Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Been thinking today and the job 250 miles away I don't think I'm realistically going to want so will possibly tell them thanks but no thanks (there was a chance the job would have been considerably nearer, hence my original application).

Had a call this afternoon from a large global IT firm with a perfect role, just hoping that it's not something where I'll never hear from them again. Least it was direct from the company and not through an agency.

Well had an interview this morning for something, went alright I think, not great but not terrible.

Will see if anything happens but not expecting anything.

Pretty much sums up my past few weeks.

My notice period of anywhere between 8 - 12 weeks really isn't helping :( Conversation with agencies and companies directly goes wrong when they ask about notice period.

I have a job but found out about a SharePoint Consultant role which was really nice looking, so took a punt and they asked me for a telephone interview, which I found out yesterday that they want to see me tmro! Going to have to be ill but the job is about £15k more than I'm on now and with some really nice clients! I'd be crazy not to want to explore this further.

1.5hr interview tmro and they're probably going to grill me like mad on the tech stuff as well. Hopefully I can prep enough today!

Slightly frustrating, the company knew how much I would have wanted (due to travel no way I could have gone lower, and even then it would be a pay cut) but still got me the 100 miles up here for the interview.

Had a call saying sorry the job is fixed at a lower salary and they couldn't go any higher, now they didn't say if I would get the job anyway if I'd go lower but as I wouldn't there's not much point knowing that anyway :p

So back on the hunt, got a few things still in the pipeline so fingers crossed.

Maybe they think I'll just go 'oh go on then give me less money', which if it was more local or a amazing job I probably would. But it's not :)

I've got an interview for a trainee chartered accountant position tomorrow, firm is extremely reputable. ACA contract.

I'm actually bricking it.

I foresee a lost generation, the only advice I could offer anyone in that age range is, if you can afford it, and personal life allows - travel to areas of the world that need people. West Australia is still suffering a labor shortage and the strong Aussie dollar means you can (as I do) send money back to the UK. You'll have to be quick though, 1/2 of Ireland is on its way!

Older Sister moved out there a few years ago (Vet), Aunt and Uncle (He's an Engineer) are going out to Perth in a couple of months. Parents are pretty likely to retire there too.
My younger sister and I have started looking. I've pretty much given up on finding a job (Computer Networking graduate) and am in the process of setting up my own business rather than scraping by on the dole any longer. If it doesn't work out I'm off.

Emailed my CV to a company who had advertised a vacancy in the local newspaper today, I got a reply within an hour, not saying I'd got an interview but they sent me a questionaire to fill in and send to them so I might still be in luck yet. It's only a Customer Service Advisor role but it's better than being without a job any longer. Apparently to start with it'll be part time and home-based while they set up an office in the town I live in and then it'll be working from the new office full time.

I've never been confident on a phone talking to people I've never met but I'm so fed up of being without a job now I'll give almost anything a try. I covered for the administrator in my last, and first job. I was on the phone constantly not knowing what I was meant to say to any of the people who called, one of the worst weeks of my life. Then I was fortunate to already have a holiday to Tenerife booked so I missed the last two weeks of cover work I would've had to do and by the time I got back the proper administrator was back. Don't think I should've been put in that situation without any training really but that's how crap is.

Having a bit of a nightmare day today, I'm still sitting in the excuse of a data centre at one of our remote offices sorting out a problem and will be here for at least another 3 hours, joy :p

But I did get a refreshing call from an old colleague who had hinted that there might be some contract work with him available. Well he called to say it's looking more likely they'll want me and am I intersted.

Day rate is good, (talking almost 100% take home increase over what I get now) and knowing the company well contractors tend to hang around a long time.

Plus the other half still works there so travel is brilliant as we just share lifts like we do now (but now she drops me off at a park and ride).

Got everything crossed as this was my ideal scenario. Only downside is I miss out on my 5 figure redundancy payout if I just quit, but it's worth it :)

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd put this in here.

Recently I went for 2 interviews within a few days of each other. I was offered job number 2, accepted, signed the contract and start on the 14th March.

I received a call from job number 1 today, basically saying that the guy they employed wasn't working out (discrepancies with his CV) and they'd like to offer me the job.

After hearing this news, I'm in a right pickle as this job is right up my street and exactly what I'm looking for. I've spoken to them in quite a bit of detail and I'm 99.9% sure it's the route I want to take... not to mention I've just signed up to a new tenancy which is 6 miles from job number 1 compared to the 20 miles from job number 2.

The thing is, I've already signed the contract for job number 2 and will feel absolutely rotten about letting them down with 2 weeks until my start date.

Will there be any repercussions from doing this?

I think I've finally got an interview. I've got to travel further than I wanted if I do get the job and it's only part time but it'll be fine for now. Better than me being sat at home and going even more insane!

Knowing people who know about jobs where they work and them putting in the good word is the only thing that's worked for me so far. I've only had two jobs, the first was working where my dad works although not with him. This job was highlighted by another relative of mine who said a university student had just left the job and that it was available and I'd have a good chance if I phoned in today which I did and they offered me an interview.

The weird thing is I can't find this job advertised anywhere which is a bit odd and the woman I spoke to said she had other applications.

If you haven't actually started working for them yet then I personally can't see what repercussions there will be. I would just explain the situation to them and go from there?

I just hate the thought of letting people down.

Either way, it's done and dusted now. Called them at the tail end of last week after signing the contract at the other company.

Start on Monday :)
