Forgot how bad job searching was :(

So I have a #2 f2f, a #1 telephone interview and still pending the outcome of a "positive" response stated in another telephone interview (should know this week) for the next step.

Busy busy - spending today doing some prep.. doesn't help I was in A&E yesterday after the doctor referred me after suspecting a fish bone.. nothing like 5 endoscopes up the nose, three attempts to take blood to make you feel great!

Update...just had a call with an offer for the position I applied direct. Amazing. :D

Just as an update on this, I've now been here since the start of May, through probation and working on projects with various big household name clients. All in all, my redundancy worked out very well for me really, I had a month off work whilst being paid well for it and then moved into a much better job at a much better company.

Company is always growing too in both the London and Bristol offices, various tech/rech related roles up for grabs at the moment so should be a decent place to stay for a decent amount of time.

So the face to face I had on wednesday came back today = not enough experience (the place wouldn't have fitted my personality to be honest).

However as of today..
* face to face interview request - this is both local and a great opportunity.
* face to face interview request (pending from positive telephone interview on thurs - the guy on the call said he wanted to get me in the office)
* Two guys I have worked with before have basically got an opportunity that is interesting (people and place) but I need to talk to the guy for a better understanding. It's good to have two people really interested to promote traction for the role - not much has been said other than a basic one line objective for the role (so you can see it's relatively senior!)
* and an agent seems interested too..

What is interesting is that there's a spate of roles I've applied for 6 weeks ago that have just appeared on the radar. Most 'experts' seem to say that's 2 weeks max or consider it dead.

I need to get more applications out if, realistically, it's taking 1.5 months for decisions to be made.

I must say that I find face to face interviews difficult and I stress out a lot about them.

I had an interview today for a promotion at work, and even though I feel it went well as I had a lot of examples of relevant stuff within the department I am looking to get promoted within, I still felt drained after.

Hats off to you all and good luck with your searching as I would get very run down after a few.

In regards to interviews - I have very strict guidelines when I am hiring in terms of timescales as I hate waiting for feedback so wont subject people to having to wait for feedback from me.

Goes as follows:
  • Candidate gets uploaded to position whether it be an agency or direct
  • CV gets reviewed my me and the other manager immediately, whether it be one of us on our computer or phone if we are in a meeting
  • Agency/our recruitment team - gets an email within the hour saying yes we want to proceed, or no
  • We hire people with languages for one section of the department so we find out the candidates available that day for a phone language test.
  • by This point the candidate has had contact with the business within 3-4 hours
  • Language test done as soon as their schedule allows - feedback to agency/recruitment team immediately.
  • Interview organised as soon as the candidate can do it

This whole process we have done in a single day before and they have appeared in the office in the afternoon for an interview, after applying that morning.

Face to face interview goes ahead, feedback is provided(without decision) within 24 hours. And the decision is made by 3pm on the closing date posted on the original advertisement.(always a Wednesday so we can get credit checks done etc)

The overall process is very tight and very efficient and means people aren't waiting around which I hate. I once had to wait 2 months to get a No, obviously I gave up hoping and was surprised when I got the call.

Crazy..
* management consultancy have rejected on the initial application and have a policy of not considering applications for any further positions for a 12-18 month period after rejecting. Their loss.
* Get rejected after the f2f in london - an old school project management based organisation that really didn't want to change from the style they had but was also saying that was one of their big problems. So quite glad about that.
* Did presentation and document for a f2f only to find out that the interview hadn't been organised (interviewing company not organising). So got that next week
* another pending f2f invite is slow to return with the dates.. think the place is slow over all but it's a great opportunity. Got todo a presentation for this one too.
* got phone interview with the HR bod of a couple of mates place tomorrow morning..

Add that prep work I had two trips to hospital a day each has sapped momentum of doing applications. Got to get going again.. The main issues are when the recruitment is just one of many tasks or that they're using approvals etc from a US HQ for example.

Thing is all this prep is great for keeping the skills going to a certain degree.

Annoying agent of the month goes to a woman that called up and during the qualification was asking for the names of the companies I may be interviewed with in the past. It's private and unprofessional for an agent to ask for details.

Just completed a thorough online search for jobs
  • Indeed
  • S1Jobs
  • Jobs North
  • NHS webpage
  • Highland council webpage

No jobs that are worth doing, and those that would give me a good raise im grosely under qualified for.

I even broadened my search for the whole highlands.

Guess its time to leave scotland, whether I can afford it or not. cant put up with 13K for a skilled IT job anymore.

Maybe, but I guess it stops them wasting time chasing employers who'll reject your application on the basis of already having interviewed or applied with in the last 12-18 months.

I can't believe I'm posting an HBR (Harvard Business Review) article to GD.... but this is worth it and believe me, have a read:

Neat example. "Don't tell us - show us"

Although it's a high risk strategy, I ended writing a Linkedin post and published it this afternoon around the changing job market. Oddly it got a lot of interest from recruiters in my linkedin network :D

For the same company - that's fine, but for others?

Really - if they're not going to tell me realistically the state of the vacancy (i.e. how many people they've interviewed and what the current state is) then I'm not going to even entertain that.

Yes I've interviewed - I told them that but I'm not going to give them details so they can phone up the company and mess up my application.. Yes I've heard of agents doing that - hence the unprofessional point.

I have moved positions 3 times in the last 4 years.
Firstly I got made redundant after 17 years as a manager with the same company. I saw it coming and swiftly started looking at other companies.
I then ended up working at JLR on the shop floor assembling Range Rovers.
I was then asked to move to another area of JLR and become a group leader after 6 months. We had a young son and the travelling at the time was putting a lot of the strain on my wife.
I wasn't really looking to leave, until a call from a recruitment agency landed me where I am now ( a lot closer to home and a pay rise).
This is another Blue Chip company and I have become de-motivated with the role. They were wanting people who can change people's behaviours and that is all well and good, but when the upper management don't want to change you are banging your head against a brick wall.
I am now going through the final stages of recruitment back at JLR in a more senior position. I also have applied for another role within my current company and after turning it down due to salry constraints, have got the department manager wanting to speak to me in his own time about taking the role and also adjusting the salary to suit.
My own manager is leaving, so I have been approached about applying for his position!
They yesterday, I get another call offering me an interview on Wednesday at another employer in a higher position.

Just like buses, these things all come at once.

I have updated my CV recently and a lot of agencies have noticed this and been in touch. My advice would be to update it as regularly as you can, if you are looking for other employment, as yours will soon slip to the bottom of the pile if it is uploaded online.

Well im working a retail job at the minute now. Nice to be back in work! Waiting for a start date for the prison service after passing a medical on tuesday. Off to England for Officer Main Board with the Army on Monday and have a date for the Police SEARCH assessment for kent police force. After a long time unemployed things are starting to look up!

Thats a good read and some useful tips included.

Best to post in here I guess?

Mostly doing 1st/2nd line support at a school recently, kinda fed up on my pity of a salary, only being allowed to take leave during term time and rather long hours of 7:45am-6pm. Plus I'm rather tired of dealing with proper morons on a day to day basis. Like, proper thick. Currently studying for MCSA in Server 2012, (finally) sorted my A+ and Network+ earlier in the year.

Fishing recently for similar jobs earning more the last 3 days and the moment upon submitting one application I get a call from an agency. They asked a few questions before shooting ahead about a job as a 'Customer Support Engineer' for a Managed service, dealing with several clients at any given time. Looking through the JD it looks interesting enough, but incredibly customer service driven; if there's a problem I like to take my time troubleshooting before getting a fix nailed down. And whilst the opportunity to work across several different things with different clients is interesting I can see myself getting swamped down.

So has anyone any experiences of it? Advice? Right now the company in question have seen my CV and are interested, but I'm inclined to politely decline it.

You are going to need to learn to work under pressure. Sounds like you've got it easy and can take your time. In reality it's mostly not like that elsewhere, so to put it bluntly, man up or shut up.

I work under pressure that's for sure; currently I've about 20 odd jobs on the go I'm sifting through. And trust me my job is not easy...

Again, just the 'customer service' element I'm not sold on....

Got a question hope its ok.

Currently in employment and have been for 4 years in the same role, have very good references in this role and am a model employee.

Have had 3 interviews with a new company and been offered the job £26k rather than £18k im on now so a massive jump.

Its in the same field, Field Service so dealing with machines and cash handling etc.

My current job I had to do a CRB and a basic check Drivers Licence this is clean so all good.

New job has asked me for an Experian Background Check, filled it all out to the best of my ability,

My last employment ended in 2011 and I got dismissed also my last 3 previous jobs I didnt know the exact dates I left so just made these up, they check 10 years back I did work for the companies but unsure of dates.

Also they do a credit check, now it only checks ccj so it says but have s default 8 years ago HR know I told them and have a score below 450.

Now it does not mention it check if you got sacked or left etc I just am really worrying as I have had not had to do this before and really want the job after all I have been offered it :( MASSIVE headache becasue I know a lot of what I inputted will come back differently :(

Gahhh massive hoops to get new work. Almost like 'poor' folk or people who have had a poor history and turned it around SUFFER in seeking employment, no wonder so many are unemployed.

If they aren't giving you a credit line, the background check will purely check for bankruptcy or CCJ's - I wouldn't have told them about the default but I doubt it would cause an issue.

No credit line, it is a CCJ Check and Bankruptcy check but I was 100 % honest and did not want to hold anything back.

Just worried about the exact dates of previous employment I noted month on CV rather than dates and the Background Checker wanted exact dates so I just chose random ones in that month as I was unsure of exact dates.

Im just worrying because its an awesome opportunity and took me 3 weeks of interviews to get accepted pending this check!!
