Forgot how bad job searching was :(

After some advice...

Secured an interview elsewhere (IT Field Support Engineer) for a week on Monday, but I don't know how to approach our bursar (I work at a school) about this. She's not happy when informed about stuff on the whole, so I've no idea on how to broach it. Taking holiday during term time is particularly frowned upon, last time I tried to take a day it was met with disgust. Even worse if I drop it now because the auditors are in next week and that's her version of hell.

Our consultant is in today, might it be best to go through him? He's a decent guy, works with the bursar closer than I do and the head is also his wife. He's also down as my reference so he's going to find out inevitably.

Orrrrrr do I just take a sickie?

Cheers

It's not honest but, I'd pull a sicky.

I've been lucky, in that I've never had a long job search, I've usually had one or two "sickies" for interviews, and then gotten a job. Obviously pulling sickies isn't a great strategy long term.

Feels weird having never done it before; but overall my record is pretty good; took a week off this year after having surgery on my hand and that's been it since I started here in Jan 2014.

Had my first graduate job telephone interview. Wow that went bad. I had prepared extensively but didn't feel at ease with the interviewer and just panicked a bit throughout it.

Sounds like you over prepared :p Few days before is plenty of time, once you've had an interview or two whether that's face-to-face or telephone you'll get the gist of it and nail a job soon.

That only really applied if you're getting regular interviews, though.

Anyone looking for a PHP Dev job around Manchester? My place is recruiting and in rather desperate need of some good developers.

I am going to be entering the job market (well I am now) due to impending voluntary redundancy!
Seemed a great idea at the time, and still will be should I get something within the next 6 months but it does make me a bit queasy really!

If I get to the three month mark I will be looking to take an job doing anything while something in my field / relevant to my current job comes along - anyone had any problems with this in the past?

Another question regarding my interview above; which is the best slot to book? There's 3 interviews on Thursday and 3 on Monday, 45 minutes each. I'm currently due to be the first on the Monday, but the opening slot on Thursday is still available if I want to change?

Also noticed there's actually two positions to be filled, 1/3 chance sounds promising.

I don't think the interview slot is important - earlier on, people are compared to you, later, you are compared to people... it is much the same really.

You reckon? I've always seen it as a strategic thing and planned accordingly, having never knowingly taken the first slot I dunno how it feel about doing so.

Trying to also think of questions they're going to ask me...

Really? Depends what they have for lunch then... a big heavy meal and i'd suspect some of them would drift off!

Applied for a number of positions and had some contact back already so not bad for a monday!

Working on LinkedIn optimisation now and looking to schedule some training for when i finish up.

After lunch is generally due to improved moods and concentration. Too early, people are sluggish and too late people don't care.

I'd say the earlier the better. Here's why:

If you're one of the first, you will likely have recruiters who are more engaged with the process. If you're one of the last, you've not only got to fight against whoever it is in their mind they want, but also against the disengagement of the process.

got an interview for a new job this afternoon and now im bricking it as its my first interview in 10 years. Wish me luck! Job is with a much larger company than my current one doing 2nd line IT support

Good luck.

I started at a local bookies to keep my bank manager happy whilst applying to get into the IT sector, not much in my area really but there might something along the way where I am.
