Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I did a financial test for RBS (for an operational role) and it entailed rebasing graphed data, currency conversions etc. You could always email the company and ask what it might entail.

I graduated in June with a Masters in Physics, and for the last 4 months have been applying for IT jobs. I barely heard back from anyone (probably due to only having 3 months experience in an IT role) but last week had an interview at an architecture firm, had a 2nd interview on Monday and a job offer on Tuesday! I'm really chuffed with myself as it was my first "real" job interview. It's only a basic support role, but at the moment that's all I'm realistically going to get, and any experience I can get will greatly benefit me in the future. It also gives me the opportunity to work on my MS qualifications in my spare time, and they've mentioned maybe giving me time off to sit the exams.

all I can say is, keep at it and something will eventually turn up, my job came from a chance decision to browse through jobs on Gumtree.

Wish i had checked this thread before doing my test, could have used them practice tests in Sukh's post. 35 mins to do 22 questions, hmmmm i thought that should be ok, then BAM! wall of text then 3 questions then BAM have another wall of text :( Admittedly I have only ever done one of these tests before and that was for BP and that was insane. Hardest bit is pulling out what i need from said walls of text quickly, the maths is basic. Didn't even get to the end of the test, just a bit shameful.

Also had a rejection email the other day :( not enjoying this applying for grad schemes malarky as it's giving me less time to do work too.

Anyways i shall persist.

Good work HaMMuS.

The trick with some of these online tests is not feeling the pressure to finish them. Some I only get half way through, but out of that half I know I have them all right. I've passed numerous tests doing this.

At the end of the day it's all about practice. It will be the same with first interviews. Soon you'll get used to the tests because all firms use the same few testing companies, and you'll be rocking.

Let the rejection fuel you. I you get rejected by one, then apply for two more. It's not a sign you're rubbish, it's the company's impression you don't match their need. It's nothing personal.

I've always struggled with applying while at uni - the time it takes for some (cough BP) is ridiculous. When I left uni in July I'd applied for 50 grad schemes, done online tests, interviews etc. and had nothing. It's only since finishing uni I've had time to focus and been offered a job.

Keep at it and if you need feedback or ideas then post back here, plenty of us have been through it.

As rodo says, it's not always about finishing the tests, more about getting the answers right.

I tend two sets of numerical tests during KPMG's assessment process and only got about halfway through each (some others didn't even get that far) and I passed both.

Got a phone call from jessops and I have an interview on Monday :D
Slightly nervous, being my first interview and all. Hopefully I wont screw it up

Got a telephone interview for HSBC, whenever the hangover shifts enough for me to complete it. Anyone had one before? It's just a call centre role so shouldn't be too hard to pass I hope!

Cheers Rodo and sh4rk, that's reassuring to know, don't feel too bad about it now as I answered about 15 of the 22 questions and I'm pretty sure I got most of them right. They had a thing where if you get it wrong you lose a mark but if you selected "don't know" you would neither gain or lose a mark. I assume this is pretty standard on these tests. Hope I get somewhere with this grad scheme as it looks really good. Just finished an application for Qinetiq too, got so many applications on the go at the moment it's unreal. Takes forever putting together decent application forms, I'll keep going though, continually fire them out through the year, hopefully I'll get lucky at some point.

Good luck Rizzee and Ahleckz,

Excellant :)

I was like that...id have so many applications on the go it'd take my 5 miunutes on the phone with them to figure who was who :p

I'm at this stage at the moment too, the bad thing is BP isn nowhere near the worst supermajor in the application sense. There's one or two that have an hour assessment when you send in your CV. Not looking forward to that!

Luckily smaller consultancies and oil companies aren't quite the same and are more standard.

Anyone else find that the SHL site sucks really bad or am I just being dim? I can't seem to find a way to log into my account without googling SHL log in, and then it complains that I can't use firefox to take a practice test, and then when I use IE, tells me that I don't have flash for IE installed so I need to go back once I'm on a suitable computer... meh.

You missed off GCSE grades :)

Yeah ive noticed but atm cant find the papers for the grades :/ & i cant remember ... was too long ago

Still have no clue what job to aim for struggling in my current job with my (knee disability) so god knows

I too was starting to get this way but then I got my geek on and made a spreadsheet to keep track with who's said what and so on.

I was always told to just put "x GCSEs at grade A*-C" Unless i am asked for specific grades (these are normally maths and english) I don't feature them

Seems you're quite an IT oriented person, you looking to stay in this sector or are there other areas you are particularly interested in?

well the job interview was pretty quick  5-10 minutes
Said he'd definitely be in contact so i'm taking that it went all good

Has anyone got any tips for writing a covering letter?

I just feel mines not up to scratch not getting notice or do employers go straight to the CV?

So far I have got where and who I have been working for and what kind of role I am looking for.

Any help is much appreciated. :)
