Forgot how bad job searching was :(

There is a dearth of interesting temp work in Reading.

Like I said, the money is pretty pap, less than a third of what I was on earlier this year.

Can't moan really though. :)

Heh, indeed...I've had to settle for a job with an 8k decrease in my salary...feeling it to be honest :( Struggling with the last £30 in my account each month!

Never mind eh :)

Well chaps.

Went for a LOAD of tests this morning as the company who's temp job I have gone for are very strict with who they take on.

Had to do some basic stuff then sit an online exam for an hour covering business finances / percentage sales increases etc etc. What a nightmare. Gave me a headache as well! I have NEVER been tested so much for what is essentially, a low paid temp job.

Anyway, I have just had a call saying I passed everything with flying colours and I start a project for them on Wednesday for 6 weeks minimum.

Sounds like good scope for getting a permanent job there as well and it is right in the market I was looking for. It is with ING Direct.

Just having a beer now. :)

Finally got an interview :) Not for the most interesting or well-paid job, and it's temporary but I guess it'll help if all goes smoothly...

I would have thought Reading and the surrounding areas would have lots of Jobs due to the Thames Valley and Technology?

I second that. Dell's UK HQ is in Bracknell, for starters.

HP are in Bracknell as well, loads of places up there.

Certainly are, just got a job with them. 3M and Cable & Wireless are also in the same industrial area. It's temporary work that's the issue in Reading :)

Well done!

Current score:
Applications - 4
Interviews - 4
2nd Interviews - 3
Offers - 0

Keep getting excellent feedback but there's always a reason they go with someone else. Got a 'no' yesterday because the other guy was immediatley available while I've got another 3 weeks here.

Getting a bit disheartened by all this tbh.

Keep at it buddy, atleast you are getting interviews :)

a lot of people I know aren't even getting seen!

I went for the 2nd interview at cash converters today and got the job. It may not sound attractive to most people but I'm looking forward to it. It'll do until I can decide what path I want to take.

I'm in Stoke at the moment and they went to put me in another store for 2 weeks of training, but they might not be able to fit me into the other local store which might be a bit of a pain. I don't fancy traveling to Manchester and back everyday considering I can't drive.

Well job hunting again... Only just started my masters but it's mental that we are all already applying for jobs and sorting out companies to apply to nearer the time.

Hopefully I'll be able to "walk into" a job when I graduate rather than spend a year doing **** like with my undergrad... I'd better, the amount I'm paying for this!

I did a separate thread but...

I got a job last week after 9 months of searching. Good money and local, only 18 months but beggars can't be choosers.

I'm happy for now at least.

Good luck. Keep at it all.

I was lucky and got a job pretty quickly after moving back to the States. After tomorrow (Friday), I will have finished my first week at Sun Microsystems (now owned by Oracle) :) I've been having a lot of fun building and wiring up these huge ginormous racks with 32 or 64 cpus :D

I take it you got a job in the end :p

I should have an interview lined up for next week, the recruiter said she'd ring back once it had been arranged. So I'm hopeful it goes well it's for a trainee position too!

I'm excited to get one because it will be my first proper full time job, here's hoping!

lol....Which time? I've had like 3 since I created the thread :p Stuff keeps going wrong....

Left one due to tinnitus, another due to stress, then worked at wickes delivering...now i'm just ina job that pays me hardly anything so i'm literally down to less than £40 each months end :p

Ah brilliant, always exciting getting your first full time job :) Just show loads of interest, and be willing to learn whatever, it will help in the long run, especially if you intend on staying for a while

Well, the my contract runs till the end of this month. I know that they want to keep me on till dec but, as always, there's a struggle with the signoff.. only I have a firm feeling this time it will get refused.

So it's CV pushing time! However it seems telco (fixed and Mobile) is a bloodbath atm. Least I'm over the summer holiday period.

I'm in the Bracknell/Reading area here too.

So far - approximately 70 applications made, only 1 interview (unsuccessful).

Only 1 company got back to me and they said they had 300 applicants for the position.

Starting to get quite demoralised now.

Keep at it.

It sounds like you need to revise your CV in it's approach. The best way todo this is from scratch by relearning the basics that you'd normally think you know. Patronising? Maybe but face the fact that there may be 500 CVs and yours is one that has to shine out.

I went back and read up about english and it's use (I'm 38 in 11 days). It took me the best part of three revisions and as many months before I had a CV that I was happy about. Pick up Collins "Improve your writings skills". Also "Elements of Style" by Strunk & White (of Charlotte's Web fame) is a concise book and has a reputation worldwide.

Next up - what are you doing in your spare time? You may be out of work however that does not stop you from improving yourself. That can be used as part of your application. After the 4 applications per day you can realistically apply to without sounding like it's a template application then you will have time to put into improving yourself.

Well the interview was kind of a success, acquired a month's temporary work for December. The sheer volume of people applying might have had something to do with it.

Still, disappointing given the results in this thread, but I guess it's better than nothing...volunteering hasn't made much difference.
