Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Grudas, what sites are you using? Check the OP for some sites you might not have thought of, update the CV on the website every week so it refreshes on to the top of the search list as well.

Try also looking for some rollout / installation jobs as well, I swear I saw a couple in the london area the other day.

thanks, ill look at the websites and most installation/rollout jobs require driving license which i don't have

@grudas - the first proper job I had was at Burger King, after that I worked at a call centre. They might not be ideal career material but they demonstrate you can hold down a job and want to work. Almost everyone I know of my generation or before did this stuff when they started.

He'll I worked as a Binman, Kitchen Porter and table cleaner starting at 4am.

Just to add, if I was recruiting someone I'd pick a Junior that had roughed it out over some low end jobs, shOws attitude and commitment

Well I just graduated (again) and am in the jobs market (again). At the moment it's looking pretty rosey but It's leaving me with a couple of thoughts on my mind.

First off I have a 3 week assesment coming up with a company I worked with during my degree. The guy I worked with also asked me what I'm doing shortly as they have some places they want to fill (not quite sure how it relates to the "assessment"). The only thing is although I quite like the work the location is quite poor for me and I'm not sure how it will work out in the future for my wants.

I also have a second interview next week with a small new startup company. Now this is with an operating company not a consultancy (like the previous job) which is where I would rather be (for its quite hard to move from consultancy to operator later on in life) however job security wise this would be a bigger risk (although they got a £100m investment recently so should be ok) due to them being a small startup.

Now depending on whether I was offered either or both jobs I'm not sure whether to make good overtures to either because I would then feel quiet guilty about "leading them on", specifically with the company I have spent several months working with.

I'm guessing the answers will be make the overtures to both and forget any "loyalty" you may have?

It's been a long time for me, but when I was starting I literally got some CV's printed up, dressed up smartly and went from shop to shop asking if the Manager was available. Also check the temp agencies, I got lots of catering/cleaning/factory type work through them. It ought to be relatively easy to get a job (any job) through this approach - and then you can use that as a platform to aim for your IT work.

If you can type a bit, look at call centre / office assistant type work as a priority as it gets you used to the office environment.

Like I said before, if I was hiring a junior IT guy - i'd pick the one that was doing entry level work over one that had been unemployed for ages doing nothing. If you really can't find anything, stay on the Dole and go volunteer - there's always a need for people to help out at old peoples homes, youth centres - whatever, and again it demonstrates you aren't idle.

Edit: And the other thing i'd suggest is going to your local Business Link / Chamber of Commerce whatever they call them these days - and see if you can blag some work helping small companies with their computers.

thank you for advice :) ill take a note of this and will look for temporary agencies!

Been looking for work advice and stumbled upon this thread.

I too have found job hunting frustrating, been out of work for 14 weeks after quitting my job at a call centre for IT support (hated it). Sadly it seems that's the only thing I might be qualified to get :( IT support jobs have appeared regularly in my searches, maybe because they have such high staff turnover I'm guessing.

Might just have to take anything now.. Was contemplating looking for jobs outside the UK aswell. Anyone successfully managed that?

I had an Interview with IBM. It was a 10 hour assessment with a presentation, 3 groups tasks, 3 individuals tasks, a negotiation exercise and a test.

I did extremely well on all of them. I failed on the easiest and simplest task of them all, the negotiation task. It was 10 minutes d'oh :( I did drive stupid # of miles and I didn't sleep. Oh well it happens. After that I felt quite disheartened. What could possibly top what IBM had an offer?

Earlier today I was made a job offer for an exciting and growing software development firm. The best part? IBM would have been a 50 miles commute each way, totalling up to 1.5-2hrs journey each way.

This job? It took me 3 minutes from to door for the interview and approx 10-15 minutes by foot. Taking travelling costs into consideration. The pay package works out so much better!

So excited :D Been on the hunt since May. It's a difficult market to get into. A huge sigh of relief.

Note to those working. Always save well. I've been living on my savings and I've had a very comfortable ride. I hate to dread what it could have been like without that money.

I wouldn't take it personally anyway. These things are so competitive at the moment, they can discard you for having ever so slightly funny walk.

Is it possible to advertise for jobs on here? I can't see why not, it doesn't hurt OcUK and greatly helps its members.
I am looking for some IT consultants for my team in Dubai/Singapore, someone from the UK with an IT related degree straight from uni or with a bit of experience.

If anyone is interested or knows anyone who's interested they could get in touch with me for a job spec via trust.
How's that for helping the community!

sorry bit of along rant.

Since finishing Uni (in june) I have been applying like crazy to all the jobs that relate to my degree, through online job sites Ive roughly sent out 40 to 50 applications so far. Recently (early August more like) I was invited to an interview for a new role in a very small company that does B2B (im not going into much detail on the position soz). Anyway the first interview went well I was asked to complete some tasks after the interview (graphical design type stuff) I did them and was invited to a second interview at the end of Aug, sweet.

Well due to a on site customer visit they had to cancel and re-schedule my interview which is no big deal, it was set for a day earlier this week.

Interview day: I get to the place where their office is 10mins early (takes me 40ish mins to drive there which is fine) I get in shake hands with my interviewer and we are about to get to business, i.e. him getting half way through a question and then a scheduled onsite customer visit that was due later in the day turns up early, my interview turns to me says "oh dear they are very early, please excuse me for a minute." A minute goes by other members of staff come in and apologise, offer me coffee which is nice, im not too fussed, the company is extremely small but deal with a large-ish market, also they have been on semi-shut down (what i could gather) for the past two weeks due to my interviewer (ceo of company) going on holiday plus another member on holiday so they are all chasing their tails.

Anyway im sat in the office / conference room waiting for my interview to restart the person incharge of admin invites me into their office while the rest of the staff talk business in the conference room.... fast forward an hour im still waiting around and ive not spoken with my interviewer since, the person incharge of admin goes and asks him what shall I do because my interview has another customer visite in the hour. Im then asked to leave my details again so i leave mob number, land line and email, im told i will be phoned during the afternoon, I leave.

Ive heard nothing since. Ive emailed them asking if we could re-re-schedule another second interview for another date.

im starting to get ****** off.
