Former Russian double agent seriously ill in Salisbury.

Police officer is communicating and alert this morning according to sky news, obviously great news.

Am I missing something here, around 500 people are being advised to wash clothes, wipe down phones etc with antiseptic wipes because of a tiny tiny chance of contamination from whatever toxic agent used. Surely this advice is both pointless and nonsensical as people would be showing signs of being poisoned by now if in particular their phones were contaminated?

I guess there is the possibility a young child (or a pet) could chew on something that had a contamination tucked into a crack somewhere or something - seems a long shot but at the same time it would be pretty awful if it happened.

Not really sure what the shelf life of these agents are in a scenario like that or what the path of infection would be either.

Russian State TV mocking those who think it was anything other than state-sponsored assassination...

That's near enough admitting it tbh. Also most of these deaths started right after Putin changed the law to make it "legal" for the KGB to kill people abroad.

Maybe the UK should start destroying the paper trail for Russians moving in, then Russia can't follow them.

If it's only a small dose it might take a while for symptoms to appear.

It'll be the `elf `n' safety lot, they are aggrieved not to be able to fanny around in bio protection suits, but are keen to show they can push a pen with real gusto.

No doubt like the anthrax scare some years back when a similar warning was issued folk went out and bought these full on face masks for little Tarquin and Lucretia and burnt all their clothes because they passed within a mile of the possibly infected area.
I love 'eln and safety.'

I've got a theory that it's people who complain about "elf n safety gone mad" that'd be the first to sue when their child comes into contact with the nerve agent that is stuck to their clothes but which hasn't made contact with skin yet.

And I am still wondering what you do and what your qualifications are for all your theories :)

Not at all.

Even if it is the Russians, what the hell can we do about it. We are toothless as a nation compared to the mighty Russia. I doubt we could do more than voice our strong disapproval and hope it doesn’t happen again.

seemed an appropriate/belated? due diligence reaction - they have not said how the policeman became contaminated, and equally , for vx
  • VX is the least volatile of the nerve agents, which means that it is the slowest to evaporate from a liquid into a vapor. Therefore, VX is persistent in the environment. Under average weather conditions, VX can last for days on objects that it has come in contact with. Under very cold conditions, VX can last for months.
  • Because it evaporates so slowly, VX can be a long-term threat as well as a short-term threat. Surfaces contaminated with VX should therefore be considered a long-term hazard.
Because VX breaks down slowly in the body, repeated exposures to VX and/or other nerve agents can build up in the body (have a cumulative effect).
Prehospital Management
Victims whose skin or clothing is contaminated with liquid nerve agent can contaminate rescuers by direct contact or through off-gassing vapor.

Russia Mighty ?

They cant afford anything, they are powerless against Northern Europe now with NATO. All they can run is disruption politics. Do you even understand why they did it ?

The country is in tatters, they are running scare tactics to repress their own people who are getting nothing from the few (AGAIN)

Give it another 10 years and we will not even need their GAS, due to renewable`s

Best thing we could is not go to the world cup, build a good couple of decent size basis in the UKRAINE and just LOL at them.

Yea Russia isn't as "mighty" as they like to make out. They are also putting vast resources in to their military at the expense of the citizens. That isn't sustainable long term.

They are going down the same path as the Stalin years and it's probably going to end the same. With them being isolated and going broke.

likely more sanctions and vesa bans on people close to the Kremlin or expelling more diplomats, I also remember reading a while ago about the possibility of banning Russian banks from the SWIFT interbank payment system. ofcourse to be effective that would need support from other countries which may be more forthcoming than in 2006. The Kremlin needs to get the message that this isn't exceptable. The west also need to wake up to the fact the policy towards russia isn't working and that they are becoming a serious threat. Strength is the only thing they respect and right now the west as a whole, rightly or wrongly is seen as weak.

Which is pretty much what every nation would do.

Even the USA couldnt do anything.

Israel for instance isnt a major power but has happily killed people all arpund the world.

There's really not much you can do unless you're willing to start a war

Acrually how old is putin?

60 something? Has he got a simmilar successor or anything or is this a case of it will be a decade 2 tops before he' gone and everything settles down?

There is no successor lined up, and We'll probably find the person succeeding him will be worse...

Edit: Medvedev was the closest - he portrayed himself when he was president as more libreral and reformist especially against corruption, but nothing changed, Putin was still in control in reality.
