some bar work or tescos or something

Well done matey

Employment recently finished after 5 years, had to sign on JSA until I can find more work. First sign on is tomorrow, might just wear some shades and a hat to avoid being seen. Feels like I'm off begging for money :( Managed to find a couple of jobs that I've applied for already. One up in town for "CeX" computer exchange place that I really hope I get, and which has proved no end of amusement when my friends/sister asked how's the job hunting going and I tell them I've applied for a Cex job :p

Bit depressing without work and having to claim JSA even if it's only been 10 days, and searching for work just sucks so much, but has to be done - kinda like ironing! :D .... :(

Meh, you're entitled to the money mate if you've been working that long, don't feel guilty, least you have a reason to be asking for it :)

Hope things pan out for you

There was a lot of strange and/or skewed towards the employer stuff in the contract, but the parts that I didn't want were to do with outside business + investment interests.

In short they felt that an employee must be wholly dedicated to the company outside of contracted working hours, I disagreed.

Ugh...I turn down a lot of jobs purely for the fact I don't want to work on a rota...End of really...By all means I'll do overtime occasionally when there is demand, but to tell me I HAVE to work one in every three Saturdays..emmm no :p

Don't think he's talking about a rota, it'll be the standard thing that's in most contracts abotu partaking in work in a similar business to your day job.

I'd have just sucked it up to be honest, as said most IT contracts do have something along those lines in which are larglely there to stop you stealing customers, not to stop you doing your own work out of hours.

Can't help but feel you've been a bit hasty there and it's cost you a job.

Ah...Fair game then...I had to sign something saying I'm not going to do any work relating to the work I already do out of hours or something...

EDIT:

Meh...Still don't know if I should confront my boss about money issues or not...As I am struggling :(

I would, worth a shot, no harm in asking (most of the time!).

That's the thing...Do I risk saying something directly (Let face it, he knows i'm on next to nothing at my age) and potentially shoot myself in the foot and get told to stfu...

Or do I say it, and get told what I have already been told...that there is no money?

So I was made redundant at the end of March, and I have until the end of May to find a new job. Waiting to hear back from a publisher this week about a writing job for a computing magazine, also got an interview in Cambridge for a role training retail staff on IT products. If I have no success by the end of this week, it's 'get any job at all' time, which I was really hoping wouldn't happen :(

Fingers crossed for me please folks!

Best of luck buddy :)

I'm looking to get out of my job now. Two years in and working every evening and every weekend has taken enough toll. I want out, I want a social life - or at least the option for one - back again.

First step, I've redone my CV and updated my Monster profile. Next step I suppose is taking myself down the agencies.

CW Jobs as well? :)
