Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Signed on for the first time in 18 months nothing as changed in the place still clueless as whats going on out there and still as condescending as ever

and i guess thats whats wrong with these services mrk, there being looked at as a money making opertunity rather than a aid to help people get back in work.

role on hanging around the jobcenter for an hour or more, already had to hang about for over 30 mins past my apointment time twice so far, i can see it going back to the old system of get claiments in and out as fast as possible, so even less actual face time with an advisor.

True! I did sign up for JSA once when I had a bit of a break in between contracting as nothing was available for 2 months. I sheepishly signed up 2 weeks before the 2 months came to an end and just as the JSA confirmation letter came, I landed a 6 month contract so didn't progress with it further.

I do remember sitting around the JC office for ages and recall nobody having a smile on their face!!

Finally got my first job after uni. I have been to plenty of interviews in my local area but never got the final position. was very frustrating having a second interview and then they vanish without even inforing me if i was un successful. Stoke seems like a tough place to get work as a web developer!

My friend works for a company in chesterfield and got me an interview. Absolutely lovely people and they offerd me the job on the spot! My area of work is not that well paid i was offerd £15k for a junior graphic designer i was umming and arrring about it so they offerd me £16500 to show they liked me.

Its an hour and 20 minute drive away but i will be car sharing so wont be so bad. It sucks i have to go so far out of my way for such a modest wage but those are the times.

Im 22 so im looking at the bigger picture. Traveling an hour each way sure beats sitting on my arse in a dead end call center 10 minutes away. Its an excellent company and im looking forward to it.

If im comforatble in 6 months or so time ill move closer as im living with parents a the moment anyway, Hopefully if i work hard i can imporve my wage, Too many geaduates are simply sitting on thier arses not doing anything becuase either A} They think they they should have more money or B) Employers are asking for working experince that we simply do not have

Congrats Stoke, get stuck in and get your career portfolio started :)

And congrats Robbie, you sound chuffed :)

I'll hear about whether I'm getting redundo on Friday.

Put myself back out there after getting my 3rd promotion turned down at my current employers.

Signed up to 1 agency yesterday and already got spammed about 20 completely irrelevant jobs, in far away places. These sites and the people that take your information really do not read your cv or your location do they !!!! ****** me right off !!

Still found an awesome role today which would suit me ideally but I am lacking in some of the more modern OS skills, especially Windows 7. Might have to bite bullet and buy it so I can learn it.

I understand that as I have a short walk to work atm. I guess what you need to decide is whether option 2/3 will be worth it financially for a slightly longer commute - will the financial benefit outweigh the longer commute? Although 30-45mins isn't the shortest commute ever, it's hardly horrific either. A lot of people have worse commutes.....you could be stuck on a packed train! :D

To be honest none of them are what I'd call a long commute or something that would bother me.

Go with your gut, whichever you feel more comfortable with.

Financial services stuff always looks good on the CV though ;)

Well I went for option 2, financial services in the group finance department. They bumped up their offer a bit too. Really good package and 35 hr working week, cycle-able in 1hr which will be nice come the summer.

Happy with my decision, role on Monday when I drop the bombshell at work. My boss will be spitting feathers as someone else in the department has just resigned.

Congrats :). Is that one hour each way or in total?

I recently handed in my notice (start my new job in mid April) and everyone was very pleasant about it and congratulating me which is nice.

Hopefully your boss won't throw too much of a wobbly.

I applied for a job last week. I'm currently working for a company and the job I applied for was with a different company (better imo) and the job role is the same as I'm currently in. I had an interview on monday and I think it went well but I'll not hear until next Friday at the latest. The waiting is killing me :(

I've actually been open with this new job with my 2 managers at my current place and they've been thankful about it although I've already accepted the new position, I have yet to inform them that I've made the decision to move and will be doing this tomorrow.
I wanted to wait and see what they thought about the situation and I'm glad to say they're on my side, not that I thought they wouldn't be because they're pretty damn good folks which is why the decision has been harder because not many companies out there have this kind of openness and flexibility like they do here even if the prospects are fairly low.

Both of them have said they would be sorry to see me go but they would completely understand if I did.
I showed them the package details I am being offered and they understood where I was coming from. They said that the company could pay more and asked what I would want if they were to keep me but I said it's not just about the money and that after so many years of the same daily duties I was left wanting for a more immediate challenge career wise and of course the benefits package the new employer has on offer is highly attractive too, something my current employer cannot beat.

I also mentioned the fact that I have always been looking long term, the new employer has set processes for salary review and bonuses etc whereas here it's all down to if the company makes any money to be able to afford to pay more each year, so while my position here is always secure due to the role itself, it's not as career satisfying as I wanted it to be.

At least at the end of the day I know that my current employer will always give me an excellent reference and I'll be leaving on a good note.

That is excellent! As you say, the extra travel is worth it for the right place and the car sharing eases the pain a bit too :)

Hopefully you get the outcome you're looking for with that!

Seems like everyone in this thread has a job now haha!

Still looking myself. Graduated last July, got a job in October until December. Been on the dole since the start of January. Had an interview a couple of weeks ago but I didn't get it unfortunately.

I've been trying to apply for graduate jobs but the application forms drive me mental. They can take up to half an hour to fill in each! Really annoying.
Anyone know of any good firefox extensions that could fill in all that stuff for me? Would save a lot of time.

Thanks, will be celebrating tonight :D.

One hour each way if I choose to bike it, but if I consider that I'd be spending an hour at the gym most nights anyway, then I can consider half of that commute as exercise and cancel my gym membership. Looking at it that way, it's really only half an hour each way...if that makes sense?

I have no doubt that my boss will throw a massive wobbly, especially when I ask him if I can leave before my notice is served. However I need to be careful he doesn't repay me by refusing to give a reference.

Sorry for saying this but I would not like to be a graduate or otherwise inexperienced job seeker at the moment. A family friend has just graduated from Oxford (proper) with a 1st in PPE and wants to get into marketing, but cannot get past first interview stage at any grad scheme. Her dad thinks that Oxbridge is a disadvantage for marketing. She's now looking at going back to study law as apparently lawyers look far more favourably on Oxbridge degrees (which having met many lawyers I can totally believe).

The local JCP (well, the only one in the county) is open on weekends to deal with the rising number of unemployed. The security staff seem more vigilant too, people are getting upset about the long wait times and bureaucratic snafus caused by overworked staff.

As said in another thread looks like I'm good for an ICT Support Tech job at a school and they got the ball rolling with CRB/paperwork last week and to expect a written offer in the post.

Email them today and they've said they're offering me the post in the near future and some issues have arisen that aren't directly related to me and that I 'shouldn't worry' and there'll be a delay of about another week.

NERVOUS. ARGH.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like a great time to be graduate, but I guess you just need to know where to look and make sure to sell yourself on your CV. I count myself as lucky to be in an industry where they are a lot of vacancies and not enough people to fill them.

Don't mean to insult your family friend, but does she have much going on on her CV outside of her degree? Does she seem like a rounded person? A lot of employers will want to see more than just a decent degree to prove you're worth getting the job, they'll want to see examples of extra curricular activities and work experience that show you've got relevant skills outside of academia.

Hm...I've recently been told about a job, and the agency have given me the company details and everything...Whats stopping me going directly? :p

Naturally the agency may have already passed your details on....But you know

EDIT: I'm not going to do it, but you do wonder sometimes

Hm...Just had a reply, agent suddenly wants a telephone interview lol, bricking it slightly as the job is way above me...They did say that the job had changed 'a little', so bit skeptical there.

honestly its an agency, i wouldnt bet the job in the first place was that real. iv seen agencies posting jobs for the local council even though the agancy hadnt been used for over 12 months, but they still claimed to have the jobs available.
