Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I'm yet to experience the Job Centre, have just started on my search for desktop/server support in Edinburgh.

Whilst you get plenty of people saying "I wouldn't touch desktop support with a 10ft pole", I'm not overly bothered. It's all experience at the end of the day, always opportunities to use different software or see different/unusual problems.
I'm not looking to stay in support forever but am happy to do it. :)

Hell, at the moment I'd even take data entry roles. Any job will do for me, as long as the rent/bills are covered, then there is plenty freedom to look at retraining. :D

It is pretty flawed...You end up spending money on petrol or bus fares...When you need the money!!! Its daft

Aye... They have to make the system robust so the lowest common denominator can't abuse it, though they still try obviously... couple of weeks ago I was in and the advisor at the next desk was basically grilling some girl because he thought she was lying about her applications, the gf was listening to it and apparently she wasn't very convincing :p

It just means for the rest of us the system is a complete joke and doesn't help anyone.

It's not been helpful for me, I just go in for the NI stamps. Managed to get on the early cycle so pop in for my 5 minutes at 9am and done for the fortnight. Don't really need the money from them but I guess it's £3-4 a trip.

On a positive note, got a second interview tomorrow for what sounds like a great job and a massive step up in my career.

The jobcentre is an utter waste of time and money.

The woman I often get is the spitting image of this:

And is equally useless!

Oh well, I can ring them tomorrow and say I have a job :)

On that note, spent 3 hours on the checkouts this afternoon, that was soul destroying. Glad I'll be working in home delivery!!

It does warm your heart though when you consider the person you were talking to a few months ago might've been let go and is now queueing up in the job centre to go through the exact same pointless experience you have been.

They all seem to go on maternity leave or retire on some massive pension.

This is just a joke it really is. Don't know how long ago it happened but apparently the job centre has gone up a level from 'no reimbursement for travel if the interview is in your local region' to a nice and useful 'no reimbursement at all'. They have access to 'a limited fund' only.

It really is a farce. Gf just got a job interview down in Southend and the train would cost around £100 return, 2 full weeks of JSA right there. She's ringing up to see if she can still get the money but clearly the job centre has no interest what so ever in helping people find jobs anymore...

I'm currently looking for a job as I've just finished uni - I had some casual work doing videography for a company but they have no permanent/full time positions at the moment and I really need those sort of hours (I can't move back with my parents for long - 2 months at a stretch). I had an interview last week which went well (sales assist.) and was told I'd hear something this week - really hope I get this as I don't want to live back home for long and the job centres aren't getting a helpful image from what you guys are saying?

We've got a couple of support roles going just outside Edinburgh actually, email in trust if you're interested/want more details :).

The extent of assistance the job centre provides is basically what you can get at home by surfing job sites. They seem to blissfully ignore all requests for assistance of any kind be it help with covering letters, interview techniques or simply help finding work in a particular area and they have absolutely no knowledge of anything.

Realistically when we went there to sign on in January, they should've informed my gf about certain job opportunities in her field. But they didn't and she only found out about it about a month ago but the deadline was the end of March so she has to wait until next year.

Essentially all they do is oversee your collection of JSA and make sure you are still applying for jobs. Beyond that they may as well not exist.

they don't even ask for a CV, they ask for a 'field' and thats it, its just a stupid flawed system for people who don't really want to be looking for work

I've just joined the market from a contracted software developer. Hopefully it shouldn't be too bad.

A recent graduate - Spent a year developing software for BMW. Then straight when I finished Uni, the University employed me and I picked up 3 contracts for the past year. Their funding has dried, so I've had past few weeks off.

Had a little break and I've been applying 2-6 jobs every day as of the past week. I picked up a phone interview with Capita but I didn't have enough experience compared to some candidates.

Just had a call from a recruiter who will be sending forward my CV and a friend sending my CV forward to his employers.

I hope things look up because I feel soulless at the moment! I've always been working part time since I was 12 :(

I know the feeling mate, I am sitting here on a nice summers day writing cover letters and have been since I finished my exams almost 2 months ago! I am glad I have hobbies that get me out the house or I may go mad.

At first I loved it but now it's quite depressing. I feel like I should have undersold myself and gone for a junior position. Granted I had to commute 60 miles in total and it paid 5k less but the dreaded doubts are hovering :(

I've officially signed off from the job centre :D I schredded all that nasty paperwork.

Bloody Kwik-Fit rang me today, I was working so didn't answer, they left me a message to call them back. It's probably 3 to 4 weeks since I heard from them, so unless they can offer me decent money I'll be staying put.

Good news (ish) I've secured 2 interviews in the past couple of hours. One is tomorrow which is a technical test over the phone. And another one on the 8th of July for a web development position. For that I have to create a web site that sorts a large sets of data and allows users to organise that data. I have to then present it at the interview. Haven't decided what route to take yet.
