Former Russian double agent seriously ill in Salisbury.

There is no successor lined up, and We'll probably find the person succeeding him will be worse...

Edit: Medvedev was the closest - he portrayed himself when he was president as more libreral and reformist especially against corruption, but nothing changed, Putin was still in control in reality.

Would they be though? Or would it be like when Stalin went we end up with more moderate types.

After all there shouldn' be any hard core cold war era types even around by then.

Yeah, we'll get out gas from solar panels and wind turbines! >.> :p

Well there is a big push towards more efficient sabetier process gas generators for space travel .

But I think his point is if we reduce our need for gas for electricity generation then we will have excess for heating/cooking. Or that we start moving more towards electrical for both

Can't be sure but Putin seems to keep tight control on things for better or worse, if there was a power vacuum post Putin there isn't as much to enable the more moderate types and counter those with less scruples who might reach for power compared to typical in the Western world.

I suppose it might depend how he goes.

Slow decline into dementia would provide quite a long stage for others to tske power.

Or some kind of youth movement style candidate but i have no idea what Russian youth consider acceptable these days are they hardliner or more liberal

One thing that might have implications - there is a massive push within Russia at the moment to drive internet connectivity - though in places like Turkey and Iran, etc. that has only gone so far in countering the concentration and abuse of power.

Unfortunately most of my knowledge of Russia begins and ends at their military capabilities and current regime (and a side interest in Trance which is fairly big in Russia).

There's a huge white nationalism movement in Russia which has various allegations of state support. Liberal they are not.

No, extremely all alpha males which is why they all Drink vodka (known girly drink) so significant complex issues.

Russia is a failed state with a little bit power left in the Middle. The road to MOSCOW is wide open. Which is why they are running scared of the new Northern Europe, People can see the benefit of economics in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia etc. Every year these guys are catching up with the rest of western Europe so fast. The younger generation do not want the likes of the old soviet state back with them. They would sooner have 5 choices of ice cream that costs 1.5 as much instead of one flavour at half the price.

Corruption is the biggest threat which is why Russia are topping off entire familie lines to keep the people from ratting out others. In the end its doomed to fail, we just have to wait it out.

going to be interesting to see what support we get from other countries on economic and diplomatic sanctions.

We need to see that first before we start throwing our weight around too much. I dont think Russia are as weak as SPG is making them out to be. They may be a wounded animal in some respect, but they are a wounded animal with huge military and nuclear capability.

No one is talking about military action though, that would be insane
