Excellant :)

I'm yet to find a fully permanent job since late 2008 when all this carp started.

Hopefully this one will pay off

Hi all,

For thoes that have managed to get a new job with their current CV.
What do you do!?

I've had my C.V on various websites (Monster,Job Site, Reed , etc.)
& had 0 responce :(

I know that i'm not quallified as most here but my highest qullification i hold is:
Level III Advanced Diploma for I.T. Practitioners (ICT Systems Support) (Oct 2004)

Since 2004 as i regret to say. Went full time with Sainsburys and caught in a rutt. Dec 24th 09 - dislocated my knee, had to have surgery. And returning to work 20th Oct 2010. But i really need something new 13yrs service for Sainsburys and not much to show for it really.

At college at the moment doing a beginner course for Digital DSLR's.

I do have a C.V but i think its that bad its not getting noticed!

Bung your CV up without personal details if you want some feedback :)

Also check this resource (unlike most GRB stuff it's really good): http://www.grb.uk.com/fileadmin/uploads/cv_template.pdf

What kind of thing are you lookign for, IT work?

If so then sadly there's probably not many key phrases/words in your CV for it to get picked up by recruiters on the job sites.

I've found even though my CV is up on the sites I still need to find and apply for most positions, it's pretty rare I get a call or email saying "I saw your CV on XYZ...".

And when I do it's usually always in one specific area that they say they have trouble finding people in.

So I guess for most positions they just get enough people applying without the need to go and find people themselves.

On the other end of the spectrum, my partner is still surviving her IT recruitment job. Sounds quite dull but really eye opening to hear how it all works.

Just had an email from the job I really wanted (had a really good telephone interview a few weeks ago) saying that he's had the position taken away and is not allowed to recruit at the moment so that's a bit gutting.

He said he'd keep me details an let me know when he does have a role again, and also asked if he could pass my details on to a subsidiary company that actually specialises in that area.

Got me a bit down as it was an awesome job for a huge company (tbh was surprised I got that far as it seemed a bit 'above' me).

The 2nd interview I have outstanding somewhere wouldn't be a bad place to work, just that it's more a sideways step rather than up.

Going on that CV I'd be pretty confident in saying it wouldn't be picked up by recruiters on the job sites for that kind of role, you'll need to keep your eyes peeled and apply yourself for anything that comes up.

Looks ok for getting a trainee/starter role though.

- I don't know what professional profile is but I would replace it with something like 'career objective'. Then replace it with something punchy such as "I am a driven and enthusiastic individual looking for valuable experience in the IT industry, whilst I work towards several professional qualifications".

- The order. I would order it as: Career objective > Work > Education > Professional training > Key skills (e.g. teamworking at supermarket, good self-starter/initiative etc.) > Technical skills > Other details

- You're probably not an F1 driver or space explorer! Get rid.

- State at end that references available on request.

- Consider making hobbies and interests its own section. An employer wants to see that you have a life outside of work.

Thanks guys ill make changed and repost!

I do have - State at end that references available on request.
it's in a footer which copy/paste didnt pick up

I'm currently searching but getting nowhere. However, my situation is what you may call "odd". I'm currently in a fairly well paying (for what it is), permanent job, but want out to do some temp work. Now bear with me on this one, because the job is frankly, killing me with stress. I've been offered a Merchant Navy Engineering Cadetship starting in the New Year, and just need to hold on until Christmas (I've actually made a calendar counting down until I can hand my notice in; 27 days......not that I'm counting), but I'm starting to find increasingly that I just can't do it anymore. I was nearly in tears this morning at the thought of having to go and spend another day in that place, and I'm dreading tomorrow.

I'd be happy, blissful infact if I could just whittle down the time until I go to college working in a shop or in a warehouse or somewhere. Anything has to be better than this. NMW would be fine, I don't have any debts to service and I don't need much at all to get by.

I was at an interview yesterday for a Business Analyst role at Kwik-Fit, the interview seemed to go really well. I had a good rapour with the guy though he did most of the talking and he didn't ask me the sort of questions I would expect. I gave plenty examples of my experience and the interview ended with him saying I would be back for a second interview with his boss so I felt good.

Woke up to a call this morning from the recruitment consultant and was told I apparently said I wanted to go down the development route rather than the BA route which I seriously don't remember saying. Even the recruitment consultant cant understand whats going on.

Not a good candidate experience :(

What a nightmare. I was forwarded for a job from the job centre which was a computer technician position at a computer recycling plant.

I was told the interview was at 4.30, arrived at about 4.15 to be told the interviewer wouldn't be there till 5. Had to wait around as it wouldn't make sense to go all the way back home.

The guy arrived along with 4-5 other people who were staff there (most volunteers) and he photocopied my CV and passed it around the table which I thought was a bit rude as I was told it'd be an interview and not a meeting.

All in all, not a very professional company to work for at all, seems very unorganised and all over the place and it seems most of the people there don't even know what there own job role is.

I was asked about 3 questions throughout an hour and a half whilst all the rest were just chatting about random things, I felt very out of place. Was told in the end that they wanted me to do 2 weeks volunteer work to see if I 'fitted in'. No thanks!

Another shambolic job pushed through by the jobcentre.

All I can say to everyone having trouble finding work is to keep at it.

I was unemployed from my graduation in July 2009. I looked for over a year, I sent out countless applications. I applied for a science technician role in a school. One of the 3 people in the interview (the deputy headteacher) took an instant dislike to me, and due to the school I attended for my A-Levels had the cheek cite "my arrogance" as the main reason why he didn't want to hire me. I was gutted, this guy screwed me out of a job, I know his colleagues liked me for the job but he had final say.

Then, 3 months and 40 applications later, I managed to get another interview, at one of the most prestigious schools in the country.

The interview was 2 days ago, I was grilled by a panel of 5 teachers, it went fantastic, they offered me the job. I'm still in shock tbh, I spent the day there today fooling around with my new workmates (blowing stuff up on the rugby field!), its like a dream job for me. After over a year of misery and getting screwed over, I finally caught a break. It will happen for you guys too, just keep your chin up and don't let the b******s get you down.

Very wise words

Just thought I'd post in this thread as my wife has just finished a four year course with a BSC in Adult Nursing from Stirling University. Her graduation is at the end of November, she's already applied for countless nursing jobs in various different departments and ranging in distance from Hastings to Inverness.

Today she had her first interview at in Glasgow and by 1700 she'd been offered the job which is brilliant considering it specialises in the field she was after (theatre) and she'll be starting in around 6 weeks. We were prepared for the long haul and were expecting a good few months with lots of knock backs and no replies from application forms. To say we're both over the moon is an understatement :D

I've quoted icedbullet at the start of my post as he's quite right - you do need to keep at it, don't get too disheartened if the whole process takes ages, have faith in yourself and your achievements/qualifications so far and eventually you'll be rewarded for your endeavour's :)

Afternoon all, I too am now on the job hunt. I'm currently finishing off my third year of a mathematics degree in Plymouth. However i'm trying to apply early to numerous grad schemes but fitting in applying around my huge workload is proving difficult. However I got an email today saying i need to do an online psychometric test for financial reasoning for a post at the FSA. However I have only ever tried one and was horrified by that as i didn't know what to expect. Anybody know of anywhere i can practice these as i really want this job and don't want to go into the test unprepared.

It's terrible that so many of you have been struggling to find a job for so long, however keep going, Had a similar experience when looking for placements. I applied here there and everywhere and got rejected every time until I got an interview. Result! I thought and it went really well. However 2 months later i had not heard from them and was having no luck elsewhere and pretty much gave up as it was now getting too late and approaching exam time. Then one day i got a phone call saying i got the job and it really was a good one. So basically keep trying, don't let it get you down.

Being experienced isn't always an advantage, there are a fair few opportunities for people fresh out of college\uni...with the obvious caveat that you did a useful course and have a few extracurricular items to talk about.

Ahhh cheers buddy that's great, I'll need to practice these. However it's a financial awareness test i've got to do this time does anybody know what that might entail? (other than testing your financial awareness)
