Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I too was starting to get this way but then I got my geek on and made a spreadsheet to keep track with who's said what and so on.

I was always told to just put "x GCSEs at grade A*-C" Unless i am asked for specific grades (these are normally maths and english) I don't feature them

Seems you're quite an IT oriented person, you looking to stay in this sector or are there other areas you are particularly interested in?

As i said in prev post ill have to find the papers i cant remember what i got now

Yeah i enjoy working with computers and solving issues etc. Just have never found anyone to work for.

As i've been with Sainsburys for the last 12 odd years i have no idea what sector to work in apart from IT. But it seems these days too many people with higher quallifications and experance so i've lost out imo.

been looking at CW jobs / monster / jobsite this morning and cant find anything

Has anyone got any tips for writing a covering letter?

I just feel mines not up to scratch not getting notice or do employers go straight to the CV?

So far I have got where and who I have been working for and what kind of role I am looking for.

Any help is much appreciated. :)

Depends on the job buddy

'ideally' the covering letter should be slightely different for each job

However if its the same type of job you are going for then naturally the covering letter will just be tailored for that sector :)

I quite like writing covering letters. Normally I'll be sitting down to write down the covering letter after researching the company for a couple of hours. I always want the person reading it to feel that I've got a good grasp of what they do and am a good match for them. If I can link in some current news to do with the company I try to (such as new innovations or a change in strategy).

http://www.grb.uk.com/covering_letters.0.html might help

Some things I always include (in a rough order):
- State the role or scheme I am applying to and where I saw it advertised
- Why I am interested in taking up this position (linked to my past experience/learning to show relevance to the advertised position's needs)
- Quick blurb on my degree
- Highlight most relevant experience/successes which make me a suitable candidate (normally current employer for me)
- Make reference to CV being attached
- I always use cambria font because I think it looks professional and fancy

A personal example (far from perfect I'm sure but it got me an interview):

Dear Sir/Madam,

Re: Application for [JOB TITLE]

I am writing with regards to the above position in your [LOCATION] office. After researching opportunities at the firm I found this position extremely interesting, due to my passion for business, and more specifically, within the technology market.

I graduate from my [DEGREE] at the University of X in July 2010 and am keen to pursue a career in business operations. A professional training year within marketing at [OLD COMPANY] as part of my degree, strengthened my desire to work in this business function.

I found this placement year to be invaluable in my education and allowed me to build a range of professional and personal skills. The experience gained has already had a significant impact on my final year studies in both my organisation and critical thinking.

I am fascinated by the rate of change within the computing and technology industry and believe this constant development would mean no two days are the same. As a dominant technology firm, a graduate position at [NEW COMPANY] would allow me to take advantage of the business' innovative and dynamic environment to maximise my potential and contribute, adding value to the work which I complete.

To satisfy my interest in marketing and technology at university I have selected discretionary modules such as Management Information Systems, E-Business and Marketing Strategy to aid my understanding yet further. Many of my university modules and my year in industry at [OLD FIRM] involved presenting to student and customer audiences and working in teams, both of which will be fantastic experience for a graduate role.

I hope that you feel I am suitable for the role and I am available for interview at any point. Thank you for considering my application and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

(signature)

Hey...it's two days more than you had (Presumably?) :)...Are you on JSA? As you may be able to still receive it if its only 2 days a week

thanks, something will show up soon enough hopefully

Had a quick flick through the last few pages but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I'm after a 2nd part-time job or possibly even a full-time post, but apart from the job centre plus website, most other ones I've been trying are a waste of time. I search by location as I'm very open to different types of work, but the first page of results are from 40 miles away :(. Anyone decent ones out there?

Got past the telephone interview stage, and now got to go to an 'experience day' (Extended interview, roleplay, stuff like that) later this month. First date they had was 9am on the 29th of Nov, a day after my birthday where a 3 day booze up has already been planned. Luckily they have one on the 30th as well. All my ties are minging, so I'll spend a day man shopping tomorrow.
Haven't been paid my JSA in 3 weeks, so that'll be nice when it comes in one bulk but hopefully won't be on that for too much longer.

only ~10k IT jobs showing on cwjobs yesterday. that is terrible :(

Welcome to my world...And i'm in one of them!!! Went from 18 to this

Currently debating whether to terminate our house contract soon as we can't afford to keep it up now

Been temping at a bank in Reading for the last six weeks. My boss told me on Monday that I would be finishing this Friday as our project is complete. I was a little worried as jobs seems scarce now we are on the run up to Christmas. By some bizarre coincidence, my boss from my last contracting position texted me about an hour later on Monday morning and offered me my old job back, albeit for two months over Christmas as they have another project they want me in on. I left there in August so must have done something right to be the first one on their list when they need someone back.

I am so happy I am going to be working till the end of January as the market should have picked up by then. Plus, triple the salary compared to my temp job. :)

Excellant dude :)

Always nice when people remember you

Haven't found a job yet either. I've applied for a few things but not had call backs. Not much to go for either. :(

Same for me. I live in quite a rural place and don't have use of a car so the number of jobs I'm able to apply for are quite slim because most of the local jobs available seem to be care-work sorts of jobs or need a very specific qualifcation.

I've been keeping a hawks-eye on the local job websites and in the newspapers and applied for quite a few jobs but I've heard back from none of them. It's putting quite a downer on me really, I never would have thought being at home this much could've become dull and depressing.

I left college in June and went straight into a temporary office job for a few months and got a bit of money but I'd really rather save that for when it's really needed.
