Forgot how bad job searching was :(

It seems like a strange industry it really does. It all depends on what you like about it? Design or Development?

Well I'm currently playing with our internal website, which uses a VLE based system. Also played with other things relating to websites, never got majorly in to the HTML side of things though

So i'm guessing more the design side, but i'm open so development could be an option :)

So I thundered up the M40 with some questionable driving 'maneuvers' and got there an hour early! So I went over my notes and answers in my head for about half an hour, took 10 minutes to relax and went in about 15 minutes early. I had about a half hour wait before I was seen which I watched their display videos and had a look at their awards and also company days out etc.

I was taken through a small office and in to a board room at the back where she began to interview me. She only asked me about 4 questions in total, what could I tell them about the company (quite a lot!) which she then expanded on, why I was leaving my current position, asked me to describe my current position, if I was easy to get on with and where I wanted to be in 2 to 3 years.

After this I had to sit a series of short tests which were if I'm honest not difficult however I found them a little challenging due to not being familiar with the layout of new office versions I thought to myself '****!' as even the simplest of tasks such as changing the colour of a header can take a while whilst you find the right toolbar. There was a short test on punctuation/grammar, a maths test (percentages, problem solving, number sequences etc) another on excel skills which was mostly based on sums and increasing by percentages and also a short test relevant to the legislation. She said I had 40 minutes and came back in after 20 asking if I was done?! There was actually quite a bit of volume for 40 minutes. I said I did my best but didn't quite get it all done and explained that I wasn't familiar with the newer versions of office but did as much as possible rather than struggling on one particular task.

After that she asked if I had any questions which she seemed impressed with the ones I did ask and seemed to enjoy answering them (why do you like working here, where do you see the company in 5-10 years, is there anything you'd like me to clarify or that was unclear that might lead you to believe I'm not the best candidate for the job). On my final question she told me I was 'in the lead' and she'd like to bring me back for a second interview and to meet the team:) though she has one more person to interview tomorrow. Looking good but I don't want to jump the gun until something is signed.

Some of the answers to the tests were actually at the bottom of the documents! and there were other candidates folders easily accesible but I resisted temptation for fear of 'recently opened documents' incriminating me! She said one candidate walked out as they had never used excel :S

tl:dr, went well, expecting to hear from them today for a second interview \o/

Nice one Benny :)

Not sure if I'd go for an office based job that revolves around MS Office, but hey. Good to know they like you already though.

Oh and ta for the info on what questions you can ask them, I always fail to do that.

I'll have no reason not to have pr0 office skills. As it's payroll related the company in question out sources with a bureau though may in the future due to expansion process more in office with new systems.

No worries, the final question, asking them if they want anything clarified or if you've said anything that might make them think you're not the best candidate for the job, is good as it shows a bit of concern and desire for the job but also ,if they're willing to tell you, can get you a little bit of feedback right there which could be useful for future interviews.

Aye, it's good :)

So what work are you primarily involved in? Or looking for exactly?

When I got back from Uni I temped in Payroll and then 2 months later was asked to go full time. Been here 14 months or so now but am moving to the next county (house purchase) so looking for something a bit closer with room for progression.

I'm currently a payroll administrator part of a 2/3 person team for around 400 weekly paid staff. The role that I have a foot in the door for, just waiting for my boss to give a reference now, is again payroll administration but for a much smaller company and a smaller 50 person monthly payroll + other duties. The company is expanding so the role will be sole and most likely in a few years have 1 or two people beneath me in my team.

It might look like a slight step down but it's more a step sideways, with a salary increase and the oppurtunity to learn lots of new skills and also increase my experience in the payroll area.

Considering the role the pay tends to be pretty good, it's a lot of responsibility and can be quite hectic as you're working under pressure to deadlines but despite the repetitveness and monotomous sides to it for some reason I quite enjoy it.

Fair play buddy :)

Can't say if I would or wouldn't enjoy it, having never done it. Currently doing IT Support in a school and working on their website/VLE, it's okay, but some of the calls we get are just a tad below what I used to do :(

Ah well, will keep my eyes open

It's a lot of problem solving mostly which can be quite challenging.

Definitely always keep your eyes peeled for bigger and better things but job hopping can raise questions about lack of commitment or loyalty. I was in my last job for over a year so I would probably aim to stay in this one for 2 or 3 years (if I get it) before actively finding something else myself. Unless I was head hunted before then, which is unlikely!

It's all about having a striking and confident CV to get you the interviews then just good preparation and practise to nail it and impress.

Indeed, my issue is since I was made redundact back in 2008 (Pretty much why I created this thread) I've not been in a job for over a year until this one I'm in currently...I do however have reasons for leaving, some medical some the company being brought out.

Annoys the hell out of me, as I want to find something I like and stay there for a while really...Only issue with this place is the pay

Hmm.. I'm sure something will come up sooner or later. In the meantime at least you have some income even if it's not a massive amount.

Nationwide offer income protection insurance, providing you've been employed for 6 months previously. Would cost about £28 per month to have a safety net of just over £600 or £48 for a safety net of just short of £1100 per month.

Just noticed you're in Bucks, where abouts? Moving to Aylesbury, well just north of it in 3 weeks :)

Oh okay, never knew that about nationwide.

Cool! I used to work in Aylesbury :o I'm actually located in between Aylesbury and Buckingham, Aylesbury is about 15 mins away by car I guess.

Just had a bit of a fun "we don't know" telephone scenario.

Found this job on s1jobs.con
http://www.s1jobs.com/job/edinburgh/media-design/web+design+-+production/421499141.html

So phoned up jobcentre plus asking about it, they couldn't help as they need their reference number and I can't find it on their own website. I also tell them it also says to contact "skills development scotland advisor" they don't know what this is but advise to contact my local job centre. Upon doing so they also don't know who it is but passes me through to some-one who they think it could be.
She doesn't know, but tries to find the job online, but can't and gives me career-scotland's number to try. So I go hunting a wee bit more and find the job here:
http://www.scvo.net/Home/viewjob.aspx?Oeid=4120&oid=1

It's asking to contact my personal advisor, who I haven't met and I am thinking what's the point if I can't find the job centre reference number as no doubt I'll just be told they don't know. Eurgh.

Can't help i'm afraid man :(

I've looked for the job elsewhere and I can find links to the S1 site but nothing seperate...Just make sure you note down everything, who you have been forwarded on to etc as you're trying to apply for the damn job and you can't

So phoned the number today (re: the job from yesterday) and after a few rings went to the companies voicemail.
Leaving options of trying agian, or speaking to my advisor who may or may not be able to help.

Thats ridiculous :(

Just try EVERY god damn moment you get some spare time :p And when you finally speak to your adviser tell them it's ridiculous how much you have had to go through just to apply for a job!

Aye, as stated, just note everything down and who you speak to and when etc, they cant say you haven't been trying then!

Good going on getting in contact though, I hope it works out :)

Would be silly if it's purely due to you not being un-employed long enough....If thats the case work there for free for so long then employ you :p

That was worth the wait :) got the confirmation call just after 8PM.

Very good timing for me, I'll be starting in December. I'm moving to the area 6/7 weeks before, 2 off those I have off work to move in and another week of that I'm on holiday with the missus so return to a new job.

Phewwicanbreathenow. :D

Nice one Benny!!!!

And you're moving near me! (Muwahahahhaa!!!!!) Unless you got a different job?

Either way, happy for you buddy, now I need to start looking :o

Ta, will hear the package they're offering this morning hopefully. Yep still be working in Thame and moving to Aylesbury (less than two weeks )

Cool

Aylesbury to Thame is pretty painless from what I remember :)

Do you know much of Aylesbury or?

Yeah, about 12 miles or 20 minutes, according to googlemaps. Though I plan to be at my desk around 7:00AM so I miss rush hour traffic and can drive faster if necessary (and safe to do so).

To be honnest I don't know much about Aylesbury other than what I have read and seen for myself. It seems to be fairly self sufficient in that it has all the shops and facilites I will need. The direct line in to Marylebone is also handy too.

Anything I should know?

Yeah, theres a couple of tescos for instance, several petrol stations, local shops depending on where you're moving to...But yeah the train link to London is a welcome, although can be slow depending on which train you get :p

Nothing major...The evenings can be dodgey in town, but it's like any town/city I guess...Hate to say it and don't mean it in any sort of bad way, but it is reasonably heavy on the 'asian/pakistani' population within the main town.

I know a couple of people who live there anyway, including my brother :)

Oh and theres a fair wack of availability on the bus front, ie you can get to Oxford and surrounding places quite easy, and probably Thame to be fair.

I'm sure theres more I could tell you :p

Sonds fairly reasonable. I haven't a problem with other cultures or religions as long as they aren't a nuisance. Ta for your input :) If you're passing, and my home gym is set up, I'd be happy to take a look at your form/shoulder.

Sure thing, Aylesburys only a few minutes away from me anyway, well...10/15. But would be cool to get some advice on everything...As the only critique I get is via videos posted.

So i'll take you up on the offer! :p Just send me a trust email or something one day

All the best in the new job though, just need to get my finger out now

Good luck Thorik :)

Ahhhh Benny, thats annoying...Good as you've not dropped a wage...and potentially have more to look forward to for the future...but still annoying.

I can't really help you buddy...As I normally state slightly higher than my current working wage at interviews, so never had to haggle :(
