Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Still working at the toy store and had no replies back from anyone... I've applied for 4-5 jobs (as well as sent dozens of CV's as usual) in the last month or so and heard back nothing, is this pretty normal? I'm hoping the companies are just waiting for a few more replies/a deadline but i'm guessing they just don't want me... It's starting to get even more frustrating now, i'm just loosing all hope of actually working in a career and starting to thing Imay as well just be a bum or shelf stacher for the rest of my life... At least i'll never have to pay back my loan...

You'd think people would have the common courtesy to at least reply, having said that i'm loosing all faith in humanity working in the place I do so it doesn't suprise me... :(

That is scarily close to how I feel about the whole thing. It's massive disillusionment.

As I said earlier, I'm hitting it again in 2010 because I cannot stand living like this. It's driving me insane that I can't do anything to effect change until I'm earning a respectable wage. It really does feel like I might aswell dream of setting foot on the moon at present.

When I was applying this year, I gave up expecting responses. No one ever seems to get back to you, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Yep, especially as my course wasn't a "micky mouse" course, it was a specific traditional one, I'm guessing a lot of graduates in a similar vein, like engineers are in the same boat, thinking they should be able to get a reasonable job in an engineering discipline soonish after they leave and then finding not (I didn't do engineering but a physical science)... I really need to get my masters application sorted, i'm thinking right now thats the only way i'll be able to get something worthwhile and then maybe a job after that. Just another wasted year so far, pointless...

That's what really gets me, yes I know companies get a lot of speculative CV's and job applications but it doesn't take long to send out just a quick acknowledgement that you aren't what is required/they will keep your CV on record, after all you did spend hours searching for them, writing a covering letter and emailing them...

For me the other really annoying thing is the 1 year+ issue, everyone wants people with just a little experience, and even my internship doesn't seem to be enough.

Yup. It's a ****. Here's to a new decade though, eh?

How are you thinking of paying for a Masters?

At a guess, for a one year course we're looking at - what - £3,000? Add on living expenses, rent, books, possibility of running a car, etc. and it soon adds up to quite a large sum. Even if I were to drop all my plans of a holiday, etc. and start saving it's going to take me around three years to put myself in such a position at which point I'll be 26. I'm not happy with that. I need at least £18k pa at the moment so my life doesn't stagnate before it begins.

I think I'm going to see if anything happens come mid-year. Else, I'm going to seriously consider either teaching abroad for a year or doing a PGCE. I've said I don't like the way the little kids get away with murder, but I'd happily put up with that for a few years if it means I can emigrate.

A scholarship hopefully, there are enough for over half the places on the course usually (depending as well on whether I get on the course), otherwise I may have to get a loan (either form the bank or my parents at a big push) however I would probably drop the idea if I don't get a scholarship. I had planned to get a reasonable job and then done a masters either in 2010 or 2011, paying for it from my pay but obviously that's not very likely to happen now.

Yes it's the same here too. Usually if you contact a company HR directly then you get a response. Some companies state on their website that they will contact you if they wish to take it any further. Others state they will contact you by email etc if you're rejected. However it's more likely that a company HR will respond in some way compared to a recruiter.

I'm sitting waiting to hear if one place will offer me a role (three interviews, last yesterday) and in the meantime I'll continue pushing out the applications. I prioritise on company then recruiter for the very reason it's more likely you'll hear back from a company.

I have pretty much scrapped the idea of getting anything more in december and assuming that any roles etc that do appear will show up in Jan/Feb at the end of which I have to make up my mind if I continue on this or look for something in the mean time to bring in some cash so I'm not throwing all my money down the drain. Problem is if I go for a job then it's unlikely I'm going to be able to ask for time off for an interview..

ok I get to take an interview to keep my job on friday! really don't want to start jobhunting just after christmas AGAIN.
there are aparently 3 posistions (1 perm 2 temp 6 month) so with only 4-5 of us applying I hope I get one (perm please god let this carp end!)

Had an interview for Admiral Insurance yesterday, they are a big employer around here and the pay is pretty decent, a lot better than my current job anyway. They are getting back to me by the end of the week :)

Waiting to hear back from British Gas. Had an assesment about 2 weeks ago and will be within 3 they said. TBH i don't think i did very well on the questions they asked, i may have done though just not too sure. Also i had to do role play and i thought i sucked but you never know! Thats about the only hope i have at the moment. Working at curry's over christmas but it's messed up my benefits so i'm actually 3-400 quid worse off and cant pay my rent. should have just stayed jobless ffs :P

Waiting to hear back from British Gas.

I've applied to BG twice for two separate roles - the last including a personal reference from a BG employee I've worked with before and experience in the electricity deregulation market but no go. At least they have the politeness have the system send you an email.

Also forgot that other annoying thing is that jobsites are paid for a period to advertise the vacancy, often that can continue past the closing date for applications. Quite often, with the current market making getting headcount sign-off hard and with so many applications they'll just wait until the perfect person comes along.. ie never.

Hmm that doesn't give me much hope!!!! It's the only thing i have to wait for that may give me a lifeline.

Oh well fingers crossed, if i don't get it then i'll just drown in my own debt and depression very soon :(

Many thanks for your application to X through Jobsite XML.

We aim to give all applicants an excellent service and respond personally to each of you; however, due to the high levels of applicants for particular roles, sometimes this is not possible.

We ask, that if you have not been contacted by a X consultant within 7 days, to please assume that your application has not been successful for that specific role.

We will, however, retain and/or update your details on our database and will contact you should we find you suitable for any future opportunities. If you would prefer for X not to contact you, please email us and we will remove your contact details from our database.

Thank you for your interest in this role, we hope we're able to help you and wish you the best of luck with your search for employment.

At least on this you can put in your diary a finalisation date for the opportunity.

Yeah im 18

I am at college 5 days a week

10 am - 2 pm

then I work in a primary school from 3pm - 6pm, looking after the kids.

So I am free from like 7pm onwards and weekends

Tesco is probably a good option then. Could prob do evenings if you have a 24hr store and work something like 7-midnight. The pluspoint is that you should find it easy to pick up extra shifts when not at college :)

Hmm got a call back from that agency, I think my super-duper-cover-letter(tm) pushed all the right recruiter buttons on that one! It's a 3m contract with the possibility of going perm.. so basically it would be money for three months.

Best thing would be to pop down to your local tesco and have a chat. The problem you may find for an evening role is that they can fill it with people that will do day and evening..

best option with agencys is to go in there, kick down the door and ask for a job!
