Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Grudas, what sites are you using? Check the OP for some sites you might not have thought of, update the CV on the website every week so it refreshes on to the top of the search list as well.

Try also looking for some rollout / installation jobs as well, I swear I saw a couple in the london area the other day.

As above, take you DOB off, it's useless, let them read the CV and go 'hey, this person is pretty good'....Then they have to interview you without going, oh wait, he's 45 or he's too young etc :)

Yeah, just start low & work up.

I left school with pretty terrible grades (didn't do any coursework) - hopped around 5 difference colleges trying to find something.

Ended up having to get a job phoning people for energy readings for 11k for my first job at 22.

But by 23 I managed to get to 16k (two promotions).

24 I got made a senior in the latter promotion 19k

25 Moved to commercial 24k

26 Pay-rise 27k

27 (now) Just started in a different company in a similar role on 34k.

Time, patience & a willingness to start at the bottom will get you through it.

That low-paid job may seem bad now, but it's a start - as long as you keep trying for that one position higher you should be ok.

Sweet

I left school with not much, started a job building pc's on 7k, and get to 14k after a few years but sadly everyone got made redundant...Since then i've been like a yo-yo :(

Ended up getting to 18k which was comfortable for me...Then that went to pot...Then i've gone back down to just over 12k per-annum :(...Sucks really, as i'm struggling like hell at the moment, and as it's public sector I can't see it going up again any time soon...

Only just been given a slight rise so I can manage our website, but for what the tiny rise was worth its not worth the extra workload to be honest...Pretty much doing two full-time jobs are once :(

I'm sick to the back teeth of self-serving recruiters wasting hours of my time. I had one recruiter on my case who managed to get me two interviews, and I almost got one of the positions on offer. Could I get any feedback? No. Same with the second interview. I've since had several others asking me to send them CVs and to fill out applications, after which they promise to call back the next day. They do not.

I have just finished a self-sponsored engineering HNC (continuing to HND), have lots of experience and am looking to get into mechanical design in a junior position (to start with).

My CV is good, but recruiters seem lacklustre at best. I think it's time to blanket local firms with my CV.

That really does suck man.

Ask around, tell your friends you are looking for junior mechanical design job....Hell, even something mechanical with progression in to design would be a start.

Look for local companies, bombard them :)

Best of luck dude,I wish I knew what I wanted to actually be doing

Not a secret as such, just that my current employer isn't aware I'll be leaving yet :)

Took the job that lets me move back home, it's also a nice little pay bump so should be good.

Working for a large consultancy/services firm, primarily based on one of their contracts but have been told I could get to work on some others which would be nice.

The office is a fair commute (100 miles from door to desk) but a combination of being able to have a company car if I want and also lots of home working don't make it too bad. Or it's only an hour and 20 mins on a train.

Fair game buddy

I used to commute for an hour for 12k a year :o That was fun.

torN:

I wouldn't worry about how you handled it, at the end of the day, if they didn't communicate it properly it's not your fault, they should have given it you in writing or email regardless really...I've heard of having a couple of days on the job to see if you meet expectations, but not just out of the blue

Very odd indeed!

I've an interview this afternoon and also one next Thursday too. I'm currently employed but looking for something closer to the area I'm moving to at the end of the month.

Currently brushing up my excel skills and learning likely processes I think they'll expect from me. I've answers and points prepared for any potential questions.

I have a 40 minute exam covering numeracy, IT skills and relevant legislation which I'm a bit anxious about as whilst I have worked in the area before I know that their processes are very different and legislation isn't something I need to know with my current role. However I have done my homework so fingers crossed :)

I hate the idea of an exam based interview :( Never done one

Best of luck though buddy, good on you for looking before you move though, would make things easier :)

Sadly it's not as simple as that :(

As the first company could be seen as the reason the poster knows about the position they have 'dibs' on him :p

It's the same for things like when you are selling your house, you can't have an agent show someone round your house, then go to the people directly and sell to them cutting out the agent and their fees.

The agent can, and will, sue you for it and win to get their money as they were the people who introduced both parties.

Still daft...Depends if it states it in the terms :p

Ta,

I'm kind of hoping I can be interviewed first and then do the exam so I don't get knocked if I feel the exam went badly. I think it's more to check I'm familiar with the systems rather than needing a particular score.

Hopefully I can blow their socks off in the interview to make up for any shortfall in my exam score. We'll see!

:)

Let us know how you get on

Thanks for the replies guys, to my "twilight zone" interview, I thought I might of been wrong, but It appears I am not. Fingers crossed I find something soon. I graduated in July '11 and have had 4 interviews so far, thats if you count my latest one. First interview was with a very large investment company that has an "in house" web design team, second was with a small company that deals with B2B, my third was with a company in the same city where i went to uni. I was offered the job but only to have the offer postponed for 3/4 months and i doubt I will hear about that job again.

I'm wondering if I should take the web design route or not....But having never really tinkered with the trade properly i'm not sure if it would be for me entirely
