Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Back on the job market again after finishing with my last job on Friday.
I've a year's IT support experience and a 2:1 IT degree, plus 19 years as a BT technician previously but struggling to get any responses to my job applications : (

I think the opportunities in the first two positions in terms of management and workload would give you more experience to advance your career in the future. The internal advancement opportunities might not be great but people move around that much these days I don't see it as a massive selling point.

Albeit on the information provided, I'd go with option 2.

Option 2 is actually my current favourite as the site is just epic and they all seemed really relaxed and friendly. However I have this nagging feeling that 1. would be more money, zero car costs, and a DEAD easy commute allowing me more time with my young family, and 3. would be fantastic on my CV as the company is a monster. I'm concerned that I should go for a career move and not which has the greenest surroundings!

If the salaries are within a few £k of each other I'd be tempted to go with option 3 - if you think you can progress well then it could be short term pain for long term gain (so to speak). Also what about bonuses? Surely the larger company (option 3) is more likely to give a (bigger) bonus?

Salary isn't everything, what about the overall package? Bonuses, pension, share scheme, health insurance etc can all effectively add a few £k to a salary even if it's not money in your pocket and a more long term thing.

That is very true, which is why I tried to simplify things for the purposes of this discussion. Once you factor in bonus, share save schemes, health, dental, etc. they're still all very close and still in the order I've placed them. In terms of potential bonus, job 2 is actually the largest at 25%, but that could fluctuate far more than the other two hence it's hard to say what the actual final reward would be and hence I just stuck to salary.

I think this will be the hardest decision I've had to make for a long long time!

Agreed, not an easy decision! Why isn't there ever an option 4 which has the highest pay, best prospects, shortest commute, best benefits, nicest offices etc :p

How far is your commute now? Is it much shorter than option 2/3?

Difficult to say really without knowing the salaries and more about the companies and your line of work really.

Either way can't really lose if you've got a choice of 3 :)

^ Indeed, but I don't want to get into specifics sorry.

Yes, it is much shorter - 5 miles / 15 minutes by bike. I love that as I get home at 5:30 most nights feeling happy and relaxed, with loads of evening time still left. However as much as I'd like that for the rest of my career, I need to make a decision based on career potential not how quickly I can get my arse on the sofa in the evening.

I understand that as I have a short walk to work atm. I guess what you need to decide is whether option 2/3 will be worth it financially for a slightly longer commute - will the financial benefit outweigh the longer commute? Although 30-45mins isn't the shortest commute ever, it's hardly horrific either. A lot of people have worse commutes.....you could be stuck on a packed train! :D

To be honest none of them are what I'd call a long commute or something that would bother me.

Go with your gut, whichever you feel more comfortable with.

Financial services stuff always looks good on the CV though ;)

anyone who's been keeping tabs on the whole tesco work scheme benefit thing should check out newsnight tonight there on about it now.

well for anyone who cant be botherd to watch it, the conservitive minister on it couldnt see anything wrong and said its a good work exp program for young people.

talk about not living in a closed world.

id be cheeky and ask them exactly what the other candidate has over you qualififcation wise so you know what training to take to help further your career.

I get so sick of companies belittling candidates and asking for too much for low paid, crappy jobs.

So in the end I just went freelance and learned skills along the way.
